Levril

Levril is the formal name for the whole tier. Common speech calls every Levril a dragon; in the record Dragon is the lower rank only, and the loose use comes from the fact that Dragons are the Levrils people see. Levrils are sapient meta-dimensional beings — their existence extends across extra higher spatial dimensions beyond the four accessible to Material-layer beings — and they are the only meta-dimensional entities with formal standing in the Cosmic Cascade.

Not all meta-dimensional beings are Levrils. Sapient monsters such as Obligers and Gilded Saints are also meta-dimensional, but they have no Cascade standing. Non-sapient incursives are similarly meta-dimensional but sub-Levril in causal authority.

Levrils sit below Celestials (Frenar) and above Champions/Heroes in the fixed Cascade hierarchy.

Meta-Levrils are a subset of Levrils whose higher-dimensional extension spans more than one Concordant simultaneously, at a coherence cost.

Levrils select Champions from sentient material beings — organic or artificial — based on constraint literacy and causal relevance. This selection is a bounded, lawful assessment, not supernatural favour.

Levrils may also choose to mentor mortals in constraint literacy. This is the closest thing to "teaching magic" that occurs in the Grand Ensemble Multiverse, and it is emphatically not magic.

Example: A Levril does not need to test a candidate directly to select them as a Champion. Observing sustained, competent action under constraint — the kind of pattern a seasoned survey team lead displays across repeated boundary-station postings — is itself sufficient evidence of the causal relevance a Levril looks for.

Levril divides into two subclasses — Higher Levrils and Dragons — both holding full Cascade standing. Overbearers, Beautiful Monsters, and Threnes are separately named meta-dimensional beings ranked below Celestials, but they are not Levrils and hold no Cascade standing; they are Class II Sapient Monsters, alongside Obligers and Gilded Saints.
