Elvira, a woman in her forties in dark working clothes, crouched on a chalk-dusted stone floor holding a thread of a survey grid taut and sighting along it. Small glass and earthenware vessels stand at intervals across the floor; a folding rule and closed record books lie on a table; flat marsh daylight comes through a small window and an open door.

The thread goes down into the chalk, and the chalk goes down into the ground, and the ground is not what it looks like at the surface. Elvira works with materials that respond to Etheric gradients: chalk, thread, water held in specific vessels, and written records that go back further than her time at the outpost.

She has been here three years. Her predecessor left under circumstances she was never told and has stopped expecting to be told. The outpost is hers now, by function if not assignment.

She is not magical. The locals call her "the Enchantress," which she finds annoying in the precise way a surveyor finds it annoying when someone calls their transit-reading instrument a magic wand. The label obscures the mechanism. The mechanism matters.

What she does is craft. Etheric structures express through the physical substrate. She maps them, tests their limits, attempts to redirect them when redirection is possible. Her methods are constrained and procedural. They either produce measurable results or they don't, and she notes when they don't.

Character Notes

Elvira does not experience deep fear. This is not a trained quality — it is structural, a feature of her nature. She once considered it a flaw. She no longer does. The Marsh Causeway is Type II oscillatory, and the work requires someone who can stand in it and continue taking measurements.

She pays attention to vocabulary. When Galahad uses precise language for the boundary events — not fumbling for metaphors, not reaching for folklore — she notices immediately, and revises her model of him upward.

Her identification of a "Court thing" at the causeway is partially correct. She has identified the method accurately. She has not yet identified the nature. This gap is being exploited.

Before the Causeway

Season 1, Episode 0 covers her last months as warden-heir of Dún Rí, in the autumn of 2822 UCSD — one winter before her arrival at the outpost in the early spring of 2823 UCSD: her first uncertain attempt at a working of her own, guided by the household sage, and the night her cat chose the garden gate over the terrace and did not come back. It establishes where her self-taught vocabulary began, without resolving what she is.

Open Thread

What is Elvira? Her classification is contested within the story. She is clearly a person, clearly capable of fine-grained boundary work, and clearly not human in the standard sense. Her species and origin are live questions. They are not resolved by external insertion — only by story events.

S01E03C03 adds the first data point and resolves nothing: Galahad Thorne met her at Dún Rí in 2806 UCSD, sixteen years before any other record places her there, and says she has not changed since. His memory is the only source — no image, instrument reading, or third-party record corroborates it, and he has entered none of it in the survey file. Whether she remembers him is not established.
