Intermembrane Bleed

In Union Irish: Úscadh Idirsheicne — seepage between membranes

Intermembrane Bleed is the Survey Corps' technical term for what boundary-zone workers used to just call "Etheric effects" — the measurable intrusion of one universe's archetypal templates into an adjacent one, carried through the trans-concordant constraint field described in the The Common Manifold.

Each primary universe sits on its own bounded cosmic membrane within that manifold; a Concordant Zone is a region inside one, never a membrane itself. At most separations, adjacent membranes stay far enough apart that Etheric templates on one side have no measurable effect on the other. Where the Interval between them narrows, the two membranes' template fields begin to interact.

Bleed is inter-universe only. There is no Interval inside a universe, so two adjacent Concordant Zones of the same universe cannot produce it however sharply their rule-sets differ — that internal edge would give drift and timebase mismatch and nothing in the Etheric channel. The distinction is theoretical rather than practical: a Concordant Zone spans the visible universe, so nothing has ever been stationed at such an edge, and every boundary zone on the Survey Corps' books is the inter-membrane kind.

Graduated terminology, mapped to existing Boundary Types:

  • Membrane Resonance — a faint, stable signature (Type II boundary states only; Type I stays Etherically undetectable): archetypal templates from the neighbouring universe are detectable but do not displace local ones. This is what Etheric-based practices such as ritual work register as low-grade interference.
  • Intermembrane Bleed — a Type III shear event: neighbouring templates intrude far enough to compete with local ones for admissibility, producing archetypal interference events with no local physical trigger.

The renaming is not cosmetic. "Etheric effects" described a symptom. "Intermembrane Bleed" names the coupling that produces it — and gives Survey Corps analysts something a chronometer discrepancy can actually be diagnosed against.

The term specifically names the Etheric-channel signature. The same membrane-proximity event has a Physical-channel counterpart too — see Membrane Shadow for what it looks like when that channel carries a coherent mass rather than diffuse strain.
