Scene 1
Thrum, a small animal with a smooth dark glossy hide and short stubby limbs, pressed flat against a metal plate in a narrow service void with no visible eyes or ears, occupied with the surface beneath it. Warm amber light leaks in from an open panel; cables and ducting recede into the dark.

The new place was loud in the old way.

Not the metal way. Metal talks fast and thin — Eden's walls ring with pumps and doors and the far hum of the rail, everything arriving sharp, everything letting go quickly. Thrum had lived a long time in the fast thin talk and knew every voice in it. This was the other kind. This was rock.

Rock talks slow. The wall of the small den was stone on stone on stone, and under the stone was hill, and under the hill was warm water moving in the dark, a deep patient push that never started and never stopped. The whole world hummed one long low note under everything, the way the home-burrows hummed, the way the first walls hummed, before the metal. Thrum lay flat against the wall and let the note come up through every foot and the soft of the belly, and did not move for a long time, because there was no reason anywhere to move.

The big kin was in the den too, still in the same way. The wall said so. Two hearts on one stone say each other, faintly, through it — that was an old thing from the first walls, and it had not happened since the metal. The wall carried the big kin's weight and warmth and slow breathing, and carried Thrum's back, and the stone held both without effort, the way good stone does.

Above, through the hill, came small things: feet of the four-foot runners on the paths, the house door, water in a pipe, the deep even tread of the tall two-foot who kept this hill. Her steps came down through the ground the way trustworthy steps do, whole and unhurried, each one finishing what it started.

Good walls. Good hill. Good water under it.

Thrum settled into the long low note, and waited, without waiting for anything.
