Spoke Car

In Union Irish: Carr Spóca — a spoke car; spóca is the Union's word for a wheel's spoke

A spoke car is the radial car of a spin habitat: it runs the length of one of the spokes that join the low-gravity hub to the inhabited ring, and it is how a body gets from one to the other. On Eden Space Habitat the hub carries docking, cargo transfer and the offices clustered nearest the Eden Passage monitoring stations; the ring carries nearly everything else, under full spin. The Ring-Rail circles the ring and is where the habitat's daily life happens. The spoke cars are the much shorter set that cross between the two, and the record's own distinction is the useful one: the spokes are a connector, not a commute.

The ride has a physics a rider feels without being told it. Weight on a spin habitat is the floor pushing up against a body that wants to go straight on, and it scales with distance from the axis; so a car leaving the hub starts in near-nothing and arrives at the ring at the habitat's full standing weight, and a car going the other way sheds it. The spin also carries a sideways lean on the way, since the car is changing how fast it is being swung round as it changes its radius, and the rail is built to take that rather than the passengers. The net of it is a few minutes in which the body is rearranging what down means, which is why the trip is a good one for a kit check and a poor one for anything that needs a steady hand.

One spoke car on Eden is not like the others. The innermost cars, terminating nearest the Passage monitoring stations, need a clearance that ordinary Ring-Rail fare does not grant, set by the Survey Corps and Solar System Defence Command's joint oversight of the Passage rather than by the Compact. It is the one piece of Eden's civil transit a Ranger with Passage business may ride without the habitat's two chains of authority consulting each other, and the Ring-Rail page carries the detail.

Example: in Nothing to Report (S09E01C01) Varn checks the kit list twice on the spoke car down from the hub, and the car lets Varn off on the ring, which is the moment a new Deputy is on Eden proper rather than merely docked at it. In the fourth chapter of the same episode a resident knows something the way he knew a spoke car was about to stop: a change in the body's weight that arrives a beat before the halt, and that nobody who rides one regularly has to think about.
