- Dún Rí, Terrace Garden — Road to the Old River Abbey
The light in the walled terrace at Dún Rí came in low and sideways, dragging long shadows across frost-blackened grass and the last roses, which had no business still blooming this late in the year. The air tasted of iron.
Elvira, warden-heir of Dún Rí, moved along the gravel path with the measured tread of someone being watched, her gloved fingers pressing the balustrade at intervals — testing, though she already knew every loose rivet by heart. Aldera moved with her: not following, not leading, but orbiting, as though tethered by something other than loyalty.
This was the second time this year she had made the walk down to the old river abbey, and she had told no one in the household the real reason for either trip. The first had ended in a diagram that seemed to hold its shape wrong when she looked at it directly, and a promise from Brother Daire that the next visit would go further. She had spent the weeks since telling herself that further was what she wanted.
The Abbey crouched on the hillside above the Boyne, older than the castles, older than the kings who had built them and been forgotten by them in turn. She had braced herself for incense and chanting — the ordinary furniture of the Fellowship's public worship, the part visitors were allowed to see. Instead, before the gates were even open to her knock, the sound found her. Not the clang of iron on iron, not bell-metal at all. Something underneath that: a frequency that lived in the bone rather than the air, the kind of sound she felt in her back teeth before she was certain she had heard anything at all.
Aldera, carried against her coat for the walk down, went rigid — ears pinned flat, spine locked — and then, far more unnervingly, stopped moving altogether. Not asleep. Not frightened into stillness the way a smaller animal freezes before a hawk crosses the sun. Simply absent from her own body for as long as the sound lasted, the way Elvira had once heard the household sage describe a mind that had gone looking for something and had not yet found the way back.
