Season 3 · Episode 2
Back from the Survey track and holding Section Lead at Threshold, Shepherd is asked for a transit window through the oscillation the station has logged for thirteen years, and states the band the readings support where the room wants the point the traffic plan was built on. Chief Pilot Wender is at the end of the table, which no briefing required, and says the one sentence a Chief Pilot has unarguable standing to say. Afterwards, each of them counts the rooms, and neither says so.
The following spring, a Chief Ranger, she commands the general operations section of the Survey Corps' seventh revisit to Counterpane, the neighbouring archecluster where an atom is an atom and the second is the second and the dice are not ours. She signs the audit, states the fold window as a band, and listens to the bench out of a habit that has never been wrong about whether something is there. Nothing is there. The Survey Chief braids three sources and reads what no ear can reach, and writes it as cargo, which is what it is until it is home.
