Knopka
Eden Space Habitat keeps one rabbit whose file is exactly as long as it needs to be. Knopka is registered with the station's small-livestock allowance as pet (rabbit), one — keeper, Detective Marisol Achebe — and there the record ends, which makes it, by a comfortable margin, the most accurate animal file on the station.
She was a Smart Pet candidate once, for eleven days. Candidacy assessment happens, as the design protocols require, before any subsystem is ever fitted or activated — the harness programme measures what a candidate's own cognition does with an asymmetry before deciding whether to build on it. Across four sessions and two changes of assessor, Knopka's own cognition registered: the assessor's carrot; a second, better carrot; the warm patch under the recording equipment; and nothing else any instrument could detect. The board's finding is one word long — unsuitable — and, since no subsystem is fitted before certification, failing left her exactly as the programme found her: an ordinary rabbit, at liberty, with a paper trail.
Detective Achebe — one of the three junior detectives who report through the Senior Sergeant on Superintendent Oyelaran's roster, none of whom has a case worth remembering yet — took her home the week the programme circulated its washout list. Asked why, she says the rabbit had the best interview technique of anyone she'd met that month: sat still, said nothing, and let the other party talk themselves into a decision.
Character Notes
Agent Barsik has met her exactly once, ran the quiet check he runs on any animal newly resident at Eden, and closed the question with the satisfaction of a professional confirming that a control group exists. Trainee Bubochka's file leaves open whether her gift for being overlooked is tradecraft or rabbit; Knopka's leaves nothing open at all. She is not tradecraft. She is rabbit, all the way down.
The bureau's junior detectives test her now and then — a moved stapler, a rearranged shelf, once an entire desk relocated while she watched. The experimental record stands at: noticed lunch, every time; noticed nothing else, ever. Achebe has pointed out that this is a perfect detection rate on the only category Knopka has ever claimed jurisdiction over.
One consequence nobody planned: in a corner of Eden where Barsik's file says mascot and does not go very far, and Bubochka's says courtesy animal and goes rather less far than that, Knopka is the one animal whose paperwork means exactly what it says. The agency has no use for this property. The agency has, however, noticed that it exists.
In late summer 2827 she was on the Deck 7 walkway in her carrier when the deck stopped for the galley door specimen, and the specimen tried her, and she looked at the wall of the box and then at a boy's pocket, because the boy, Lev Saunders, had lunch. The boy took the lesson the rabbit did not know she was giving. Let out to make room, she went to the galley door's warm patch and was recovered there. Her file is unchanged, which is the point of her file. See Four Seconds (S02E10C01).
