A thin, wind-matted wild tabby cat standing on barnacled black rock at the tideline, surf and grey sea cliffs behind her, staring directly at the camera

Nessa has never worn a harness, carried an agency designation, or filed a single log entry in her life, and reads a boundary-adjacent wrongness more reliably than most instruments the Survey Corps trusts for the job.

She lives alone on Carraig Bán, an unnamed tidal island, surviving on tide-pool shrimp, sand-buried eggs, and whatever the rocks give up to patience. Her constraint literacy — the same sensitivity Aldera would later carry into a detective agency career — predates any augmentation, any agency, any human involvement at all. Nobody trained her to notice what she notices. She simply does.

Known History

  • Resident of Carraig Bán for longer than any record kept on the island can confirm.
  • Travelled, decades before meeting Aldera, to a place "south of here where the ground disagreed with itself" and attempted to help a single boundary-keeper managing more than one set of hands could hold — an episode she does not discuss in detail, and did not repeat.
  • Found a starving, newly stranded kitten on Carraig Bán in 2822 UCSD, fed and taught her over the course of a day, and identified the same wrongness in her that she remembered from her own travelling years.
  • Directed that kitten — Aldera — south and west toward a marsh causeway where someone was failing to hold a boundary alone, giving Aldera the first information that would eventually lead her to Elvira's outpost.

Character Notes

Nessa's teaching is never generosity dressed up as instinct. She watched Aldera fail at finding buried eggs four times before offering a correction, on the reasoning — stated plainly, once, and not repeated — that failure repeated with attention is the only teaching method that has ever worked reliably on her either. She does not soften lessons for a listener's comfort, and does not withhold them out of indifference; she simply expects an animal to do most of the work of learning itself.

She is old enough, and has narrowed her own range enough, to know precisely what she is no longer built for. Whatever she once attempted at a boundary decades ago taught her the limit of what a single determined cat can hold alone — a limit she has never fully explained to anyone, Aldera included — and it is that limit, as much as any generosity, that decided her to send a young, untrained, but genuinely capable stranger toward a task she had already learned she could not finish herself.

She gave Aldera a name and nothing more when asked, on the same principle she teaches by: a listener gets exactly as much as they're ready to carry, and no debt is repaid by explaining more than that.
