Human (cyber-revenant) Colonel, Inner System Defence Fleet (Imperium); Unbroken Command holdout Contained — Survey Corps custody, jurisdiction formally disputed

Colonel Ilse Korvain

A gaunt elderly officer in an archaic dark greatcoat and garrison cap, collar sealed to the chin, a thin silver seam tracing her temple, standing at attention in a derelict depot corridor

Colonel Ilse Korvain has been dead, by any ordinary clinical standard, for longer than the Imperium she still serves was ever alive.

Survey Corps identified her in 2819 UCSD, holding the Ashfall Depot — a Belt fuel and materiel waystation the Imperium commissioned and the Military Space Command formally decommissioned in 2611 UCSD, two years after the Imperium's own end. Reconstruction of the depot's maintenance logs places Korvain's continuous, unbroken presence there back to 2631 UCSD: a hundred and eighty-eight years of self-maintenance, chassis replacement, and brain-state preservation, undertaken for the sole stated purpose of remaining able to carry out an order that has never arrived.

Known History

  • Commissioned into the Inner System Defence Fleet's officer corps prior to the Imperium's end in 2609 UCSD; original service record incomplete, recovered only in fragments from the depot's own archive.
  • Assigned to the Ashfall Depot under standing Imperium garrison orders; remained at post through the Imperium's negotiated restructuring into the Military Space Command and the depot's formal 2611 UCSD decommissioning, which she has stated, on contact, that she never received notice of through any channel she recognises as lawful.
  • Underwent progressive cybernetic preservation beginning at an undetermined point in the depot's isolation, reconstructed by Survey Corps xenomedical liaison as the origin of her current cyber-revenant status.
  • Contacted by a Survey Corps team mapping abandoned Imperium-era Belt infrastructure in 2819 UCSD; took the contact team into custody under her own standing garrison orders before the exchange was resolved without casualties.
  • Currently held under Survey Corps supervision at the Ashfall Depot itself, pending unresolved determination of jurisdiction — neither the SSDC nor the Star Rangers charter cleanly covers an officer whose oath was sworn to an institution with no living successor authorised to release her from it.

Character Notes

Korvain does not consider herself a holdout, a fanatic, or a relic, and objects — calmly, at length, and with what contact-team debriefs describe as unsettling procedural precision — to all three characterisations. Her position, stated consistently across every recorded exchange since 2819, is narrower and, within Imperium doctrine, difficult to refute on its own terms: she was posted to Ashfall Depot under a lawful order, no lawful order has relieved her of it, and two centuries of institutional succession are, to her, an argument about what replaced the Imperium, not evidence that the specific order binding her was ever rescinded.

She is not hostile by disposition. The contact team's custody was, by her own account and the surviving log, a garrison procedure applied uniformly and without malice — she has detained every arrival at Ashfall Depot the same way for two centuries, released each in turn once satisfied they posed no threat to depot materiel, and sees no reason the Survey Corps' arrival should have been handled differently. What makes her genuinely difficult is not aggression. It is that her reasoning is internally consistent, her authority to act on it was never formally withdrawn, and no institution now in existence has clean legal standing to withdraw it after the fact.

Survey Corps liaison staff who have worked the case describe the hardest part of it as neither medical nor military: it is that Korvain is, by the only standard she has ever been asked to meet, still doing her job.
