Fian Ilchruinne — New Episodes

Fian Ilchruinne is a multi-viewpoint hard-science-fiction novel of the Grand Ensemble Multiverse, with one licensed deviation: a station clock forty seconds wrong, and the Star Rangers ordered to measure the drift and guard the public record. The stars call us forward with hope; to protect what is good and to see what is true. One canonical history across the Five Layers and multiple Concordants.

Chief Ranger Shepherd commands the general operations section of the Survey Corps' seventh revisit to Counterpane, the neighbouring archecluster where every instrument asked one question answers as it does at home. She signs the single-system audit, states the fold window as a band, and listens to the bench's raw stream out of a habit that has never once been wrong about whether something is there. Nothing is there. The Survey Chief braids three sources and reads what cannot be heard.

Twelve years before Threshold, the Survey Corps' first party on a newly reached membrane logs nothing wrong for ninety days, and then a routine correlation calibration returns a residual that will not close. Section Lead Syra applies every correction anyone can predict, files three words, and declines a softer one. At home, on a floor that never left, a Science Corps Principal rebuilds the bench to prove the instruments wrong, and finds instead what the record had only ever claimed for here.

The one act, from the Abbey's side. A court reciter comes up the terrace steps with a new line of the chronicle, as the court does when a line is new, so that the Accounting can be checked against it: a door was given, on Krilzat, in Pellam's time, on the right side past the ninth, and one stands in it, and no name. The Abbess sets the novice to find the room. Oriel finds it, in the hand, in the Accounting's own count of the Castle, dated by the Abbey's reckoning before she was born, and it has a name. The Abbess tells the reciter the Accounting has it, and that it was always there. At the next shelf the Ranger's reader brings in the delegation's instrument log from Krilzat, and she files what it saw at the lowest band, with three readings, and writes down both names as given and adopts neither.

The prologue to Season 5. Shepherd is promoted to Starwarden, answering for a post of her own, and above Chief there is no examination, so the Corps assigns a mentor instead, formally and as a duty. The order names Karla Wender, who was her Chief Pilot when she was a cadet, and who has been reading her silences for three years without anyone asking her to. The first meeting is short. Shepherd starts to say what she is carrying, and Wender asks whether it is in the file and whether it changes the order, and when the answer to both is no, says that it is hers. Both of Shepherd's standing relationships begin here: the one that can order her, and the one that cannot.

The one act, from the court's side. The season's first calm brings a boat, a letter from the court, and a sealed thing from the delegation that the court has let come as far as the keeper decides. Wren and Bram go down the right side of the hall, past where the lamp used to stop and past where the notches do, counting doors against the chronicle, and find one standing open where every door is shut. The chronicle has no name for it. Inside, in the lamp's light, someone is standing. Bram sets the delegation's thing down where he decides and cuts his first notch, and Wren carries back the only line the chronicle can make of it: a door was given, on Krilzat, in Pellam's time.

The thirtieth day. The Engineering Corps has left the ring, the countersign is filed, and the posting is a hatch nobody looks at again. The Corps asks for its first assessment of the Deputy, and Smith writes it. Varn comes through the hatch and stands at the desk, and the step is not where it was, and Varn had not decided that. For the first time in fifteen Deputies the officer says so out loud. Then the Deputy asks the question held since the seventh day, what the story at the well is for, and the officer who does not tell Deputies what things mean answers it with the one thing she has: she was never told either. The rule, she says, was also advice. In the corridor the plant does not need watering, and somebody has a question for the hatch.

Then the imager's playback shows a shape at the mouth of the third passage with an edge the light goes round and nothing on any other channel: no warmth, no sound, no mass. Egede files an imager fault and recalibrates, and it comes back, and the spare sees it too, and for seven weeks the log says the instrument is broken. Aravena, asked at last, says where it stands. Nakagawa strikes the word fault, writes down what the imager saw and not what it was, and asks the Corps for the one colleague whose page this is. Odile Ferrant reads boundary instruments for a living; she breaks a seal that is hers to break and reads two years of a log that said nominal every day and meant inside the band. She goes down to the junction and watches the knock, and asks for a handheld to go with the stone, and is told not today. Then she files her reading at its grade in her own file, under the name of the page she reads for a living, and writes one line in the survey's log, and will not say what the feature is. The light finds the one on the line, and beside it, an arm's length to the side, a second shape the light goes round. The handheld sees two upright shapes and one thermal return. Oriel Fenwick, sixteen, a reeve's daughter from Difenland, sits down on her first morning as a novice to learn the hand: not a hand, the hand, the one every line of the Long Accounting has been written in since a date nobody outside the order can confirm.
