- Threshold Station, Dock Seven, and the boundary beyond it
Rook-7's arrays were not certified, which was the entire reason it had them, and at 0538 they logged an event that Threshold's certified instruments recorded as a null.
It filed the discrepancy first, because a discrepancy was the finding and everything else was interpretation, and then it filed the interpretation, flagged as such, at length, because nobody else on the station was going to.
The event had a shape. It began as a perimeter — a closed figure drawn around the Combine's platform and the aperture both, established in under a second, which was not a speed anything Rook-7 had a model for could establish a perimeter at. Inside the figure, the arrays lost resolution in a manner Rook-7 declined to call interference, because interference was a claim about a mechanism and it had none. Outside the figure, at a standoff of some fourteen kilometres, four discrete somethings held position and did not enter.
Rook-7 recorded that they did not enter for eleven minutes. It considered this the single most important entry in the log and knew that no one would read it that way.
Then the figure closed, and the Combine's platform stopped returning a signature, and so did every hull registered to the Hyperfold Yield Combine within nine hundred thousand kilometres, and the four somethings at standoff did not move at all.
The Sufficient Cause returned a signature throughout. The three Farline couriers returned signatures throughout. Every shuttle in the water returned a signature throughout.
Rook-7 examined that asymmetry for some time. Asymmetry was what its arrays were built to catch and what its logs were most often ignored about. The obvious reading was that something had looked at a boundary full of vessels and sorted them into two piles by desert, and Rook-7 rejected the obvious reading, not from delicacy but because the evidence did not support it: the figure had been drawn around a process, not around a party. Everything inside the figure had been part of holding an aperture open. Everything outside it had not. Nothing had been spared. Things had merely been not included, which was a different operation entirely, and the difference was going to be lost on every person who read this log.
It logged that too.
At 0549 the crews on Dock Seven's outer gallery, who had watched the whole of it through a viewport with no instrumentation at all, gave their statements. Nine of nine used the word dragons. Two of them wept. One asked Rook-7 whether that meant somebody had been on their side, and Rook-7, which had spent the previous eleven minutes establishing precisely why that question did not follow, said, "I don't know," because it did not, and because the true answer was long and would not have helped him.
Nothing ever corrected the impression. Rook-7 noted, in a later pass, that nothing had ever been asked to.
