The Drithle Crossing Instrumented

2827 UCSD, Spring (Eden reckoning)

In the spring of 2827 by Eden's reckoning, a crossing night by Drithane's calendar, the Survey Corps returned to Gleann na gCaorach to instrument the crossing itself rather than the valley's observance of it. A Chthonari member of the Engineering Corps on the follow-up brought Thrum, a vessik, for the crossing instrumentation. There is still no form for a vessik, on Eden or on any world since.

The survey record states a ground-coupled infrasound signature for the drithle: a hemisphere of slow ablation pressing on the atmosphere, and the atmosphere pressing on the world, very lightly, for the length of a crossing. The sky writes on the ground. The signature was confirmed by instrument and by vessik together, the one reading the air and the other the stone, which is the only way a vessik reads anything.

Whether Drithane's animals quiet on crossing nights because they feel it is entered on the survey record as an open question, not an answer. The valley keeps the custom either way.

Canon facts:

  • The drithle has a ground-coupled infrasound signature, confirmed by instrument and by vessik together; the sky writes on the ground, very lightly, for the length of a crossing.
  • Whether Drithane's animals quiet on crossing nights because they feel it is an open question on the survey record, not an answer.
