Catherine Galen
Also known as: Galen
Catherine Galen holds a posting that exists because the standing agreement needed someone on it: one Ranger, permanently stationed at the Union's shuttle gate, whose entire job is the handoff. A Ranger arriving on personal leave passes out of Corps jurisdiction the moment Union escort takes over. A Ranger leaving passes back into it the moment that escort steps away. Galen is the fixed point at both ends of that line — the one constant a Ranger can count on seeing, whatever changes on the ground in between.
It is not a posting with much glory attached to it, and Galen has never pretended otherwise. Most days the job is paperwork: verifying a manifest, logging a handover, confirming a seal. What it actually requires, on the days it matters, is knowing how to read a returning officer in the first four seconds — tired, relieved, unchanged, altered — before she has said a word past the greeting, and knowing which of those readings is worth mentioning and which one is simply hers to keep.
Character Notes
Galen does not ask what leave was like. Rangers who want to say something say it unprompted, in the gap between the Union escort leaving and the shuttle boarding call, and Galen has learned to leave that gap open rather than fill it.
See Line Captain Tissadelle Shepherd and What the Hill Keeps (S05E02C01) for the one on-the-record handoff Galen has had a POV chapter for.
