- A fold-approach post on the outward frontier, the record does not name which — Shepherd's first command — and Wender's line office
The post was a stretch of fold approach that answered to nobody closer than a line office nine hours away by relay, and a Starwarden answers for it. That was the sentence. Tissadelle had read it on the day the rank came through and had read it every day since, the way she read anything she was going to be held to, and it had not got shorter.
Starwarden. The hinge was behind her. Chief Ranger had been the top of the examined ladder, the rank a board could mark, and she had made it the way the record said she had, by rotating through almost every corps the Rangers ran until there was nothing left to be certified in and only command left to climb. Nobody had told her that was what she had been doing. She had worked it out the way she worked out most things, by noticing, afterwards, the shape of what she had done.
Above Chief, nothing could be examined. The Corps had told her that in the plainest words it had, which were the policy's: on promotion to Starwarden an officer is paired with a serving senior officer who is answerable for the mentorship as a duty. And then a name.
She had not expected the name, and then she had.
Wender had been Chief Pilot at Threshold when Tissadelle was a cadet there, a rank and a section and an operational horizon above anything a cadet was for, and they had spoken, in three years, perhaps four times, all of them about a corridor. Tissadelle had been aware of her the way a cadet is aware of weather. Then Season 2 had put Tissadelle on a Survey rotation and Season 3 had put her in a review chamber, and somewhere in between she had begun to notice that Chief Pilot Wender, who had no reason to, was in the room more often than the rooms required, and said less in them than anyone, and that the saying less had a shape.
The one person senior to you who knows what the crossing costs, the officer who handed her the order had said, which was a sentence somebody had plainly said to him, and arrived at it from the far side. Wender had come to command from the top of one thing. Tissadelle had come to it because rotating through everything had left her nowhere else. Two crossings, opposite directions, the same rank; the Corps needed both and had promoted both and then handed one the other to look after.
What she was carrying, she listed, that evening, in the way she listed things she might be asked. The Sentinel. The Threshold discrepancy and what she privately made of it, which was more than the record did. Tobble, who was in no file the Corps held and never would be unless she put him there, and who had opinions about Wender that he kept, for once, to himself. The inner world.
None of it was in any file. All of it was hers. She did not yet know which of those two sentences a mentor was entitled to, and found, lying awake on a post that answered to her, that she would rather be told than guess.
