Canonical Glossary and Terminology Migration Guide

An archivist with a red pencil can change how a civilization remembers itself. This page exists for that work: to keep terms aligned before confusion hardens into false canon.

This page is the authoritative terminology reference for Star Rangers cosmology. Use canonical terms in new writing and migrate legacy terms according to the mapping tables below.

Note: GitHub Pages configuration lives at /settings/pages, but lore text canon is maintained in repository source files like this one.

Canonical Hierarchy (Authoritative)

Hyperomnium
→ Kieme
→ Conseleme
→ Metawrights
→ Formwrights
→ Archewrights
→ Worldwrights
→ Universes with Concordant Zones (Concordance)
→ Telearchs
→ Mediarchs
→ Celestials
→ Levrils

The listing above is the spine, and it is mostly hierarchical — with two matrix exceptions: Worldwrights and Telearchs are parallel branches under the Archewrights (creation and continuity, as peers), and the Mediarchs are co-created, standing under both the Telearchs and the Concordant Principals. Descent in the Cascade is creative rather than imperative — higher strata create and define the layers beneath them more than they command them. Time runs in three registers: Material-layer time (Celestials and below), conceptual time / meta-time (the middle strata — Mediarchs, Telearchs, Worldwrights, and universes' native authorities), and outright eternity (above the Worldwrights only). See The Cosmic Cascade for the full treatment.

Role Clarifications

  • Archewrights define archetypes and possibility spaces.
  • Worldwrights create primary universe sets. The universe is the unit of creation; the Concordant Zone is the unit of consistency within it.
  • Concordant Zones (Concordants) are bounded regions within a universe where one internally consistent rule-set holds. They are places, not minds.
  • Universal Authorities (formerly "Concordants" in the governance sense) are the native governance bodies of each universe, maintaining CEI and systemic balance. They are not supra-universal, and they are not a separate tier: an Authority is the universe's Council of Harmonarchs plus a presiding founder (its seed mind) or, failing one, a lead Harmonarch.
  • Concordant Principals (commonly Harmonarchs — both canonical, Principal the formal title) are the governing minds of individual Concordant Zones, stewarding each zone's rule-set under the universe's Universal Authority — which is the council they themselves sit in. Every Harmonarch holds two seats: its own zone, and the Council.
  • Telearchs coordinate large-scale operational activity inside and across governed systems. They are a Cascade tier, native to no universe — distinct in kind from both Universal Authorities and Concordant Principals, and a parallel branch with the Worldwrights under the Archewrights. See Who Governs a Universe.
  • Mediarchs (commonly Exarchs; formerly "Dynarchs," and before that "higher celestials") encapsulate and govern physical laws and forces — Gravity, Electromagnetics, Nature. Co-created by both branches of the matrix; ranked between Concordant Principals and Celestials, standing under both the Telearchs and the Principals, with continuity prevailing on conflict. Mediarch and Exarch are both canonical; "Exarch" is the older devotional form. Dynarch is retired — see the Migration Map.
  • Celestials create or supervise systemic agents.
  • Levrils are cosmic functionaries and super-technicians.
  • Levrils divide into two subclasses — Higher Levrils and Dragons — ranked by seniority. Both hold full Cascade standing.
  • Dragons are low-ranking Levrils, not monsters.
  • Overbearers, Beautiful Monsters, and Threnes are meta-dimensional beings ranked below Celestials, like Levrils, but they are not Levrils and hold no Cascade standing — see Class II under Meta-Dimensional Beings below.

World Structure Rules (Canonical)

  1. Primary universes are created by Worldwrights.
  2. Secondary and tertiary derivative universes emerge through overlap/intersection between primary universes.
  3. Overbearers, monsters, shadow entities, and similar beings arise from overlap distortions. The named entity type Overbearers (see Class II under Meta-Dimensional Beings below) is a formalization of this rule's first term, not a separate concept; the rule called them demons until 2026-09-23.
  4. A universe seeded through noögenic transference begins as a Noögenic Protouniverse and remains under the jurisdiction of its parent universe's Telearchs — and the higher Cascade strata reachable through them — until it stabilizes an independent Universal Authority (formerly phrased "Concordant-equivalent governance").

Canonical Terms

Archewrights

  • Layer: High-Order Design
  • Definition: Define archetypes and possibility spaces from which valid universe architectures can be instantiated.
  • Do not use for: Direct creation of primary universes.

Worldwrights

  • Layer: Universe Architecture
  • Definition: Create primary universe sets and design interaction regimes between universes.
  • Notes: May indirectly enable secondary/tertiary universe formation via overlap conditions.

Concordant Zones

  • Layer: Universe Structure (In-Universe)
  • Definition: Bounded regions within a universe where one internally consistent physical and Etheric rule-set holds. Concordance is the plural; Concordant alone always means the zone.
  • Synonyms, by register (settled 2026-07-28): Coherent cosmic region — the Survey Corps' plain-language gloss, for first mention and cross-species records; exact, and clumsy in running prose. Megaexpanse — popular, non-specialist, and imprecise: it names the scale and drops the internal consistency, which is the whole content of the term. Both are legitimate in the mouths of the people who use them; neither replaces Concordant Zone, and the Archive's own voice uses the canonical term.
  • Notes: Places, not minds. A Concordant Zone exists only inside a universe a Worldwright made.

Solar System Concord (settled 2026-07-28)

  • Layer: Institution (In-Universe, Material)
  • Definition: The Solar System's continuing body of shared civil law and standards — personhood, AI governance, cyborg certification, navigation and communication law — founded 2543 UCSD within the Tycho Accords and enforced by every government since. Not a government, and nothing cosmological.
  • The name: Founded as the Solar System Concordant, borrowing the cosmological word as a deliberate overreach — a promise that inside this system the rules would hold. Restyled the Solar System Concord in 2790 UCSD, giving the word back. Same institution; no clause, commission or signatory changed.
  • Notes: This is why Concordant now has exactly one live sense. The compact is the Concord; its era and civilization take the same word (Concord-wide, the Concord period); the zone above keeps Concordant. Do not write "Solar System Concordant" for present-day usage.
  • Dating rule: Pre-2790 documents carry the founding name correctly and are quoted as written, not corrected — the Star Rangers' 2723 charter preamble ("the limits of Solar System Concordant coherence") is the standing example. Post-2790 usage of the old name is an error.

Music Corps, Xenomusicology, the Slipwave project (settled 2026-09-28)

  • Layer: Institution (In-Universe, Star Rangers)
  • Definition: The Music Corps is a specialist corps and a college of the Academy, on the record's open list of corps; the musician specialization is its own. Xenomusicology is its branch, a school of the college, for the comparative study of how the peoples the Rangers meet understand music, or whatever stands in its place, in their cultures and in their bodies. The Slipwave project is that branch's file for the placement of a Novice (Tissadelle Shepherd) in the dock-circuit band Slipwave; to the circuit it was a band, to the branch a project, and the band was never a Ranger band.
  • Notes: Dermot's directions of 2026-09-28, verbatim in story-bible/intake-2026-09-28.md. The Union's Irish for the branch, Ceoleolaíocht Chomparáideach, renders the sense of the coinage (comparative musicology) under The Union's Irish rules, approved by Dermot the same evening. Xenomusicology is the branch; a Ranger of it is a xenomusicologist; the corps is never the Music Corps band or a ceremonial unit. The prefix names a comparison, not a class of being (Dermot, same day): humans are not privileged among the sapient peoples; xeno- and alien in a discipline's name mean a comparative study, or the study of communication between beings of different physiology; and no one is called an alien unless unknown to the Star Rangers. The words that follow (Dermot, same day, calling them people is fine, if understood in context): the Corps' word for all known sapient beings, across the Rangers, the Federation of Sentient Beings and the Cerebraun Hegemony alike, is people, a people for one and the peoples or the known peoples for all, understood in context; sapient stays an adjective; a polity's own name for itself (the Federation's sentient beings) is kept as its name. For bodies, the taxonomy page's frame is the word for how a body is built and physiology for how it works, with cross-frame as the adjective where the old phrase would have said alien.

Union Irish, the Union's Irish (settled 2026-09-24; wording 2026-10-05)

  • Layer: Language (In-Universe, Celtic Union of Planets)
  • Definition: Union Irish is the modern Gaelic of the Celtic Union in the 29th century: an in-story language, not the Irish of any real century. It descends from the Irish the Currach Fleet carried, three centuries on, and is its own language: the spoken tongue was partly lost in the transit generations and rebuilt after landfall from the surviving texts and from linguistic principles (the comparative method against the Fleet's other Celtic languages, internal reconstruction, analogy), which is why it is regular where the old language was irregular and why its coinages follow principle (Dermot, 2026-10-05; the account is on the Celtic Union page). The glossary labels each entry's line In Union Irish and links it here, so a reader who knows the living language is not told that this is theirs. It is not the Irish of the arks' century, and it is not the old language. Every glossary entry carries the Union's term for it, with a literal sense, on one line under the title.
  • Rules: Translate where the English coined, and borrow where the English borrowed. A people's own name is kept. Where the Union already had a word (Na Daoine Maithe), it is the Union's word that is used. Ilchruinne and fian are never used.
  • Notes: A register, not multi-language support: there are no translated pages. The rule against conlangs governs non-human languages only.

Maor Réalta and the Irish rank styles (settled 2026-09-24)

  • Layer: Institution (In-Universe, Celtic Union of Planets — a rendering of Star Ranger usage)
  • Definition: Maor Réalta, plural Maoir Réalta — warden of the stars — is the Celtic Union's Irish rendering of Star Ranger, and the corps is na Maoir Réalta. The full ladder in Irish (Nóibhíseach, Dalta, Leas-Oifigeach, Oifigeach Allamuigh, Oifigeach Sinsearach, Príomhoifigeach, Ceann Rannóige, Ardoifigeach, Maor Stáisiúin, Maor Loinge, Captaen Líne, Captaen Réalta, Ardchaptaen, Comhairle na nArdchaptaen, An Triúracht, Triúracht Allamuigh) and Chief's duty titles are on The Ladder in Other Tongues.
  • The name: Irish maor covers both warden and ranger, which is why one word carries the corps and both warden ranks.
  • Notes: A rendering, not a rank style. The rendering belongs to the Union, not the Corps, and the filed English styles on Rank and the Chain of Command govern. Where a rendering and a tab disagree, the tab is right. Do not write the Irish forms as the Corps' own titles outside Union contexts. The alien renderings on the same page are in translation, never in a people's own phonology.
  • Dating rule: The Union's rendering dates from after reconnection. It named the ship's second Maor Loinge from the start, so the 2833 Archwarden restyling left it unchanged.

Uachtarán / Seanad / Garda an Uachtaráin (settled 2026-09-10)

  • Layer: Institution (In-Universe, Celtic Union of Planets)
  • Definition: The Uachtarán — President, in Irish — is the Celtic Union's ceremonial head of state; the Seanad — Senate — is its ceremonial upper house. Neither holds power, since the charter has no Union-wide executive; the working business stays with the rotating council. The Garda an Uachtaráin — the President's Guard — is the Union's presidential protection unit, the one standing formation of a mostly ceremonial military. Reader-facing entry: The Celtic Union of Planets.
  • The name: Irish. Uachtarán (president), genitive an Uachtaráin; Seanad (senate); written with their fadas. Dermot's directions of 2026-09-10 wrote Garda an Uchtarain and seanad; the standard spellings are adopted and flagged in story-bible/intake-2026-09-10.md.
  • Notes: Not a Union police — the charter leaves law to each member world, and Tír na nÓg's Gardaí are that world's own service — and not the Highland Guard, which is the ceremonial military's own body (settled 2026-09-10) and whose honour escort under Union protocol is ceremony. The Garda an Uachtaráin protects one office and polices nobody. The Seanad is seated by the Seanad Draw (below; settled 2026-10-06) and represents the six charter worlds equally. Succession and term of the Uachtarán, where either sits, and where the unit's members are drawn from: not established.
  • Dating rule: No founding dates on record. Pre-reconnection Union documents are quoted as written.

Taoiseach / Príomh-Aire, and Crannchur an tSeanaid (settled 2026-10-06)

  • Layer: Institution (In-Universe, Celtic Union of Planets)
  • Definition: Each member world's head of government, styled in the charter's Irish Taoiseach (chief) or Príomh-Aire (first minister) according to what the world's own constitution calls the office; the person who speaks for the world at the rotating council. The Union has no counterpart above them, only the Uachtarán. Crannchur an tSeanaid — the lot of the Senate, reader-facing as The Seanad Draw — is how the Seanad is seated: candidates drawn by lot on each world, weighted to the world's people in proportion, then elected from among the drawn; one unbidden re-election, then a decaying ticket back into the lot; a third of each bench seated at a time; a clan on the ballot as the registry recorded it, and no clan nominating, endorsing or spending.
  • The name: Irish. Taoiseach, genitive an Taoisigh, plural Taoisigh; Príomh-Aire, hyphenated, plural Príomh-Airí; crannchur (a casting of lots), genitive of Seanad is Seanaid with the article an tSeanaid. Dermot's direction of 2026-10-06 wrote Priomh Aire and Uchtarain; the standard spellings are adopted and flagged in story-bible/intake-2026-10-06.md.
  • Notes: On Aethelrock, which has no planetary executive, the style attaches for Union purposes to the clan head holding the Union seat under the Ridgemoot rotation (a reading put to Dermot, 2026-10-06). Whether senators form inter-clan associations or clans divide into factions on the floor: not established, by his direction (to be determined). Which worlds seat their own assemblies by the draw: each world's own record; Aethelrock's Ridgemoot does not. Sizes are the charter's arithmetic (Dermot, 2026-10-06): a lower house of the cube root of a world's electors, an upper house of about a third of that, an executive council of about a quarter of that again, deputies not counted; the Union Seanad a third of the cube root of the Union's whole electorate, divided equally among the six worlds (a reading put to him, since the Union has no lower house). No electorate is on record, so no number is.
  • Dating rule: No founding date for the draw on record.

Oversight Council (settled 2026-09-30)

  • Layer: Institution (In-Universe, Star Rangers / Solar System)
  • Definition: The civilian body the 2723 charter makes the Star Rangers accountable to, and the only one — it holds the Triumvirate to account, convenes inquiries, confers citations and holds ceremonial record, and cannot command a Ranger, direct the Safety Corps or defund the Corps. Created by the 2722 Consolidation Accords, which seat it from the Solar System's self-governing habitats and outer stations — one voting seat per settlement above the habitat threshold, the delegate appointed by that settlement's own government on its own terms, the chair rotating by session; no seat for the SSDC, the Concord or any planetary government; since contact with the Federation of Sentient Beings it has added non-voting seats for polities that recognise the Corps (the Federation holds one, the Cerebraun Hegemony declines, the Celtic Union has not answered), and has resolved, non-bindingly, that it ought in the end to be seated by those who recognise the Corps. Reader-facing entry: The Oversight Council.
  • The name: The Oversight Council, or the Council where the context is the charter; never the Civilian Oversight Council as a proper name, since civilian is a description the charter uses and not part of the title. Distinct from the Council of High Captains, which is the Corps' own and sits inside it.
  • Notes: Dermot's rulings of 2026-09-30 (story-bible/intake-2026-09-30.md, last section): the neutrality clause generalised past the Solar System by the structure of recognition rather than by amendment (a neutral that excepts its own species forfeits every other people's recognition at once), and the Council gradually evolves from a Solar System body toward one seated by the recognising polities — the direction is canon, the destination is not. The original seating was ruled the same day on the recommendation put (Original seating as recommended): the habitats and outer stations, the parties whose escalation gap the charter closed. The Federation's seat was first filled in 2791 UCSD (Dermot's ask of 2026-10-01, Add the year the Federation's seat was first filled; the year recommended and adopted, story-bible/intake-2026-10-01.md).
  • Dating rule: Created 2722–2723 UCSD; the non-voting seats postdate first contact with the Federation, decades after the charter; the Federation's was first filled 2791 UCSD, and the Hegemony's and the Union's offers are undated.

Universal Concord Standard Date (UCSD) (settled 2026-08-05)

  • Layer: Standard (In-Universe, Material)
  • Definition: The Concord's civil dating standard, and the common spine the public record converts to. Continuous with old Earth's common-era count — no reset, one number line — renumbered by a fixed offset, UCSD year = CE year + 200 (arithmetic, not a conversion table), and applied retroactively to dates that precede its adoption, as calendar reforms always are. The count's zero point is given no in-world significance: the epoch commemorates nothing stated in canon. (Amended 2026-08-07: this row's earlier wording — "1216 AD and 2543 UCSD sit on one number line with no conversion table between them" — implied a zero offset, while the corpus consistently pairs dates at +200 in five files; usage is ruled correct and the row now states the offset. Time itself is linear, one-dimensional, and real — settled the same day; every dating difficulty in canon is measurement, not metaphysics.)
  • What it is not: Not the timeline (one shared history, many notations — other civilisations' reckonings are converted, never replaced, and a document is filed in its author's own notation with the UCSD conversion noted beside); not instantaneous (no faster-than-light communication, so time is carried — courier synchronisation, transit-lagged archives); not perfectly uniform (relativistic dilation between regions is real, minimal at civil scale, and corrected as routine).
  • Dating rule: Use AD for pre-spaceflight historical dates in sources that would write them so (Saint Aoife, Brother Daire); use UCSD for the space era. A dilation effect is never a valid explanation for a date arithmetic error in the corpus — an inconsistency between two dates is a mistake to fix.
  • Notes: Reader-facing entries: Universal Concord Standard Date (UCSD), Timekeeping and the Common Record, and Universal Concord Standard Date: Count and Calibration. No migration row — the abbreviation was always UCSD; the expansion is new, nothing is renamed. The older working expansion "Universal Cosmic Stardate" was swept from the corpus 2026-08-07 (it survives only in the calibration article's URL slug, kept so links don't break); folk variants of the expansion live in the Codex, not here.

Imperium High Council / Convenor (settled 2026-07-30)

  • Layer: Institution and office (In-Universe, Material — historical)
  • Definition: The High Council is the advisory chamber convened in the Imperium's final decade, seating senior officers, the technical directorates, and outer-station representatives holding provisional consultative status. The Convenor chairs it, drawn from its own membership.
  • The point of it: Advisory, not executive. It never displaced the Administrator-Supreme, the Imperium's actual apex office throughout its span — no Council resolution bound one, and no Convenor ever issued an order. Both terms are additions to the record, not replacements: nothing about Administrator-Supreme changes, and The Unbroken Command still turns on a stand-down order only an Administrator-Supreme could have given.
  • Dating rule: Late Imperium only, roughly the final decade before 2609 UCSD. There is no High Council in the Imperium's founding or middle period, and writing one into 2543–2599 is an error. The Convenor's chair matters because it is the first seat in Solar System governance since the Consortium's collapse that a civilian could hold without a service record.
  • Notes: The Imperium had no emperor and never claimed one — the name is the misleading part. No coronation, no succession by descent, no throne; the apex was a serving officer's office filled from fleet seniority. The MSC's own advisory councils were modelled on the High Council and inherited its flaw: a chamber that may be consulted and an executive that need not listen.

Archwarden (settled 2026-07-29)

  • Layer: Rank (In-Universe, Star Rangers)
  • Definition: The Star Rangers rank one rung above Starwarden and one below Line Captain, held by a vessel's second-in-command. Reader-facing entry: Rank and the Chain of Command.
  • The name: Restyled Archwarden in 2833 UCSD, from Starwarden First Officer — also written Starwarden First Class and Executive Starwarden First Class. Three written forms for one rank, all three of them misleading in the same way: First Officer named the post (first officer of a vessel) and never meant first officer to a Starwarden, but that is how it read, and the two ranks are consecutive rungs rather than a commander and a deputy. Archwarden says senior warden, which is what the rank is.
  • Notes: A restyling, not a reorganisation — the rank's seniority, duties and place on the ladder are unchanged, and an Archwarden is nobody's deputy. The retitling amended every regulation naming the rank, the Field Triumvirate clause included, where the old style was most costly: that clause names a warden-rank and a Starwarden in one breath, so the old wording implied a chain of command between them that does not exist.
  • Dating rule (amended 2026-09-29, Dermot's direction Replace Starwarden First Class rank with Archwarden): the Archive's own narration says Archwarden throughout, whatever year a chapter is set in, the same way it renders every date in UCSD — so s05e02c03, the 2831 Dock Seven convening, now reads Archwarden where it read the old style. What keeps the older styles is a period document quoted as written: a pre-2833 log, order or regulation carries the style of its day, and is not corrected. Post-2833 usage of the old styles, in any register, is an error. Until this amendment the rule read the other way for narration, and the chapter was the standing example of the old style being right as published; the journal entry of 2026-07-29 records that earlier position. Note the contrast with the Dynarch → Mediarch row below, which is an Archive terminology correction with no dating rule: this one is an institution renaming its own rank on a date, so both names are correct, each for its period.

Universal Authorities

  • Layer: Governance (Universe-Level)
  • Definition: The native governance body of a universe as a whole — its Concordant Principals in council, plus a presiding seat — regulating CEI, entropy behavior, and continuity constraints. Not an "intelligence" or a mind: the Principals who constitute it are minds, and the body they constitute is not a larger one. Earlier definitions read "the native governance intelligence," which is the singular-mind reading this term's own migration row retires (phrasing corrected 2026-07-28).
  • Composition (settled 2026-07-26): A body, not a separate mind installed above the zones — the Council of Harmonarchs (every Concordant Principal in the universe, sitting together) plus a presiding seat held by the universe's founder, its originating seed mind where the universe was noögenically seeded. Where there is no founder, the Council seats a lead Harmonarch from among its own members. Same office; different occupant.
  • Notes: This resolves the "singular or plural mind" phrasing in earlier records — both describe one institution. A Consensus Field is how the Council decides; a founder is who presides while it does. A plural formation descended from a seed mind (a Synarch Mind among them) occupies the presiding seat as one member, not as a second council. Formerly recorded as "Concordants" in the governance sense — that usage is deprecated. Universal Authorities are not supra-universal: their writ ends at their own universe's edge.
  • Consequence: An Authority cannot predate its universe's zones. No Concordants → no Harmonarchs → no Council → no Authority, which is precisely what makes a Noögenic Protouniverse proto: a founder without a Council is not an Authority.
  • On "answer to": Principals answer to their universe's Authority, and that Authority is the body they sit in — subordination to a council, not to a superior being. The Council's writ is universe-wide where a Principal's ends at its zone boundary, and a Harmonarch outvoted in council is bound by the decision inside its own zone regardless.

Council of Harmonarchs

  • Layer: Governance (Universe-Level)
  • Definition: All of a universe's Concordant Principals sitting together as the deliberative body of its Universal Authority. Reader-facing entry: Council of Harmonarchs.
  • Notes: Not a separate tier in the Cascade — the same beings as the Principals, in their second seat. Decisions are reached through a Consensus Field rather than by vote-counting. Compare the Star Rangers' own Council of High Captains: every serving High Captain sitting together, holding authority none holds alone.

Lead Harmonarch

  • Layer: Governance (Universe-Level)
  • Definition: The Concordant Principal holding the presiding seat of a Council of Harmonarchs in a universe with no founder.
  • Notes: A seat, not a rank — a lead Harmonarch is not senior to other Principals in their own zones, and holds no zone-level authority beyond its own. Structurally interchangeable with a founder; the difference is origin, not power.

Founder (Universal Authority)

  • Layer: Governance (Universe-Level)
  • Definition: A universe's originating seed mind, holding the presiding seat of its Universal Authority once a Council of Harmonarchs has formed around it.
  • Notes: Only universes raised by noögenic seeding have one. The seat exists from transference, but the office does not: an Authority requires both parts.
  • Related Terms: Seed Mind Lifecycle, Noögenic Protouniverse, Synarch Mind

Concordant Principals (Harmonarchs)

  • Layer: Governance (Zone-Level)
  • Definition: The governing mind of a single Concordant Zone, administering the zone's rule-set day to day under the universe's Universal Authority. Commonly called a Harmonarch; both names are canonical, with "Concordant Principal" the formal office title.
  • Notes: Stewards, not legislators — the rules they administer are the Worldwright's design. A Principal's writ ends at its zone's boundary. Together with the Telearch line, Principals co-define the Mediarchs of their zone's forces.
  • Two seats: every Harmonarch governs its own zone and sits on the Council of Harmonarchs that constitutes its universe's Universal Authority. The Authority a Principal answers to is that council — the body it is a member of — not a separate mind above it. Being outvoted there still binds it at home.

Telearchs

  • Layer: Coordination
  • Definition: Coordinate large-scale operations across governed systems and synchronize interventions. The Cascade's continuity branch — a parallel branch with the Worldwrights under the Archewrights (continuity and creation as peers), not descended from them.
  • Native to no universe: distinct in kind from both Universal Authorities and Concordant Principals, which are a universe's own resident governance. A Telearch supervises from outside.
  • Reach inside (settled 2026-07-26, recorded here 2026-07-28): because they are native to nowhere, Telearchs reach into a universe by two routes. The standing one is the Mediarch tier — a Mediarch is a proxy Telearch, the line acting inside a universe scoped to one force-domain; see that entry, where the consequences of this are worked out, and which is what the tier is named for. The occasional one is an Avatar: a separate limited person crossing into Material time at Celestial level or below.
  • Notes: Hold continuing jurisdiction over any Noögenic Protouniverse seeded from within their parent universe until it stabilizes independent governance — exercised from inside, by Avatar.

Noögenic Descent (settled 2026-07-28)

  • Layer: Universe Structure
  • Rule: Primary / secondary / derived classifies a universe by how it was made; noögenic descent describes who it came from. The two are independent axes, and a noögenic universe is not a fourth entry on the first list — it receives no Worldwright (so it is not primary) and does not arise from the interaction of primaries (so it is not derived).
  • Both ends are free: a parent universe may itself be primary, secondary, or derived — seeding requires a mind capable of it, not a pedigree — and a matured noögenic universe's standing is not set by its parent's.
  • Maturity is the whole distinction from derived. A derived universe is permanently subordinate and never graduates. A noögenic protouniverse is subordinate only while unfinished: parent Telearch jurisdiction ends the moment it stabilizes a Universal Authority of its own. What it becomes is the adult child of its parent — grown, independent, answerable in nothing. The kinship is permanent and carries no authority; the authority was temporary and is finished.
  • Notes: Proto is a stage, not a class. It never acquires a Worldwright and never needed one — what it was owed was a start, not an author.

Noögenic Protouniverse

  • Layer: Universe Architecture (Noögenic, Pre-Governance)
  • Definition: The nascent universe-state that begins at Noöseed transference and precedes the formation of a successor universe's own Universal Authority (formerly phrased "Concordant-equivalent governance").
  • Notes: Has no independent seat in the Cascade. Falls under the jurisdiction of its parent universe's Telearchs, and the higher Cascade strata reachable through them, until it stabilizes governance of its own. Does not receive a new Worldwright.
  • Related Terms: Noöseed, Telearchs, Seed Mind Lifecycle

Mediarchs (formerly Dynarchs)

  • Layer: Force Governance
  • Definition: Beings that encapsulate and govern physical laws and forces — Gravity, Electromagnetics, Nature (biological life), and the other force-domains — administering their lawful operation across Concordant Zones and boundaries.
  • Nature (settled 2026-07-26): A Mediarch is a proxy Telearch — the Telearch line acting inside a universe, scoped to one force-domain. Telearchs are native to no universe and supervise from outside; a force must be administered from within the thing it runs through, and the Mediarch tier is how. This is the tier's substance, not an analogy.
  • The name (settled 2026-07-29): Mediarch — from medius, the middle — names the tier for the mediating office it holds, standing between a continuity branch native to nowhere and the inside of the universe that branch has to reach. It replaces Dynarch (dynamis, force), which named the tier for its subject matter: the one thing it does not own, since the rule-sets are the Worldwright's and no Mediarch can rewrite a zone's physics. Same tier, same definition, no change of meaning. Exarch — the older devotional form, a delegated governor holding a province from a distant throne — was already naming the same mediation and remains co-canonical.
  • Notes: Co-created — the Telearch line supplies what a Mediarch is, the Concordant Principal line supplies the zone-scoping that gives it somewhere to act; two parents of different kind, substance and jurisdiction. Ranked between Concordant Principals and Celestials, standing under both the Telearchs (continuity) and the Principals (zone-local operation). Continuity prevails on conflict because continuity is what a Mediarch substantially is — a proxy cannot rule against the office it proxies for — rather than by an arbitration rule imposed from above. The lowest timeless stratum. Before "Dynarch," the tier was called "higher celestials" — a legacy term retired as ambiguous with "High Celestials" (Telearchs); see the Migration Map for both rows.
  • Every force divides the same way (settled 2026-07-28): each force-domain has a local aspect — behaving ordinarily inside one membrane, governed there by the zone's Principal — and a continuity aspect, holding across boundaries and universes, which runs up the Telearch line because only a trans-membrane office can hold a trans-membrane fact. The dual obligation is the shape the forces already have, not an arrangement laid over them, and it is why continuity prevails on conflict: the local aspect is the one that stops at the edge. Gravity is the domain where the continuity aspect is measurable rather than merely structural — gravity is geometry, and the Common Manifold's 12–15 band carries geometric strain between membranes. Electromagnetics and Nature have no band and no far-side reach. See What Crosses the Interval, and Why in Concordant Membranes.
  • Not an avatar: the Cascade's other instrument for acting from inside crosses a temporal register into Celestial level or below and is a separate limited person. A Mediarch stays in conceptual time above the Celestials and is a standing office, not a person sent down. Two answers to one problem, at different depths.

Celestials

  • Layer: Supervisory/Agentic
  • Definition: Create or supervise systemic agents used for implementation and oversight.
  • Notes: The Cascade's temporal threshold — Celestials and below are immanent in Material-layer time; the middle strata above them exist in conceptual time; eternity proper begins above the Worldwrights.
  • Classification Rule: Graded within the tier by delegation from the Mediarchs (ruled 2026-09-23): the breadth of scope the Mediarchs, as the Telearch line's proxies inside a universe, entrust a Celestial with, a grade of authority and never of reach. The grades are unnamed and their number is not established. Only Celestials and Levrils are ranked within their strata; every other stratum differs by domain or function, and Champions are unranked. Never name a Celestial grade High or higher Celestial: both are retired designations for other tiers.

Avatar (Incarnated)

  • Layer: Exception (Temporal-Register Crossing)
  • Definition: An incarnation of a higher stratum — conceptual-time or eternal — as a person operating at Celestial level or below, without the full authority, power, or knowledge of its source — like its source, without being the same person as its source.
  • Notes: The source remains in its own register, unbreached; the avatar is a separate, limited, immanent person. From inside Material time an avatar's record is indistinguishable from a Champion's. For middle strata this is a working instrument, not a theory: Telearch avatars are how protouniverse jurisdiction is exercised from inside.

Levrils

  • Layer: Operational Functionaries
  • Definition: Cosmic functionaries and super-technicians handling execution, maintenance, and specialist interventions.

Levril Subclasses

Levril is a rank in the Cascade, not a single form. Two subclasses are recognized, ordered by seniority rather than dimensional reach. Both hold full Cascade standing.

Higher Levrils

  • Layer: Levril Subclass
  • Definition: The most senior Levrils, closest in authority to Celestials; entrusted with cross-Concordant coordination and the selection or mentorship of especially high-causal-relevance Champions.
  • Classification Rule: Distinct from Meta-Levrils (a Concordant-span property). "Higher" denotes rank within the Levril tier, not dimensional reach.

Dragons

  • Layer: Levril Subclass
  • Definition: Low-ranking Levrils specialized for constrained high-energy and frontier functions.
  • Classification Rule: Not monster-class entities. In Archive voice dragon means this rank and nothing else (ruled 2026-09-23). Common speech calls every Levril a dragon because Dragons are the Levrils people see; quote that use as speech, never adopt it.

Meta-Dimensional Beings (Non-Levril)

Ranked below Celestials, like Levrils, but holding no Cascade standing — see Meta-Dimensional Beings: Classification for the full Class I/II/III framework.

Overbearers

  • Layer: Class II — the Unfounded (sapient monster)
  • Definition: Sapient meta-dimensional predators that feed through confrontation, intimidation, and forced submission rather than deception.
  • Classification Rule: Not a Levril. A formalization of the first term in World Structure Rule 3, not a Cascade-ranked entity. Filed as Demons until 2026-09-23 and renamed because the word brought a theology the record refuses (see the migration map); demon is now a devotional word only, as angel is.

Obligers

  • Layer: Class II — the Unfounded (sapient monster)
  • Definition: Sapient meta-dimensional predators that present as obliging and feed on the obligations that creates: ambiguity, desire loops and undefined social debt.
  • Classification Rule: Not a Levril. Filed as Court-Fae until 2026-09-23 (see the migration map). No court, rank or coordination: the Unfounded have none.

Caomhari

  • Layer: Class II — founded neighbour: not meta-dimensional in origin, filed in Class II because it presents as meta-dimensional across the membrane; not predatory
  • Definition: The official record's name for the beings native to Tír Tairngire, from Irish caomh, gentle, kind. The Celtic Union's own name is the Good People; off-world speech says elves.
  • Classification Rule: Archive voice writes Caomhari (named 2026-09-23). The Good People is quoted as the Union's word, as Filinesse is kept; elves is quoted as speech and never adopted. Never give them a body in a description or an image prompt: what is seen is a presentation.

Beautiful Monsters

  • Layer: Class II — the Unfounded (sapient monster)
  • Definition: Sapient meta-dimensional predators that feed on desire and vanity, manifesting as objects of attraction or awe to draw victims into dependency.
  • Classification Rule: Not a Levril. Distinct from the informal nickname "beautiful monsters" applied to Obligers, Gilded Saints, and Cute Predators as a group (see Predatory Entities) — this is one specific named type, not the collective nickname.

Threnes

  • Layer: Class II — the Unfounded (sapient monster)
  • Definition: Sapient meta-dimensional predators that feed on unresolved grief and mourning, prolonging loss rather than allowing it to resolve.
  • Classification Rule: Not a Levril. Functionally parallel to Gilded Saints' closure-prevention, but keyed to grief rather than virtue.

Ghost-Witches

  • Layer: Class II — the Unfounded (sapient monster)
  • Definition: Sapient meta-dimensional predators that feed on unpaid guilt, presenting as the returned dead with a grievance and a remedy whose price is amends that never settle the debt.
  • Classification Rule: Not a Levril, and not a Membrane Shadow: the Shadow is physics and never speaks; the ghost-witch wears the ghost every tradition promised and speaks. Third member of the closure-prevention family (virtue, grief, guilt). Witch names a worn shape and never a person; no body, gender or biography is ever given. Filed 2026-09-27.

Angel (register rule, settled 2026-08-08)

  • Register: the word Angel appears only in the Codex and in overlay layers (currently church-space) — never in Archive voice. Lore, glossary and timeline pages do not use it: the Archive holds no classification and no file under the name, and this entry is a rule about the word, not an entry about a being.
  • What a source means by it: within the limits the record already keeps, a source writing angel can be referring to exactly two real kinds of thing. (1) A Levril — a founded Cascade being with genuine standing and agency, most often encountered on duty at enforcement, maintenance, or boundary interfaces; the being answers, as the founded do. (2) A messenger from another membrane — and here the record's limits bind hard: matter crosses only through a transient gravity tunnel, so a messenger in the literal sense is a bodily crosser at one of the rare documented sites, and the dream-and-vision channel carries no dispatch at all — an angel seen in a dream is, on the record's terms, not a messenger, because nothing sent it.
  • The source may be wrong, and the Codex may say so honestly. Valid-for-its-author covers a witness who names an Unfounded counterfeit an angel — the record's classifications for things that merely wear a founded shape are unchanged, and the one field test is unchanged too: the founded one can answer you.
  • Practice: prospective rule; the word currently appears nowhere in the corpus, so there is no migration to run. Devotional traditions keep their own vocabulary and are not obliged to adopt the Archive's — this rule governs the Archive's voice, not theirs. Archangel falls under this rule unchanged (settled 2026-09-18): it is the same word with a rank on it, the record has no instrument for rank inside another tradition's hierarchy, and it files nothing under the name and marks the absence rather than mapping the rank onto a Levril's.

Unclean spirit (register rule, settled 2026-09-18)

  • Register: the New Testament's unclean spirit is not an Archive word and appears only in the Codex and in overlay layers (currently church-space), as angel does. Demon now follows the same rule: the Archive used it in its own voice for one Class II mode until 2026-09-23, when that mode was renamed Overbearers (above). This entry is a rule about the scripture's two words, not an entry about a being.
  • What the tradition means by them: on the church-space tradition's own reading, its scripture's demon and unclean spirit are either figurative — which is the tradition's reading to make, and the record does not adjudicate it — or literal, and taken literally they refer to the Unfounded: the class, not the one mode the Archive calls Overbearers, since the scripture's word does not say which way the counterfeit runs.
  • Where the literal reading fits the record. Three findings line up. An Unfounded thing cannot be addressed, only countered by a clear question, a name and a refusal, and the gospel's pattern is a rebuke and a departure, never a negotiation — Be quiet, and come out of him! An Unfounded thing is not destroyed but starved, its structure borrowed against a host's purpose, and the spirit that passes through waterless places seeking rest, and doesn't find it and returns with seven others is the class as the record describes it: unfed without a host, recurring wherever a founded form can be counterfeited. And the class has no chief: by the prince of the demons is the accusers' phrase in the scripture, not the tradition's doctrine, and the answer it gets — a kingdom divided against itself cannot stand — is the record's own finding that the class has never been observed coordinating, put as a question.
  • Where lore supersedes. The adversary-in-chief. Mainstream tradition holds a single personal adversary; the record's position is The Borrowed Silhouette's, that the description cannot be satisfied, because such a being would have to be founded to command and Unfounded to be the adversary. The overlay yields on mechanism and keeps its promise, and the shape of the yielding is already on file in that paper's annotation: You have proven that he cannot be filed. We were not asking you to file him. The speaking spirits are the same yielding in small. The record's class sign is expression with nobody performing the reading, so a literal reading files I know who you are as counterfeit — the accurate shape, the absent membership — and reads the refusal to let them speak as the counter the field doctrine describes.
  • Practice: prospective for unclean spirit, which appears nowhere in Archive voice; demon was migrated on 2026-09-23, when its Class II use became Overbearers. Devotional traditions keep their own vocabulary and are not obliged to adopt the Archive's.

Canonical Terms: Dimensional Structure

The word Etheric was carrying three jobs at once — a causal layer, a set of spatial dimensions, and the separation between membranes. It keeps the first. The other two are named below. This split follows the same pattern as the Concordant zone-versus-mind resolution: where one term names both a place and a non-place, the place gets the new name.

Etheric

  • Layer: Ontological (Layer 3 of the Five Layers)
  • Definition: The rule-template causal mode governing what physical and material expressions can remain coherent. Archetypal templates constrain physical and material admissibility.
  • Notes: A causal mode, not a location, dimension, region, or plane. Nothing is inside the Etheric.
  • Register rule: Idiomatic spatial usage — roots reaching "into the Etheric layer," a structure "in the lower Etheric" — is working jargon and is not a migration target. It means into a mode of constraint. Which register is speaking decides whether looseness is a fault: chapters, characters, and Codex sources are voices, where imprecise field vocabulary is characterization and needs no correction; lore and glossary pages are the Archive, where the term is held to its definition and a page asserting the Etheric is a place has made a mistake. Same principle already applied to in-world "magic," and the reason the Overfold is not ranked below Etheric.
  • Do not use for: the compact dimensions; the Interval; membranes — in Archive voice. In a character's or Codex source's voice, imprecision here is theirs to have.

Compact Dimensions

  • Layer: Universe Structure (Local Dimensional Floor)
  • Definition: The spatial dimensions of a universe too tightly wound to be traversed or observed at Material scale. The home universe has seven, giving a floor of eleven: three extended, seven compact, one timelike.
  • Notes: Ordinary space, not a layer or realm — nothing lives in them and nothing is sent through them. Etheric rule-templates have geometric extent through a Concordant's compact dimensions, which is where a Layer 3 effect becomes measurable, not what Layer 3 is made of. The count is a local fact: another Worldwright can author a different split, which changes that universe's admissible particle and force spectrum.
  • Related Terms: Etheric, the Common Manifold, Grand Ensemble Multiverse

The Interval

  • Layer: Universe Structure (Inter-Membrane)
  • Definition: The separation between two adjacent cosmic membranes, measured across the Common Manifold rather than through either universe's own space.
  • Notes: A distance term, not a medium or a place — nothing is native to it, nothing travels through it under its own power, no vessel has been in one. Its one operationally significant property is that it varies: a boundary zone is a narrowed Interval, and Membrane Resonance, Intermembrane Bleed, Membrane Shadows and transient gravity tunnels are all consequences of that narrowing. What crosses is field structure, never matter — the sole exception being a transient gravity tunnel. A certified fold transit into a neighbouring membrane is not a second exception: a fold compresses the separation to adjacency and releases it, so nothing traverses a standing Interval.
  • Related Terms: Cosmic membrane, Intermembrane Bleed, Membrane Shadow, Photographic Being (the Shadow's bright, converging case; Survey Corps membrane caustic), Luminescent Ethereal Being (the Caomhari at a Conjunction window — a First Landing phrase kept as Filinesse is kept, not Archive voice, where the layer is Etheric), Boundary Zone

Boundary Types (settled 2026-09-23)

  • Definition: The grading of a boundary zone by how far two membranes have drawn together: Type I — Stable Gradient, Type II — Oscillatory Interface, Type III — Shear Event. Full treatment in Boundary Zones.
  • Naming rule: Type is for boundaries and Class is for beings. A bare Class II always means the meta-dimensional being class; a boundary is always Type II, never Class II. Formerly Boundary-State Class I–III, renamed because the two scales shared a word and pages used both.

The Common Manifold (post-11 manifold)

  • Layer: Cross-Universe Structure
  • Definition: The higher-order spacelike and timelike structure beyond any universe's own dimensional floor, governing cross-membrane coherence, causality buffering, and fold survivability. Every universe the record has ever reached is seated in it; the manifold is a Formwright's formtype, so the seating is formcluster-wide rather than Ensemble-wide, and a differently-woven formcluster (Wholecloth is the reported case) is seated otherwise.
  • Notes: Both names are canonical. "Post-11 manifold" is the Survey Corps working shorthand and stays correct in Corps usage and in-world voice; "Common Manifold" is the formal name. The shorthand is knowingly parochial — eleven is the home universe's floor, and analysts elsewhere would count from their own number and mean the same structure. Its bands (Dimensions 12–15 extended spacelike, 16–19 extended timelike, 20+ trans-concordant constraint field) are likewise numbered from the local floor.
  • Scope rule: A Concordant's compact dimensions carry its templates at home, inside its own membrane. The trans-concordant constraint field carries templates across the Interval to a neighbour. Same layer, two scopes; do not treat either as the geometric home of Etheric effects generally.
  • Related Terms: Compact Dimensions, the Interval, cosmic membrane

Cosmic Membrane

  • Layer: Universe Structure
  • Definition: The bounded region a single coherent universe occupies within the Common Manifold, with a fixed physics-plus-Etheric envelope. Membrane for short.
  • Coherence, not authorship (widened 2026-07-29): a membrane is what a universe occupies by virtue of being one — bounded, internally lawful, with an Interval to its neighbours. Origin is irrelevant to it. Worldwright-authored primaries, derivative universes produced by overlap or folding between primaries, and noögenically seeded universes that have stabilised their own Universal Authority all occupy membranes. The earlier wording said "a single primary universe," which was accurate to the only case then in view; taken literally it left a matured noögenic universe occupying nothing, despite having an inside, neighbours and a Council of its own. Do not reintroduce "primary" here.
  • Scale rule (settled 2026-07-26, phrasing tightened 2026-07-28): A membrane is universe-scale, not zone-scale — the bounded region one universe occupies, and never anything smaller. (Earlier wording read "a membrane is a universe," which states an identity where it means a scale, and sits awkwardly beside the definition above: a thing cannot both be X and occupy X.) A Concordant Zone is a region inside a membrane, and none of them is a membrane in its own right.
  • Zone count is deliberately unsettled (settled as unsettled, 2026-07-29). This line previously read "a universe holds many," while other entries read "very few" — but both are censuses, and no census is available. A zone spans the visible universe, so a handful of unbounded zones and endlessly many merely vast ones present identically to any observer inside either, and no instrument can be carried far enough to distinguish them. Canonical phrasing is local, not global: zones are sparse in every volume ever surveyed, and internal edges between them lie at least a horizon away from anywhere anyone has reached. That carries every operational consequence — unreachable edges, no posts on them — without committing the setting to a finite or an infinite universe. Reject both "a universe holds many" and "a universe holds very few" on sight; neither is knowable, and the rarity claims elsewhere depend only on the local reading.
  • "Spans the visible universe" is a lower bound, not a measurement — the horizon is the largest thing an instrument can be carried across, so it states the least a zone can be.

Flexure (coined 2026-07-29)

  • Layer: Universe Structure
  • Definition: A standing bend in a cosmic membrane's own higher-dimensional shape, carrying one patch of it toward a neighbouring membrane and narrowing the Interval over that patch alone. Flexures are what give inter-membrane boundary zones an address: the narrowing is local because the flexure is.
  • Not a fold, and the distinction is load-bearing. Higher-dimensional folding is engineered transit — scaffolded, transient, performed in its thousands, overwhelmingly inside a single Concordant with the rare certified route between membranes: the long-range FTL channel, a slow, preparation-heavy higher-dimensional drift. It is independent of quantum space harmonic wave, the separate medium-range channel (roughly a light-year a day); the two are not tiers of one system, and neither is a fallback for the other. A flexure is nobody's work, carries no traffic, and is not a route. The two share a shape and nothing else.
  • Why it was coined: the membrane-geometry sense was written as "fold" when boundary-zone localisation was first settled, including a cross-link pointing the geometry sense at the transit entry. That invites the two readings the record most firmly excludes — that a boundary zone could be manufactured, and that one could be flown to. Do not write "a fold in the membrane"; write "a flexure."

FTL Channel Scope (settled 2026-08-08)

  • Layer: Cross-Universe Structure
  • Definition: Each lawful FTL channel is defined at a specific tier of the Cosmic Cascade, and neither is an Ensemble-wide fact. Quantum space harmonics are specific to, and defined within, the local archecluster: the quantum kernel the wave rides is itself archecluster-scoped, and corridor admissibility is the cluster's finer vocabulary within it, drawn from the local Archewright's archetypes and possibility space. Fold transit is specific to, and defined within, the local formcluster: fold geometry is a property of the Common Manifold — the local Formwright's formtype, in which every membrane of the cluster is seated.
  • Notes: This is the deepest form of the two-channel independence rule: the channels share neither physics nor route map because they are not facts at the same tier. Scope states where a mechanism is defined, not where a transit is performed — a fold operation still runs inside a single universe, so the flexure entry's "inside a single Concordant" line stands unchanged. Outside its cluster a channel does not fail; it fails to refer: a neighbouring archecluster in the same formcluster folds by the local rules and need not admit harmonic corridors at all, and across a formcluster boundary there is no shared arena and no measured separation to fold.
  • The home membrane (settled 2026-09-12): carries no designation on the record. Archive voice writes the home membrane or this membrane; Survey usage is this universe. Every named membrane was named from here by the survey that reached it; nothing has named ours from outside, and no neighbour's name for it is recorded — the Caomhari have answered where only of their own country. Do not coin a designation. Where a tradition's or a species' name for it appears, file it translated beside the Archive's term, on the Kieme pattern of names side by side.
  • Related Terms: the Common Manifold, Archecluster, Formcluster, Flexure

Generalised Quantum Mechanics (settled 2026-08-08)

  • Layer: Physical, with lawful Etheric coupling
  • Definition: The one theory the cosmos's probability, coherence and information physics belongs to, in two registered parts. The quantum kernel is standard quantum mechanics preserved exactly — identical to real-universe quantum information within the local archecluster, with every laboratory no-go theorem intact. The Etheric extension is the lawful coupling structure laid over it: the Etheric texture on randomness, meaning-field overlays, the conceptual information channel, the boundary-zone decoherence channel, and the harmonic admissibility vocabulary corridor transit runs on.
  • Notes: The governing rule is extension, not deformation — couplings are added, permissions are not; no extension term signals faster than transit, edits an outcome, or amends a kernel rule. Where the extension vanishes (quiet, boundary-remote, unminded contexts) the full theory is the kernel as an exact restriction, which is what "identical at base" has always rested on. Scope follows the Cascade (see The Scope of Physical Law): kernel and extension vocabulary are both archecluster facts; the formalism itself is mathematics, scoped to the mathematical regime. Whether the local kernel is uniquely necessary or merely the local template is closed by structure, not by answer.
  • Do not use for: any claim that the Etheric layer breaks, overrides, or outranks quantum law — the frame exists to state the opposite.
  • Related Terms: FTL Channel Scope, The Scope of Physical Law, Archecluster, Formcluster, Etheric

The Scope of Physical Law (settled 2026-08-08)

  • Layer: Cross-cutting (all physics)
  • Definition: Every physical fact is scoped to one of six levels — the widest structure it is a fact about — and is stated at that level and no wider. Narrowest subject first: mediarch realm (one force-domain under one Mediarch, inside one universe: a force's lawful operation and particular reach); Concordant (a zone's coherence envelope and the local values of the Etheric extension terms); membrane (one universe: constants, compact-dimension split, particle and force spectrum); archecluster (the quantum kernel and harmonic admissibility); formcluster (Common Manifold seating, fold geometry, the Interval, commensurability); mathematical regime (the Metawright-settled axioms and what can be proved in them — the widest scope any lawful statement carries).
  • Notes: Deeper facts have wider scopes, and nothing physical is Ensemble-wide (universal in the whole-Multiverse sense — see Universal, below): past its scope a fact is not false but unformulable — a corridor chart in another archecluster fails to refer, a separation across formclusters cannot be measured, a proof carried between regimes arrives as an assertion. Above the regime stand the origin tiers, which are conditions of there being physics, not physics. In Archive voice an unscoped physics claim is ill-formed; chapters, characters and Codex sources speak loosely, per the standing register rule. Older filings' "everywhere" reads at the scope of its subject; the load-bearing instances (the calibrated second, the cavern constraint, the harmonic substrate) are restated at archecluster scope. Practical floor: transit runs inside a universe and cross-universe contact is boundary observation, so no instrument has ever operated outside the local archecluster — cluster-scoped facts and "confirmed by every measurement ever made" pick out the same set.
  • Registered vocabulary: mediarch realm — the jurisdiction of one Mediarch: a single force-domain inside a single universe. Mathematical regime — the axioms and foundations a Metawright settles, within which formclusters are instantiated.
  • Related Terms: Generalised Quantum Mechanics, FTL Channel Scope, Mediarchs, the Common Manifold, Archecluster, Formcluster

Plainmark / Compact Common Marking (settled 2026-08-11)

  • Layer: Standard (In-Universe, Material)
  • Canonical term: plainmark (lower case, one word) in all voices. The formal expansion Compact Common Marking appears only where a document is quoting the schedule itself; no character says it.
  • Definition: the Orbital Habitats Compact's non-alphabetic standard for marking infrastructure — stencilled panels of one to four stacked colour bands in fixed ground/figure pairs (black/ochre lozenges, hazard; slate-blue/white chevrons, the way; bone-white/black strokes and blocks, count; ochre/black rings, refuge), struck through by a diagonal bar when voided. It contains no letters, no numerals and no characters of any script.
  • Scope: Compact habitats and what the Compact certifies. It is not a universal notation, and writing it as one would reintroduce the convenience the record refuses. The Celtic Union letters its corridors in its members' own languages; other species mark by their own conventions; the Knarr Line keeps an older cousin answerable to nobody.
  • What a plainmark asserts: what kind of thing, which way, how many, and whether the promise still holds — and nothing else. It cannot name, has no verbs and no tenses, and its figure set is closed.
  • What it is evidence of: that somebody maintains that pressure boundary to the Compact's schedule. A recent, checkable maintenance claim, never a statement about language.
  • Related Terms: The Plainmark, Orbital Habitats Compact, What the Record Refuses, The Generation-Ark Era

Universal — Two Senses (settled 2026-08-08)

  • Register rule: the word universal carries exactly two lawful senses in Archive voice, and a sentence must make plain which it means — there is no third, vaguer sense left.
    1. Universe-wide — of one universe: membrane scope by another name. The standing example is a Universal Authority, whose writ ends at its own universe's edge; supra-universal is this sense negated, and stays correct.
    2. Ensemble-wide — of the whole Grand Ensemble Multiverse. This is the strong sense, and under The Scope of Physical Law no physical fact attains it: the widest physics scope is one mathematical regime, and the Ensemble holds many. Ensemble-wide statements survive only above physics — structural facts of the Cascade itself (Conceptual Conservation's "universal" reads in this sense).
  • Preferred forms: where ambiguity threatens, write universe-wide (or membrane-scoped) for sense 1 and Ensemble-wide for sense 2, and keep bare universal for contexts its sense is fixed in.
  • Proper names are names, not scope claims: Universal Authority (sense 1 by definition) and Universal Concord Standard Date (an institution's name; the standard's actual scope is the calibrated record) keep their words unchanged.
  • Older filings: read a bare universal at the sense its subject fixes — a governance office at sense 1, a Cascade-structural claim at sense 2, and a physics claim at neither: re-scope it per The Scope of Physical Law.
  • Related Terms: The Scope of Physical Law, Universal Authorities, Grand Ensemble Multiverse

Conceptual Conservation (settled 2026-07-29)

  • Layer: Conceptual (Layer 2)
  • Definition: No coherent mind is lost. An identity structure that once cohered remains an admissible concept state at the Conceptual layer; nothing deletes, degrades or overwrites one.
  • Conservation, not continuation. What persists is the structure, in the mode that layer holds — before embodiment. A conserved mind does not act, initiate or answer, the layer permitting no direct physical action without lower-layer coupling. Write retained, never survives, lives on or continues.
  • Unconditional and unranked. Conservation takes no account of depth, achievement or fertility, which is why noögenic seeding is not a form of salvation: a seed mind receives nothing that is not already true of every mind that ever cohered. Seeding is not how minds are kept, because minds are kept anyway. Do not write seeding as reward, continuation, or the survival of a person.
  • Access: direct reading of the Conceptual and Spiritual layers is a Cascade capability held by the higher strata — those reasoning in conceptual time rather than Material-layer time. Nothing at Material layer reads either directly; no instrument reaches them.
  • Not Kiemeic Translation (settled 2026-07-29). Distinct concept, distinct layer, and the pairing most likely to be conflated. Conservation is universal, unelected and structural, at the Conceptual layer. Kiemeic translation — what many traditions hold Kieme may elect after a being's death, carrying an essence into the Spiritual layer and choosing which aspects go — is discretionary, selective, not mediated through the Cascade, and invisible to the Physical and Material layers: untestable and unfalsifiable rather than merely unproven. Rewards and judgements attach to that concept and are devotional throughout. Never write conservation as elective, and never write translation as mechanism.
  • Eschatology is out of scope, not refuted. Claims about a singular event at the end of Material time — a general resurrection among them — are not invariants and cannot become ones, so invariant-only inference has nothing to say about them. Write the Archive as declining such claims on method grounds, never as denying them: translation is invisible by nature, whereas a general resurrection would be visible by definition, and the absence of a record is not offered as a finding. The Archive's own end-of-things register is entropic (Creative Entropy horizon, Threnos-Ω), never eschatological. Do not give the setting a last day, and do not have the Archive rule one out.
  • Register — soul and afterlife are devotional, not Archive, vocabulary. They are in wide and sincere use in-universe and are never used here for a mechanism; write Conceptual Conservation where a mechanism is meant. The Archive does not rule on what the devotional words name. Two accounts stand over one observable: the structures persist is what the record supports, you persist is a claim it neither makes nor is positioned to deny. Do not write the Archive as denying the soul; it declines the question, which is not the same thing and is the whole of the setting's posture here.
  • Universe vs membrane: the same object, differing in which way the sentence faces. Universe is the thing from inside — its contents and its governing authority. Membrane is that same object as the Common Manifold sees it: bounded, with neighbours and an Interval between. Inside-facing statements take universe; anything measured across takes membrane. Neither is a synonym for the other in Archive voice, and neither is ever zone-scale. One Worldwright authors many primary membranes — the unit of creation is the universe set, the unit of consistency is the zone. Earlier filings that read "each Concordant occupies its own membrane" are at the wrong scale; see the Migration Map.
  • Consequence: the Interval exists only between membranes. Two zones inside one universe are separated by an ordinary internal edge and no Interval at all, which is why an internal zone edge can produce instrument drift and lawful disagreement but never Intermembrane Bleed, a Membrane Shadow, or a transient gravity tunnel. Threshold Station's record therefore places it on an inter-universe boundary rather than an internal one.
  • Which kind "boundary zone" means (settled 2026-07-29): unqualified, it means the inter-membrane kind — a local narrowing of the Interval where a flexure carries a patch of one membrane toward its neighbour. That is the only kind anything has ever been stationed at, and every Survey Corps post on the books sits on one. The intra-universe kind — an internal edge between two Concordant Zones — remains a sound category and is not a destination: a zone spans the visible universe, so the edge between two of them lies beyond any horizon an instrument could be carried to. Operational filings describing crews, sensor webs or short-baseline timebase mismatch "at the edge of two Concordants" are using the loose phrasing of their period; they describe real work at the inter-membrane kind.
  • Grand Demiurge (retired 2026-08-02): the former legacy name for Conseleme. Retired because a demiurge is a character with intentions — exactly what the tier's own non-anthropomorphic definition rules out — and because the term carries old-Earth speculative baggage no reading of Conseleme supports. The devotional name is now the Everlasting Ground, which is older in-universe and consistent with the tier's role: what any mathematics and any time must satisfy. Pre-retirement filings carry the old name correctly and are read as written; do not use it in new writing.
  • Third legacy sense of Concordant (retired 2026-07-29): older filings also use Concordant for a whole universe, distinct from both the zone sense and the deprecated governance sense. It survives chiefly in overlap-and-folding material — "adjacent Concordants share a measurable interaction domain," "activity from the other Concordant" — where the parties are membranes, since overlap requires an Interval and two zones of one universe have none between them. Canonical replacement: universe or membrane, by which way the sentence faces.
  • Notes: "Brane" in older Survey Corps literature is the same term, retired for being misheard as "brain" over a comm channel. Two similar membranes are convergent design or coincidence, never branches of one timeline.

Glossary Additions: Post-Death Mind States

Substrate Collapse

  • Layer: Physical / Transition
  • Definition: The failure or termination of a mind’s originating physical or computational substrate (e.g., biological death or system shutdown).
  • Role in System: Initiates the transition from substrate-bound cognition to information-state evaluation.

Incursives (settled 2026-08-21)

Canonical: Incursive / Incursives, formally Non-Sapient Incursives, for the Class III meta-dimensional beings — non-sapient, predatory or entropic, entering Material space opportunistically through boundary instability.

Retired: Shadow Being(s). Renamed on Dermot's direction because it collided with Membrane Shadows, and the collision was live rather than theoretical: two pages carried explicit "not to be confused with" warnings, and membrane-shadows.md recorded that the two were "routinely misfiled" together.

Why this term and not another. The discriminator against a Membrane Shadow is not shadow-ness but entry — a Class III being has physically arrived and can be touched, where a Membrane Shadow is a gravitational imprint with nothing present at all. Incursive names exactly that, so a Membrane Shadow is not an incursive because nothing incurred, and the old warnings become almost unnecessary rather than merely relocated. That is the test a rename should pass.

Why the other side was not renamed. Membrane Shadow is the more entrenched of the two: 15 files against 6, with its own lore entry, its own glossary entry, a journal entry, and rows in this guide. Renaming the smaller surface is the cheaper change and the one less likely to strand a reader.

The Told (coined 2026-09-06, from inside)

Canonical: the Told — the Pandoids' own name for themselves, rendered in the record's translation register, established by the Below the Roof thread (S11E01C02) and registered at the glossary. Their personal names are tellings on the same pattern: the first true thing said of a person that others went on repeating (Stone-First, Carried-It-Sleeping), rendered in translation with hyphens.

Not retired: Pandoid. The survey's coinage stays the name in every filing, because the survey has not been told otherwise; the two names belong to two sides of one encounter, and the record keeps both, marked. No phonetic form is held for either the people's name or any person's, and none should be invented: the thread is a telling rendered, not a transcription. The record's they for an individual Pandoid stays the translation default, not a claim about a pronoun system of their own.

Terminology Migration Map (Legacy → Canonical)

Legacy / Ambiguous Usage Canonical Term Migration Rule
“The False Dragon” (as a title or a label for the adversary) The Borrowed Silhouette (the paper); “the adversary of the devotional codices” (the thing) Retitled 2026-08-21. The paper is unchanged and its doctrinal formulation — that such a being would be a false dragon, not an actual one — still stands in the body, where false is the word doing the work. What was retired is the title and the bare label, which put dragon beside the adversary in indexes and glossary lines and so worked against the argument they introduced. Old URL 301s.
“The Kingdom of the Four Islands” (the Archive’s first rendering of the Kingdom’s name) The Kingdom of the Five Islands Re-filed 2026-09-19. The Kingdom’s name in its own language is a count of islands; the delegation’s first summary counted the four the Crown holds, and the Long Accounting’s charter-era entries count five. Both counts stand in the Kingdom’s own two records and the Archive files under the written one, first rendering kept beside it and dated, per the archival rule. The Four Islands remains correct as the court’s own count and in dated documents that used the first rendering; in Archive voice the realm is the Five Islands. Old URL redirects.
“Shadow Being(s)” / “Non-Sapient Shadow Beings” / “Class III shadow beings” Incursive(s) / Non-Sapient Incursives Renamed 2026-08-21. A pure rename with no change of meaning, class, or property — Class III membership, non-sapience and behaviour are all unchanged. Adopted to end the collision with Membrane Shadows, which are not incursives and never were: nothing has entered material space to produce one.
“Archewright-created universe(s)” Worldwright-created primary universe set(s) Replace direct creation language; keep Archewrights as archetype/possibility authors.
“High Celestials” (coordination/jurisdiction context) Telearchs The commoner sense of the retired term.
“higher celestials” (force/law governance context) Mediarchs The force-governing sense of the retired term. If context cannot disambiguate, flag rather than guess. Note this term has now been migrated twice: “higher celestials” → Dynarch → Mediarch, and the destination is the current name.
“Starwarden First Officer” / “Starwarden First Class” / “Executive Starwarden First Class” (present-day usage) Archwarden Restyled 2833 UCSD. A rank retitling with no change of seniority, duties or position — above Starwarden, below Line Captain, a vessel's second-in-command throughout. The Archive's narration says Archwarden in every period (amended 2026-09-29); a pre-2833 document quoted as written keeps the older style, and the date, not the style, decides whether a quoted usage is correct. Unlike Dynarch → Mediarch, this is an institution renaming its own rank rather than the Archive correcting its own vocabulary, so the old styles stay correct for their period instead of naming nothing.
“Dynarch” / “Dynarchs” Mediarch / Mediarchs Retired 2026-07-29. A pure rename with no change of meaning, rank, or property — every statement filed about a Dynarch stands unaltered about a Mediarch, so migrate on sight and do not reopen the substance. Dynamis named the tier for the forces, which are the Worldwright's design and the one thing the tier cannot alter; medius names the mediating office the 2026-07-26 proxy settlement established. Unlike the Concordant senses, nothing is left behind holding the old word: Dynarch now names nothing. No in-universe register keeps it — devotional and provincial records use Exarch, which is unaffected and stays canonical — so there is no quoted-as-written exception here of the kind the Solar System Concord row carries.
“Concordant” (governance-intelligence sense) Universal Authority Reserve “Concordant” / “Concordant Zone” for the bounded region; name the universe-level governance mind a Universal Authority.
“Concordants above universes” Universal Authorities within universes Reframe the governance offices as in-universe Universal Authorities; they are not supra-universal.
“Plural Concordant” / “Concordant Plurality” Plural Universal Authority Same rename applied to the plural-ascension pathway.
“megaexpanse” / “coherent cosmic region” in Archive voice Concordant Zone Not deprecations — both are live words with declared registers (popular and Survey-Corps-plain respectively). Migrate only when the Archive itself is speaking; leave them standing in dialogue, popular sources, and first-mention glosses.
“Solar System Concordant” (present-day usage) Solar System Concord Restyled 2790 UCSD. Pre-2790 documents keep the founding name and are quoted as written — the 2723 charter preamble is the standing example; the date, not the spelling, decides.
“Concordant-wide” / “the Concordant period” / “the Concordant” (civil or civilizational sense) Concord-wide / the Concord period / the Concord The compact and the era it names both follow the 2790 restyling. Reserve Concordant for the cosmological zone alone.
“Concordant-equivalent governance” (protouniverse) independent Universal Authority A protouniverse leaves parental Telearch jurisdiction when it stabilizes its own Universal Authority.
“Dragon-class monster” Dragon (low-ranking Levril) Reclassify from monster taxonomy to Levril subclass.
“Boundary-State Class I / II / III”, or a bare “Class I / II / III” for a boundary Type I / II / III (Boundary Types) Renamed 2026-09-23. A pure rename with no change of meaning: Class now means only the being classes. The Class I Fold-Proximate Research Platform designation is a facility rating, not a boundary, and keeps its word.
“Court-Fae” Obligers (an Obliger) Renamed 2026-09-23. A pure rename with no change of meaning. Court claimed a hierarchy the Unfounded cannot have, and fae collided with the Union's name for the Caomhari. Old URL 301s. Published prose where a character chooses the word Court-Fae stands as that character's word; official language (canon_facts, formal classifications, doctrine) says Obligers.
“the Good People” / “Elves” (Archive voice) Caomhari Named 2026-09-23. The Good People stays as the Celtic Union's word and elves as off-world speech, both quoted, never adopted.
“Demon(s)” (the Class II mode, Archive voice) Overbearer(s) Renamed 2026-09-23. A pure rename with no change of meaning: the confrontational predators that feed through intimidation and forced submission. The old word brought a devil-in-chief, a moral cosmology and a kind of being, all of which the record refuses. Demon stays in devotional voice, where it means the whole Unfounded class; quote it there as written.
“Meta-dragon(s)” Meta-Levril(s) Renamed 2026-09-23. A pure rename with no change of meaning: the Concordant-span property, independent of rank. The old word gave dragon a meaning that cut across the rank it names.
“dragon(s)” for every Levril, or “dragons and kin” (Archive voice) Levril(s); Dragon for the lower rank only Ruled 2026-09-23. Witness speech that calls a Levril a dragon is quoted as written.
“Beautiful monster” (unqualified) Beautiful Monster (named Class II type) or the collective nickname for Obligers/Gilded Saints/Cute Predators (see Predatory Entities) Ambiguous on its own; qualify with specific-type or collective-nickname context on first use.
“Single-seed-only ascension model” Includes plural ascension pathways Add Plural Convergence / Synarch thresholds where applicable.
“Unified singular governance mind only” Plural Universal Authority / Synarch Mind options Permit distributed cognition with Consensus Field decisioning.
“Etheric dimensions” / “invisible Etheric space” Compact dimensions The seven-dimension sense of Etheric is retired. Reserve Etheric for the Layer 3 causal mode; name the dimensions themselves compact.
“Etheric” (spatial/region sense — a place reached into or contained in) Compact dimensions or the Interval, per context Decide which is meant: geometric extent inside one membrane → compact dimensions; separation between membranes → the Interval. Idiomatic “into the Etheric layer” is not migrated — it means into a mode of constraint and stays.
“manifold distance” / “membrane separation” / “the membrane gap” the Interval Name the separation rather than describing it. A boundary zone is a narrowed Interval.
“Post-11 Dimensional Manifold” (as the formal name) the Common Manifold Not a deprecation: post-11 manifold remains canonical Survey Corps shorthand and correct in-world voice. Use Common Manifold where the formal name is wanted, and where the home universe's floor of eleven should not be assumed.
“brane” cosmic membrane (membrane) Already migrated in-world; retained only as older Survey Corps literature quoted in character.
“Archon” / “Council of Archons” (Threnos-Ω records) Harmonarch / Council of Harmonarchs Not a deprecation. Archon is Threnos-Ω's own native word for the office and stays in that universe's records. Read it as Harmonarch; do not carry it into Solar System or Cascade-general usage, where the word names nothing. Separately-authored universes are not required to share vocabulary.
“Universal Authority” as a singular mind above the Principals the Council of Harmonarchs plus its presiding seat The Authority is the Principals in council, not a fourth being over them. Rephrase "answers to the Authority" as answering to the council it sits in.
“each Concordant occupies its own membrane” / membrane used at zone scale a membrane is universe-scale — the region one universe occupies; a Concordant Zone is a region inside one Scale correction, not a rename. Reread any passage where a zone is said to have a membrane, sit on one, or face another across an Interval. One Worldwright authors many primary membranes.
“Meridian” (Orbital Habitats Compact member habitat) Halcyon Renamed 2026-08-31. A pure rename with no change of fact — the habitat, its Commissioner post, and the Season 2 itinerary all stand unaltered under the new name. Adopted to end an accidental collision with Meridian, the Halyx System world, which keeps the name; in present usage the word names only that world.
“the region a primary universe occupies” as the membrane definition “the region a coherent universe occupies” — origin is not part of the definition Widened 2026-07-29. The narrow wording excluded noögenically seeded universes, which have insides, neighbours and Councils of their own once stabilised. Worldwright authorship still distinguishes primary from other universes; it just does not decide who gets a membrane.
“boundary zone” (unqualified, in a bleed/shadow/tunnel context) inter-membrane boundary zone Two mechanisms share the name. Only Interval narrowing between universes produces Intermembrane Bleed, Membrane Shadows or gravity tunnels; an internal edge between two zones of one universe gives drift and lawful disagreement only. Qualify on first use wherever the distinction is load-bearing.
“every universe in the Grand Ensemble is seated in the Common Manifold” / the manifold as Ensemble-wide every universe the record has reached — seating is formcluster-scoped Scope correction, not a rename. The manifold is a Formwright's formtype (settled 2026-08-01), so Common records the record's reach, not a census of the Ensemble. A differently-woven formcluster (Wholecloth) is seated otherwise and known by report only.
“a fold operation runs inside one universe” / “cross-universe contact is boundary observation, not travel” fold transit is formcluster-scoped — overwhelmingly intra-universe, plus the rare certified route between membranes Scope correction, not a rename. A fold crosses no standing Interval — the separation is compressed to adjacency and released, nothing traverses a gap — so the band rule (matter has no trans-Interval reach) stands unchanged beside the certified routes into Deadwater and Counterpane.
“cross-Concordant coherence” (in the Common Manifold's definition formula) cross-membrane coherence Scale correction, not a rename — the same correction as the zone-scale membrane row, caught in the one formula it had survived in. The manifold's work is inter-membrane; two zones share no Interval, so “cross-Concordant” in the inter-universe sense misstates the scale. Telearch continuity and Levril coordination keep “cross-Concordant” in its zone sense, and the registered band name trans-concordant constraint field is a name, like post-11, and stays.

Deprecation & Writing Policy

  • Use canonical terms in all new pages.
  • Legacy terms may appear only in historical quotations, with inline clarification on first use.
  • For renamed concepts, prefer: Canonical Term (formerly Legacy Term) at first mention in migrated pages.
