The Common Manifold

The Common Manifold is the higher-order spacelike and timelike structure lying beyond any single universe's dimensional floor. It governs cross-membrane coherence, causality buffering, and fold survivability, and every universe the record has ever reached in the Grand Ensemble is seated in it — which is what the name records, and it is a statement about the record's reach rather than about the Ensemble: the manifold is a Formwright's formtype, common to its formcluster and not beyond it, and a differently-woven formcluster — Wholecloth is the reported case — is seated otherwise. Universes that agree on nothing about their own dimensional structure still meet here.

Each coherent universe — whatever its origin — occupies its own bounded cosmic membrane within the manifold, separated from its neighbours by the Interval. A Concordant Zone is a region inside a membrane, never a membrane in its own right, and one Worldwright authors many primary membranes.

Why Survey Corps says "post-11." Our home universe's floor is eleven — three extended dimensions, seven compact, one of time — and the manifold begins where that floor ends, so the Corps has always written it as the post-11 manifold. Both terms are canonical: "post-11" is the working shorthand and remains correct in Survey Corps usage, "Common Manifold" is the formal name.

The shorthand is parochial by construction, and knowingly so. Eleven is a local fact rather than a cosmic constant; analysts seated in a universe with a different floor would count from their own number and mean this same structure. The Corps names it from where it happens to be standing — the same habit that gave the setting three names for one boundary phenomenon (see Overfold).

That parochialism has one operational edge, and it is not academic: instruments calibrated to eleven dimensions cannot resolve a boundary event whose far side has a different floor. Survey Corps grades those as a distinct hazard class from ordinary membrane proximity.
