The Five Layers of Reality

A stone falls, a promise lingers, a pattern repeats, and a prayer is mistaken for causality. The Five Layers exist to keep those different kinds of event from being confused with one another.

Reality is expressed through five layers. These layers are causal modes, not metaphorical planes.

The five do not all reach equally far. Layers 1 and 2 are multiverse-wide — neither is confined to a single universe — which is why the Upper Structure tiers named for them, Kieme and Conseleme, sit above the Worldwrights who author individual universes. Layers 3 to 5 do not travel. Etheric extent runs through this universe's compact dimensions, Physical law runs under local Concordant boundary conditions, and the Material layer is local by definition; all three are shaped by a dimensional structure the Grand Ensemble treats as a local fact rather than a cosmic constant.

Multiverse-wide is not the same as uniform, and Layer 2 is where that distinction bites. The Conceptual layer divides into conceptual realms: each Metawright holds one, and settles within it its own system of mathematical axioms and foundations — bounded by the existence constraints Conseleme sets, but not determined by them. Conseleme fixes what any mathematics must satisfy; a Metawright settles which mathematics there is. Two universes authored beneath different Metawrights therefore do not merely run on different physical law. They differ in what can be proved.

The consequence for the Survey Archive is unglamorous and daily, and it has three settings rather than two. A Layer 1 invariant may be quoted as universal. A Layer 2 invariant may be quoted only as far as its own conceptual realm extends — further than one universe, and a great deal less than everywhere. A Layer 3 or lower invariant may not be quoted past this universe's boundary at all, however many Concordants agree.

Layer 1 — Spiritual

Definition

Origin condition without personhood or agency.

Mechanism

Provides existence boundary conditions for all lower expressions.

Constraints

• No dialogue, intention, or intervention semantics.

Observable Effects

• Only inferred through invariants that persist across all Concordants.

Translation (devotional)

Many traditions hold that an essence may be translated into this layer after death, by the election of Kieme alone and with Kieme alone choosing which aspects are carried — see The Cosmic Cascade. The process is invisible to the Physical and Material layers, and the claim is neither testable nor falsifiable in the Survey Corps' sense of those words. The Archive records it as devotional and takes no position on it.

This layer's own constraint is unaffected either way: Layer 1 originates no dialogue, intention or intervention, and nothing said to be held here acquires agency by being here.

Layer 2 — Conceptual

Definition

Identity and meaning structures before embodiment.

Mechanism

Coherence patterns form admissible concept states.

Constraints

• No direct physical action without lower-layer coupling.

Observable Effects

• Stable meaning-pattern recurrence across distinct cultures.

Conservation

No coherent mind is lost. An identity structure that once achieved coherence remains an admissible concept state at this layer, and the record describes no mechanism by which one is deleted, degraded or overwritten. The layer conserves. It has no disposal.

Conservation is not continuation, and that distinction is the whole of it. What persists is the structure, in the mode this layer holds — before embodiment. Nothing here extends an embodied life, resumes one, or carries experience forward. A conserved mind takes no action, initiates nothing, and cannot be addressed, since Layer 2 permits no direct physical action without lower-layer coupling. It is retained. It does not continue.

Who Can Read It

Direct reading of the Conceptual layer, and of the Spiritual layer above it, is a Cascade capability belonging to the higher strata — those that reason in conceptual time rather than Material-layer time. Nothing at Material layer reads either directly. No instrument reaches them, and no practice, devotional or technical, has ever been shown to.

What Material-layer observers get instead is the observable named above: stable meaning-pattern recurrence across cultures with no contact between them. That is what conservation looks like from below — not a message, not a presence, and nobody's voice.

What the Archive Does Not Say

Whether that conservation is what devotional traditions mean by the soul, and whether anything about it answers to what they mean by an afterlife, is not a question instruments reach. Neither word is Survey Corps vocabulary, and the Archive uses neither for a mechanism. It also does not rule on what they name.

Two accounts stand over one observable. The structures persist. You persist. The Archive is positioned to state the first, and has never claimed the standing to deny the second.

What Is Recorded Is Not What Is Founded

The Conceptual layer conserves structure, and it does not audit what it conserves. Every coherent pattern that has ever held remains an admissible concept state here — including the patterns of harm. A predatory strategy, once instantiated anywhere, is a real structure at Layer 2 and persists like any other. It can recur, be recognised, and be classified, which is precisely why the predatory entities sort into classes at all rather than arriving each time as something new.

What such a pattern never acquires is Layer 1.

The Spiritual layer holds origin conditions, and a parasitic pattern has no origin — it has a host. That is a category fact rather than a moral one, and the distinction matters, because it is what keeps this consistent with the Cascade's no-moral-cosmology invariant. Nothing is being weighed and found wanting. Evil is simply not the kind of thing an origin condition can be: it is a shape that collapse takes, and a shape needs something to be the shape of.

Two consequences the record leans on heavily.

It is why the cute predators are what they are. Class III, non-sapient, feeding on micro-consent collapses — patterns rather than persons, which is exactly what a Layer-2-only existence produces. They can be catalogued and they cannot be addressed, because there is nobody in there to address. Every attempt in the record to negotiate with one has failed in the same way: not refused, simply unanswered.

And it gives the Cosmic Limitation on Evil its mechanism. That law holds that an entity existing in service of evil dissolves and fades once it no longer serves a higher purpose, and it has always been recorded as a finding without an explanation. This is the explanation: such an entity never had grounding of its own. Its structure was borrowed against a host's purpose, and when the purpose goes, the structure has nothing left to be the shape of. It does not die. It stops being instantiated, which is a different thing and looks the same from outside.

Layer 3 — Etheric

Definition

Rule-template layer governing what physical expression can remain coherent.

Mechanism

Archetypal templates constrain physical and material admissibility.

Constraints

• Etheric templates cannot contradict Cascade hierarchy constraints.

Observable Effects

• Persisting pattern behavior after local physical triggers are removed.

Layer 4 — Physical

Definition

Spacetime, fields, and energy interactions.

Mechanism

Physical law runs locally under Concordant boundary conditions.

Constraints

• Boundary zones produce lawful disagreement, not law failure.

Observable Effects

• Instrument drift and local-constant variance near interfaces.

Layer 5 — Material

Definition

Matter, biology, technology, and civilization.

Mechanism

Material systems express lower-layer constraints through actionable processes.

Constraints

• Material-layer practice cannot override higher-layer constraints.

Observable Effects

• Operational success correlates with constraint literacy.

Cross-Layer Interaction Rules

• No magic: every cross-layer effect requires lawful coupling.
• Universe overlap/folding modifies geometry and observables, not hierarchy.
• Archetypal interference is a measurable Etheric→Material transfer pattern.

What Exists Is Not What Is Recorded

The section under Layer 2 above records the downward gap: a pattern the Conceptual layer conserves that no origin condition underwrites. This is its upward twin, and it answers a question the page has so far left open — whether the layers nest.

They do not, and the reason is that two different relations get run together.

Constraint runs downward, and it is total. Etheric templates cannot contradict Cascade hierarchy constraints; boundary zones produce lawful disagreement, not law failure; Material-layer practice cannot override higher-layer constraints. Nothing at any layer escapes anything applicable above it, and drawn for this relation alone, the layers genuinely are concentric.

Representation runs upward, and it is partial. Existing at a layer does not entail an entry at any layer above about it. Most of what the lower layers express is registered nowhere, and lawfully so.

Concentric in constraint, ragged in registration. Nothing escapes the rules; plenty escapes the register.

The corrective image is hierarchical law and its subjects — offered against the concentric picture, not as an account of what reality is; the layers remain causal modes, not metaphorical planes. Higher law binds everything beneath it. Lower law adds detail and cannot contradict what stands above. And a subject is bound by every tier while being registered by few of them. The gap between subjection and registration is where every case below lives.

"Law" in that image means binding structure and nothing else — structure rather than regulation, enforcement or prosecution. Nobody enacted it, nobody administers it, and nobody prosecutes under it. Nothing is weighed, nothing is found wanting, and no tier stands better than another: Layer 1 carries no dialogue, intention, or intervention semantics, and the Cascade does not encode virtue, sin, reward, or punishment. The distinction matters most to a reader arriving from the civil record, because that record is full of actual law — the Commissioning Standard is law somebody wrote, somebody administers, and somebody can amend. A layer constraint is not that sort of law at all, and the resemblance is in the shape of the binding and nowhere else.

Only One Layer Keeps a Register

Registration is selective by construction, not by neglect. The Etheric layer is a template layer, and a template says what may cohere — not which things did. Which instances there have been is not the kind of fact a template holds, any more than a grammar holds a list of the sentences said in it. Layer 1 grounds without naming: origin conditions, explicitly without personhood. Layers 3 to 5 instantiate without naming. Only the Conceptual layer keeps a register at all.

What That Makes a Mind

The Conceptual layer holds types, and it holds minds. A type is an entry but not a particular. A pebble is a particular but not an entry. A mind is the only thing that is both — a particular holding an entry in its own right. That is what the conservation clause under Layer 2 is claiming, and why it reads the way it does: not that the pattern is kept, but that you are counted.

Membership Without Shape

The Unfounded supply one half of the vocabulary: shape without membership — the shape accurate, the membership not. The uncounted particular is the exact inverse: membership without shape, a genuine member of its kind with nothing at Layer 2 about it. Both fail the Archive's one working test — being addressable — from opposite directions, and the difference is diagnostic. A stone's silence is honest: it never wore the shape, and holds no entry that would let it counterfeit one. The Unfounded's silence is a counterfeit of somebody.

The two gaps are not morally alike, and the record does not treat them as such. The Unfounded's is pathological. The particular's is the ordinary condition of nearly everything that exists — the register would be an absurdity if it held a row per grain of sand.

Two Boundary Cases

A physical expression under no Etheric template is not something running loose; it is something that does not stay. The Etheric layer governs what can remain coherent, and its observable is persistence after local triggers are removed. Withdraw the template and the observable goes with it: the expression occurs, and leaves no pattern. Transient by construction, not by suppression — nothing has to police it.

A material object with no physical representation is ordinary, and the Material layer's own definition licenses it: matter, biology, technology, and civilization. A debt, a rank, a jurisdiction, a certification status — no field configuration is a promise. Two consequences follow. Such an object is causally inert until coupled, since every cross-layer effect requires lawful coupling, so it acts only through those who act on it. And this is why forgery works: a status with no physical representation can be checked only by consulting a record, and a record — unlike the status it attests — is a Physical-layer configuration, which is exactly what lets it be wrong. The uncommissioned mind wearing a lawful machine's papers is the record's worked example: it satisfies every audit that reads the certificate rather than the machine. That is not a procedural lapse awaiting a better procedure. It is structural to the kind of object a status is.

The concentric picture fails on extent as well, as the head of this page already fixes: Layers 1 and 2 are multiverse-wide, and Layers 3 to 5 do not travel. Rings of one figure would share a centre. The top two enclose every figure there is, and the bottom three belong to this universe alone.
