The world changed at dark.
Not the dark itself — dark is nothing, dark is only the eyes, and eyes were never the main thing. What changed came through the ground. The valley's small sounds laid themselves down one by one: the feet stopped, the doors stopped, the pipes stopped, the four-foot runners folded onto the hillside and went from walking-weight to lying-weight, the tall two-foot's tread went out along the lane and then stood still a long way off, planted, like a post. The whole valley put its sounds out the way the burrows bank their warmth. Underneath, the deep water note went on alone.
And then, on top of the silence, so lightly that at first it was only a change in the quality of the quiet: the sky leaned on the world.
It was not a striking. Nothing arrived. It was a pressing — the faintest, widest touch, everywhere at once, like the air itself putting a hand flat on the whole hill and letting the weight of something very high and very slow come down through it into the stone. It rose and thinned and rose, in long slow swells with no edges, a rhythm too big for a body but not too big for a hill, and the hill carried it, and the stone carried it, and Thrum lay against the wall and heard the sky for the first time in any life a vessik had ever had.
The four-foot runners on the hillside were lying in it too. Their weight said so — settled all the way down, the lying of animals inside a sound, not the lying of animals waiting for one.
The big kin's heart, through the stone, went quick and then very slow.
Thrum pressed flat, and listened, and the world was one wall, and the wall was good.
