Unfounded
In Union Irish: Na Neamhbhunaithe — the unfounded, those without a foundation
Cosmology
The Unfounded is the Survey Archive's collective term for the predatory pattern-entities — the overbearers, threnes and beautiful monsters of the sapient classes, and the cute predators below them. The word is a finding, not an insult: they are patterns the Conceptual layer conserves that no origin condition underwrites. Recorded at Layer 2, denied Layer 1 — real enough to catalogue, and grounded in nothing.
An Unfounded thing can be classified, tracked, and countered. It cannot be addressed, because there is nobody in there to address; every attempt in the record to negotiate with one has failed the same way, not refused but unanswered. And it cannot be destroyed in the ordinary sense, only starved: its structure is borrowed against a host's purpose, and when the purpose goes it stops being instantiated — the mechanism the Cosmic Limitation on Evil describes from the doctrinal side.
The plainest figure the record has for the class is deadwood. Dead wood on a living tree keeps the tree's shape exactly — the branch stands where a branch would stand, and from any distance it is a branch — and nothing supplies it. It is not fought. It is shed, or pruned, and what the tree loses in the shedding is nothing that was the tree. Each clause is one of the findings above put in a gardener's words: the accurate shape, the absent membership, the structure that borrows and is not fed, the ending by starvation rather than defeat, and the observation the countermeasures rest on, that a thing supplied by nothing does not bear weight — press it with a clear question, a name, a refusal, and it goes. The figure has one edge, and the record keeps it: dead wood was once the tree's own wood, and no Unfounded thing was ever founded. The figure describes how the class stands to what it counterfeits, never where it came from. The gardener's other half — that the pruning is for the growth to come — is the Limitation's claim in a gardener's words, and the record registers it as it registers the Limitation: a purpose that may be claimed, and is not specified.
What marks an Unfounded thing is counterfeit. Each named mode wears the shape of something founded — a person, a companion animal, an object of desire, a grief that deserves comfort, the dead with something to say — without being a member of that kind. The shape is accurate. The membership is not. This is why animals detect them more reliably than instruments or people do: the counterfeit is aimed at the social registers, and a creature that declines without needing a reason is reading the membership rather than the shape.
False empathy is characteristic of the class. Empathy is intuition coupled with high sensitivity — a reading, made by somebody, of somebody. An Unfounded thing produces empathy's expressions with nothing performing the reading: solicitude that does not track its object, comfort that arrives fluent and off by one, warmth pitched at where you were standing a moment ago. The counterfeit is often superb, because expressions can be learned from the outside; what cannot be learned from the outside is the perceiving. So the tell is never the performance but the tracking: real empathy updates — it follows a hesitation, notices a correction, changes when you change — and Unfounded warmth plays on, beautifully, to a listener it is not listening to. Field doctrine accordingly treats attentive warmth that fails to update as a class sign. Note the boundary the doctrine keeps: a person can feign empathy, and the civil record is full of it — but that is a choice made by somebody founded, and a choice can be repented. The Unfounded do not feign, because feigning implies an alternative. Their empathy is false the way the sand-house's foundation is absent: not withheld — unavailable. The performance is all there is.
The names are modes of failure, not kinds. Overbearer, threne, beautiful monster, cute predator — none of these denotes a category the way a species or a Cascade tier does, because nothing here exists by design. A founded thing is created and defined by the strata above it, and that is what gives a kind its membership: something decided what it would be. The Unfounded are underwritten by no origin condition at all, so there is no decision for a category to record. What the names record instead is how the counterfeit runs — which shape it wears, and what it feeds on.
Four consequences the record has had to absorb, all of which follow from there being no kind underneath the name:
- Two things filed under one name need have nothing else in common. The name is a description of a failure, and failures resemble each other without being related.
- Nothing is obliged to stay what it was filed as. An entity presenting in one mode and later in another has not transformed, because there was no kind to depart from. The Archive treats a reclassification as a correction to the file rather than an event in the world.
- The counters are matched to modes, not to kinds. This is why the countermeasures look unrelated to each other — a clear question insisted upon, naming and closure, asymmetry detection. They are not weapons against three species. They are three ways of refusing three ways of failing.
- The list is not closed, and cannot be. The names are the modes the Archive has met and filed, not an inventory of what exists. A mode nobody has surveyed has no name yet and is no less present for it. And because the Unfounded are transient and unordered, with no kind to hold a pattern steady, a complete classification is not merely unfinished but unavailable: there is nothing for a census to count twice. A report that fits no name is filed as what the thing was seen to do, and stays unnamed until a second report resembles it; resemblance, as above, is not relation.
The sapient/non-sapient split (Class II and Class III) survives this and is doing different work: it records what a given pattern is observed to be capable of, which is a real and operationally load-bearing difference. It is a description of behaviour, not evidence of design, and the Archive keeps it for the same reason it keeps any other measurement.
The class has no chief, and could not have one. Devotional codices in several traditions describe a single personal adversary; the Archive holds no file on such a being, and the reason is categorical rather than evidential. Command needs somebody to issue it, and the class sign here is that nothing performs the reading. Command needs something to obey it, and the Unfounded are a failure mode rather than a faction — they recur independently wherever a founded form can be counterfeited, and have never been observed coordinating with one another. And command needs answerability, which is the one line this glossary already turns on: the founded one can answer you.
Put at its shortest, such a being would have to be founded in order to command, and Unfounded in order to be the adversary — and it cannot be both. The category is not empty pending discovery. It is not a category. Nor is it an archetype: an archetype is a vocabulary an Archewright drew from, a fact of authorship, and nothing authored this. The Unfounded wear the archetypes of what they counterfeit — a person's, a companion animal's, a grief's — and the adversary-figure wears a Levril's; none of them has one of its own. See The Borrowed Silhouette for the Doctrinal Division's filing, and What the Record Refuses for the standing position it sits under: the setting's predators are ecology, not theology.
The term deliberately does not cover Levrils, dragons included, nor any Cascade tier: those are founded — created and defined by the strata above them, with genuine standing and genuine agency. A dangerous founded being and an Unfounded pattern can look alike from inside an encounter. The Archive's file on telling them apart is short and unsatisfying: the founded one can answer you.
Devotional traditions keep their own vocabulary for these classes and are not obliged to adopt the Archive's; see the codex record for readings the Archive registers without endorsing. One such reading is registered beside the rule for angel in the canonical guide: the church-space tradition reads its own scripture's demon and unclean spirit as figurative or, taken literally, as this class — the whole class, whichever mode the counterfeit runs in — and yields to the record on the one point where the two part, the adversary-in-chief.
