Etheric
In Union Irish: Éitreach — etheric, of the éitear
Cosmology
The Etheric is Layer 3 of the Five Layers of Reality — the rule-template layer that governs what physical and material expressions can remain coherent.
Its mechanism is structural: archetypal templates constrain physical and material admissibility. They define what kinds of things can persist and cohere, not the specific events that occur within those boundaries.
Constraints:
- Etheric templates cannot contradict Cascade hierarchy constraints.
- No Etheric effect is supernatural: every cross-layer transfer requires lawful coupling.
Observable effects:
- Persisting pattern behaviour after local physical triggers are removed.
- Archetypal interference events during high-coherence stress.
- Boundary zones produce Etheric divergence as well as physical divergence.
Example: Elvira's boundary work applies the Etheric layer directly: chalk lines and threaded knots do nothing on their own, but they mark and stabilise Etheric templates already present, letting a physical structure hold a shape the underlying pattern would otherwise let drift.
What the Etheric Is Not
The word has historically been asked to carry more than one job, and two of them have since been given their own names. The Etheric is a causal mode — one of five ways an event can be caused — and not a location, a dimension, or a region anything can be inside.
- It is not the seven compact dimensions. Those are ordinary space, part of the home universe's dimensional floor. Etheric templates have geometric extent through them, which is where a Layer 3 effect becomes measurable; that is not the same as the layer being made of them.
- It is not the gap between two cosmic membranes. That is the Interval, and its narrowing is what produces Intermembrane Bleed — an Etheric signature, carried across the Interval by the trans-concordant constraint field.
Working Jargon and the Archive Voice
Longstanding Survey Corps and boundary-practitioner usage speaks of structures reaching "into the Etheric layer" — dryadic root systems most often — or of a thing sitting "in the lower Etheric." That phrasing is idiomatic and correct. What reaches in reaches into a mode of constraint, not down into a lower storey of space; the spatial grammar is how practitioners talk, not a claim about what is there.
Which register is speaking decides whether the looseness is a fault. The two are held to different standards, and the distinction is worth keeping straight:
- Chapters, characters, and Codex sources are voices. Field vocabulary that is slightly wrong and completely functional is what working jargon looks like everywhere, and a Survey Corps analyst is a practitioner rather than a theorist. Imprecision here is characterization, not error, and needs no correction.
- Lore and glossary pages are the Archive stating settled fact. Here the term is held to its definition: the Etheric is a causal mode, and a page that asserts it is a place, a dimension, or a region has made a mistake rather than adopted a voice.
This is the same principle the setting already applies to "magic" — a real word for a real phenomenon, spoken by people who have not correctly modelled it, and never a narration-level claim. It is also why the Overfold is not treated as a lesser name than Etheric: "None of the three is more 'real' than the others."
