Meta-Dimensional Beings: Classification
A boundary sensor can register the breach before anyone sees a face, claw, or shadow. Classification begins there, with structure first and fear second.
Meta-dimensional beings are entities whose existence extends across spatial dimensions above the four accessible to Material-layer beings. They enter or interact with Material space through boundary zones, overlap windows, and fold-proximate events.
Meta-dimensional existence is not rare. What matters is its stratification. Not all meta-dimensional beings are sapient, and not all sapient meta-dimensional beings hold Cascade standing.
Classification
Class I — Levrils (Sapient, Cascade-Ranked)
The only meta-dimensional beings with formal standing in the Cosmic Cascade. Sapient, constrained by hierarchy, and capable of lawful interaction with Material-layer beings through constraint literacy and Champions selection.
Levrils mark the upper limit of what Material-layer beings can negotiate with. Below this class, power may still speak, but it does not speak under lawful standing.

On the names below. Obligers, Gilded Saints, Overbearers, Beautiful Monsters, Threnes, Cute Predators — these are Unfounded, and the names are modes of failure rather than kinds. Nothing filed under these names exists by design, so there is no decision for a category to record; what a name records is how the counterfeit runs. The list is the Archive's record so far, not a census, and it cannot be completed: modes nobody has surveyed exist unnamed, and the Unfounded hold no pattern steady enough to count (see Unfounded). Class II and III are not Unfounded by definition: the Caomhari are founded, native to their own universe, and sit in Class II by how they present, not by origin (see Founded neighbours below). The Class II / Class III split itself does survive that, because sapience is an observed capability and an operational fact, not a claim about design. Class I is different in kind: Levrils are founded, and Higher Levril and Dragon are real subclasses of a real tier.
Class II — Sapient, Without Cascade Standing
Beings met as meta-dimensional that have a degree of sapience — goal-directed, adaptive, capable of learning and strategy — but no Cascade standing. They are not bound by Cascade constraints and not protected by them. The class holds two groups that share those two facts and almost nothing else.
The Unfounded (sapient monsters)
Meta-dimensional in origin, founded by nothing, and predatory. Their sapience makes them more dangerous than incursives because they learn, adjust, and exploit. Sapient monsters cannot perform functions reserved for Cascade-ranked entities, and they have no legitimate authority at any tier. The names below are the modes the Archive has met, not a census (see above).
Examples:
- Overbearers — Confrontational predators. Feed through intimidation and forced submission rather than deception. A formalization of the beings that universe-overlap doctrine names first among those arising from overlap distortions. Filed as Demons until 2026-09-23.
- Beautiful Monsters — Desire-extractors. Feed on vanity and attraction, manifesting as objects of desire or awe to draw victims into dependency. Not to be confused with the informal "beautiful monsters" nickname applied to this whole predator group (see Predatory Entities).
- Obligers — Conceptual↔Etheric predators. Feed on ambiguity, desire loops, and social debt. Adaptive and strategic; the entity at the Marsh Causeway learned from each of Elvira's failed rituals and adjusted its feeding condition accordingly. Sapient enough to maintain a deception across multiple encounters.
- Gilded Saints — Virtue-extractors. Feed on moral labour, sanctified suffering, and closure-prevention. Sapient enough to identify and sustain the specific emotional conditions they require. Present as worthy causes or sacred duties.
- Threnes — Grief-extractors. Feed on unresolved mourning, prolonging loss rather than allowing it to resolve — a closure-prevention pattern keyed to grief rather than virtue.
- Ghost-Witches — Guilt-extractors. Feed on unpaid guilt and the will to pay it: present as the returned dead with a grievance and a remedy, the figure every tradition keeps of the one who comes back knowing and can be settled for a price — and the price is amends that are never quite the right amends, so the debt renews. A closure-prevention pattern keyed to guilt, beside the Gilded Saint's virtue and the Threne's grief. The tell is the record's own: a Membrane Shadow, the real thing behind every ghost story, never speaks, and a ghost-witch does nothing but — fluently, and to a debtor it is not listening to. The founded dead do not come back to be paid; nobody is in there to be paid. The shape is worn, never a person: no body, no gender, no biography. Filed 2026-09-27.
Founded neighbours
Not meta-dimensional in origin, and filed here because they appear so. A meta-dimensional being has no from: it extends across higher spatial dimensions rather than living in a universe next door (Umbral Moon). A founded neighbour has one. It is native to an adjacent universe under its own Worldwright, and it presents as meta-dimensional because its influence reaches across the membrane: as an imprint, as an image, or in a body through a transient gravity tunnel. Witnesses and instruments meet the presentation and not the origin, which is why the Archive files them in this class. The filing records what is met; it makes no claim about what they are at home.
- Caomhari — the beings of Tír Tairngire, the Celtic Union's Good People. No confirmed feeding signature in any recorded encounter; the clearest case that a Class II being need not be a predator.
- The crossers at Sí Gaoithe — an unsettled case. They resist clean Class II/III sorting altogether, and whether they are neighbours at all is not established; see that entry for why sapient and monster are not the same claim.
Class III — Non-Sapient Incursives
Meta-dimensional beings with no sapience. Predatory, entropic, or ecologically disruptive. They enter Material space opportunistically through boundary instability and do not pursue goals beyond immediate feeding or expansion.
They are not intelligent, but they are not inert. A boundary collapse event can introduce large non-sapient incursives that cause significant material damage simply by displacing local physics through their presence.
Examples:
- Cute Predators (tickle bugs, lamb-masks) — operate at the micro-scale of consent erosion. No evidence of goal-directed sapience; their behaviour is instinctive pattern-matching against vulnerability signals.
- Larger incursives — documented at Type III boundary collapse events; no communication, no negotiation, no Cascade standing.
Not every shadow-shaped anomaly belongs on this list. A Membrane Shadow presents the same way — dark, roughly person- or creature-shaped, seen at a boundary zone — but nothing has entered material space to produce it. It is a gravitational imprint leaking across a narrowed cosmic-membrane gap from a mass that stays entirely in its own Concordant, not a being of any class. It falls outside this classification altogether, not at the bottom of it.
Entry Conditions
Meta-dimensional beings enter Material space through:
- Boundary zones — the most common entry point; Type II/III instability at Concordant edges allows ingress.
- Universe overlap windows — temporary coexistence periods permit partial dimensional extension into Material space.
- Fold-proximate instability — unauthorised or degraded fold operations can open ingress corridors.
Levrils (Class I) translate into Material space through lawful dimensional channels and produce measurable instrument effects on entry. Class II and III beings usually enter without lawful channel use and do not always leave the same clean signature.
Detection
- Class I (Levrils): Instrument anomalies consistent with extra-dimensional field intrusion. Clean signature. Identifiable by trained observers.
- Class II (the Unfounded): Etheric-layer disturbance in the Conceptual↔Etheric band. Detectable by constraint-literate practitioners. Rook-7's sensor arrays detect feeding-condition asymmetries that correlate with Class II presence.
- Class III (Non-sapient): Boundary-state escalation and local physics disagreement. Physical instruments can detect precursor conditions. Animals and cyber-enhanced beings often react before instruments register.
Cascade Standing and Authority
Only Class I beings (Levrils) have Cascade standing. This means:
- They can be negotiated with under Cascade-governed terms.
- Their interventions are lawful and leave a traceable causal record.
- They can select Champions and mentor in constraint literacy.
Class II and III beings have no Cascade authority. Treating a sapient monster as though it holds Cascade standing is a category error with operational consequences.
