Sí Gaoithe: The Discordant Membrane
Not every membrane keeps time. Sí Gaoithe barely keeps a shape.
The Membrane
Sí Gaoithe — Irish for "fairy wind," the old term for the sudden localized whirlwinds folklore blamed on the Good Neighbours moving house — is a second primary universe documented at Celtic Union boundary zones, unrelated to Tír Tairngire in design, lineage, or Worldwright. The two are separate discoveries that happen to share a mythic register, not two faces of one thing; Survey Corps has been explicit on this point since the second case was confirmed, precisely because the folklore alone invites the opposite conclusion.
Where Tír Tairngire's membrane cycles on a rhythm regular enough to set a calendar by, Sí Gaoithe's separation from its neighboring Concordants never settles into any Boundary Type long enough to be called stable. It fluctuates between Type I, II, and III on timescales of minutes, at more than one boundary zone across Celtic Union space, with no correlation yet found to any local astronomical event the way Tír Tairngire's correlates with the Conjunction. Survey Corps' working hypothesis ties the instability to Sí Gaoithe's own Creative Entropy Index: a universe still deep in a high-CEI regime — active emergence, wide branching, low pattern recurrence — produces a membrane whose own boundary behavior inherits that same lack of settled pattern. If Threnos-Ω is what a membrane looks like past the entropy horizon, Sí Gaoithe is offered as a candidate for the opposite end of the same framework: nowhere near it yet, and it shows.
The Tunnels
At its more extreme fluctuations, Sí Gaoithe's membrane opens the same rare, matter-crossing outcome documented at Tír Tairngire — a transient gravity tunnel — but with none of the other site's reliability. Duration, location, and recurrence are all unpredictable; no instrumented team has ever had advance warning of one forming, and none has caught one closing on a schedule the way Tír Tairngire's does. The folk term "fairy wind" describes the tunnel's only consistent tell: a brief, localized gust or dust-devil at the exact site, gone by the time anyone arrives to check it.
Who Crosses
Beings crossing from Sí Gaoithe are documented almost entirely through their aftermath rather than direct observation: a swapped nameplate, a tool left in the wrong hand's kit, a door that opens backward for exactly one day, livestock startled at nothing an instrument could locate. No confirmed feeding signature, drain, or debt has ever been logged — the disruption is the whole event, not a byproduct of one, which is the main reason Survey Corps has never filed these crossings alongside Predatory Entities. Obligers calculate; a Sí Gaoithe crossing has never been shown to want anything at all.
Classification stays open by design. Meta-Dimensional Beings reserves Class II for sapient, goal-directed behavior and Class III for non-sapient pattern-matching — and Sí Gaoithe's crossers have never cleanly sorted into either. The mischief reads as deliberate often enough that "instinct" undersells it, and it never resolves into anything organized enough that "strategy" earns its keep either. Survey Corps' current position is that a Concordant whose own causality runs this far from settled pattern recurrence may simply produce agency that doesn't map cleanly onto either category — not a gap in the classification system, but the first confirmed case the system wasn't built to sort.
Folk Practice
Union households near boundary zones with a documented history of fairy-wind incidents keep a handful of small customs — a bowl of milk left out, no sweeping after dark, "by your leave" said before certain thresholds. Survey Corps' own filed position is unambiguous: no measured correlation between any of these practices and incident rate has ever been confirmed. They are recorded here as cultural practice, not as mitigation, and the distinction is kept deliberately sharp.
Open Questions
Whether Sí Gaoithe's instability is genuinely CEI-linked or coincidental, whether its crossers are one population or several, and whether the complete absence of a feeding signature across every documented incident means there truly isn't one, or means Survey Corps simply hasn't identified what's being taken yet.
