Compact Dimensions

In Union Irish: Toisí Dlútha — close-packed dimensions

Compact dimensions are the spatial dimensions of a universe that exist at every point but are wound too tightly for anything at Material scale to move along or look down. Our home universe has seven of them, giving it a dimensional floor of eleven: three extended spatial dimensions, seven compact, and one of time.

They are ordinary space. A compact dimension is not a layer, not a plane of existence, and not a realm — nothing lives in one, nothing can be sent through one, and no instrument observes one directly. What they are is directions this universe has that a body is too large to use.

Their significance is what runs through them. Etheric rule-templates have geometric extent through a Concordant's compact dimensions, which is why Layer 3 effects can be localised, mapped, and read at all by a constraint-literate practitioner. That is a statement about where an Etheric effect becomes measurable, never about what the Etheric layer is — the Etheric remains a causal mode, and a mode is not a place.

Seven is a local fact. Nothing in Worldwright design requires 3+7+1; another primary universe in the Grand Ensemble can be built on a different split entirely, and how many compact dimensions it has helps determine which fundamental particles and forces can exist there coherently at all.

Not to be confused with: the bands of the Common Manifold, which lie above a universe's floor rather than inside it and carry effects between membranes. A Concordant's compact dimensions are where its templates reach at home; the trans-concordant constraint field is where they reach a neighbour.

Example: Elvira's chalk and thread work is done entirely in three extended dimensions, on ground she can stand on. The structure she is reading has extent through seven she cannot — which is why the work is procedural mapping rather than direct observation, and why she must test a boundary rather than simply look at one.
