Hymn of the Thin Places
Category: Cultural Record
FIELD TRANSCRIPTION — COMPOSITE TEXT
Current standing: No charter status, no single credited author, no single owning chapter. Sung at Ranger memorials, boundary-loss services, and commissionings across multiple worlds; never formally adopted by directive, never disclaimed by one either — the same standing the Archive notes for more than one piece of Ranger cultural practice that outran its own paperwork.
Compiler's note: Fellowship chapters on at least six worlds sing some variant of this hymn, and no two verse sets match exactly — a difference chapters attribute to the pattern the hymn names rather than to any transcription error. The refrain is the one element every recorded variant holds in common, word for word, across every chapter that has ever submitted a copy to the comparative archive.
Verse (as sung at the Threshold Station memorial, 2830 UCSD)
A hand came to the thin place once, named what the thick air would not say. No house had asked it in. No house sent it away. It named the truth and left before the naming had a name.
Refrain
Carry the lamp, not the argument. Carry the naming, not whose hand it was. The thin place doesn't ask what you believe — only whether you'll still stand there when it thins.
Verse (as sung at Cadet commissionings, Eden Space Habitat)
We do not know its language, or its year, or its face. A hundred houses each kept a different name for the same grace. We are not here to settle whose account is true. We are here because the lamp was lit, and someone has to carry it through.
Refrain
Carry the lamp, not the argument. Carry the naming, not whose hand it was. The thin place doesn't ask what you believe — only whether you'll still stand there when it thins.
Archivist's note (Fellowship comparative archive, cross-chapter submission): We are asked, every few years, to determine which chapter's verse is the "original." The honest answer is that the question assumes a fact not in evidence. What every submission agrees on is the refrain, and the refrain does not name a tradition, a doctrine, or a birthplace. It names the one thing every account files identically: someone stood in the thin place, said the true thing, and left before anyone could thank them properly. The Star Rangers did not write this hymn. They inherited a room where it was already the only thing everyone present could sing together.
