Syra
Also known as: Nai Syra
Syra is Krenyi — one of the Quiet-Built. She is approximately one hundred and fifty years old, which is not particularly old for her kind.
She is physically attractive by most humanoid standards. She cannot interbreed with humans or any other species. These two facts tend to produce a specific set of misreadings in humanoid contacts who encounter them together. Syra has encountered this pattern enough times to recognise it within seconds and name it.
She does not experience deep fear, though she experiences anxiety. She does not experience fury, though she experiences annoyance. She is polyamorous but loyal. She is honest to a degree that some people find uncomfortable. She considers this their problem to manage, not hers.
She arrived at Threshold Station in 2826 UCSD having identified a chronometer discrepancy in the public boundary survey data that the public boundary survey data had classified incorrectly. She came because the classification was wrong and someone needed to say so.
It was not the first time. Twelve years earlier, a Section Lead on the Survey Corps' first party to the membrane later registered as Counterpane, she ran the routine correlation calibration that returned a residual outside its budget, applied every correction anyone could predict, and filed three words under the raw statistics — survives correction — and declined to countersign a smaller one (Survives Correction (S01E00C05)). The finding was accepted at home four months later by people who had never left, and the record's rule that nothing read on that membrane is a finding until it has come home and passed audit was written at that review. She does not mention it. Asked, she gives the material answer: a residual was measured, and it survived correction.
Character Notes
Syra resists ambiguity not because she dislikes uncertainty but because ambiguity is a feeding condition for certain kinds of entities. She keeps her models explicit. When she does not know something, she says so.
She detects pattern drift — the moment a social situation stops matching its stated terms — and withdraws relevance from it. She does not make scenes. She simply stops participating. This tends to communicate more than a scene would have.
She will not be mythologised. If someone begins treating her as a symbol or an archetype, she names it and returns the conversation to material terms.
She is initially trusting of new contacts and can be briefly taken in by human social deceptions she has not encountered before. She recalibrates quickly.
On the Krenyi term
"Krenyi" is used in story to avoid confusion with Naiads, which are river-bound entities, not persons. "Nai" as a state means still relevant here — not a greeting or a title, but an acknowledgement that she remains present and engaged.
