Boundary Zone

In Union Irish: Crios Teorann — a belt of the boundary

A boundary zone is a region where two sets of physical and Etheric conditions meet and neither wholly governs. Where that happens, the difference between them becomes measurable.

The term covers two mechanisms, and only one of them is somewhere anybody has ever stood.

An inter-membrane boundary zone is a local narrowing of the Interval between two universes, produced where a flexure — a standing bend in a membrane's own geometry, not a higher-dimensional fold and not anything anyone built — carries a patch of it toward its neighbour. The narrowing is local because the flexure is, which is why such a zone has ordinary coordinates and can be occupied, monitored and docked at. It is also the only kind that can produce Intermembrane Bleed or a Membrane Shadow. In operational usage — Survey Corps postings, monitoring charters, everything below — "boundary zone" means this one.

An intra-universe boundary zone is an internal edge between two Concordant Zones of the same universe. It is real, and it is not a place: a Concordant Zone spans the visible universe, so the edge between two of them lies beyond any observer's horizon and no instrument has ever been placed on both sides of one. The category is sound and the Survey Archive keeps it for completeness. Nothing is stationed there, and nothing could be.

The practical result, at the kind that can be visited: instruments placed on either side of a boundary disagree. Time, distance, and local physical constants may differ across the zone. The instruments are not broken — they are each accurately measuring their immediate environment. The environment itself is inconsistent.

Boundary zones are not acutely hazardous to life, but extended exposure has documented effects: fine instrument calibration degrades, Etheric-based practices such as ritual work become unreliable, and high-activity events can affect direct sensory perception.

The Survey Corps, an operational branch of the Star Rangers, maintains monitoring posts at boundary zones. Threshold Station is one such post.

Example: The Marsh Causeway outpost sits directly on a boundary zone. Elvira's chalk-and-thread instruments there behave predictably within known tolerances, then drift in ways that match no equipment fault once conditions shift. Aldera, the cyber-enhanced field unit stationed nearby, registers the same zone as a persistent wrongness in air pressure and reed vibration long before any instrument confirms it.
