Constraint Literacy

In Union Irish: Litearthacht Srianta — literacy in constraints; srian is also a bridle

Constraint literacy is the developed ability to read the Etheric structures that express through the physical world — to understand the rules of one's current layer and to work with those rules rather than against them.

It is not magic. It does not allow a practitioner to override physical laws or Concordant-level constraints. It allows a practitioner to know which actions are coherent with the current Etheric structure and which will be rejected — the way a skilled builder knows the grain of the wood before cutting.

Levrils occasionally mentor mortals in constraint literacy, though their teaching is typically indirect. The curriculum is defined by the student's current situation, not by any formal syllabus.

Elvira's boundary practice is a self-taught approximation. She has developed the vocabulary and the observational methods, but without the deeper Etheric literacy that would allow her to predict rather than react.

Example: A Levril-trained practitioner can sense that a proposed action will be rejected by the local Etheric structure before attempting it. Elvira, working from self-taught observation rather than direct mentorship, must instead try the action and read the failure afterward — competent, but reactive rather than predictive.
