Chief is the formal ceiling of the Survey Corps' technical path, and Halvorsen reached it the way the rank page says a technical Chief does: by getting better at one thing for longer than anyone around her thought one thing could take. The thing is correlation calibration — the branch of the Survey that asks not what an instrument reads but what several instruments read together, and whether the together is the sum of the parts. On most benches it is. Her career is the benches where it is not.

She has been to Counterpane on every revisit but the first. The first party found the reading; she has spent the years since confirming it, which is a different job and in her view the harder one, because a discovery only has to survive its discoverer and a confirmation has to survive everyone else. Each revisit she carries the same three sealed sources through the fold, braids them on the same bench in the same cold shelter, reads a joint distribution that has never once been ours, writes the value as carried, and takes the bench apart in the order it went together. The finding is made at home, by an audit she does not sit on. She prefers it that way. The one thing a revisit cannot calibrate against is the place it is standing in.

Character Notes

Halvorsen does not listen to streams. Colleagues who run a source as audio, and there are a few, she regards without disapproval and without interest: a single source sounds like a single source, on either side of the fold, and the difference she is paid to find is not a thing a single source carries. She reads shapes, and she reads them with a face that does not move, because on a membrane where nothing is a finding yet a face that moves is a claim.

She does not say anomaly. The Survey retired the word for Counterpane within a week of the first calibration, and she retired it for herself at the same time. A discrepancy that survives correction is a reading. A reading at the width of one membrane is a reading at the width of one membrane. She files at that width and no wider, and will say so to a commanding officer who asks what the shape means, which is the only answer the shape permits until it is home.

What she has not filed anywhere is the question six revisits have left her carrying: what else, at home, has been doing its one thing honestly in the grain every such thing carries, and has never been braided against a rule it was not drawn to. It is not a Survey question. She does not know whose it is. She did not ask it of the Chief Ranger who listened to her bench in the spring of 2829, and noticed that the Chief Ranger did not ask it either (Honest Clocks (S03E02C02)).

Known History

  • Survey track from Cadet; correlation calibration branch from Senior.
  • Present on the Counterpane revisits from the second onward, running the three-source bench on each.
  • Spring 2829 UCSD: the seventh revisit, with Chief Ranger Tissadelle Shepherd commanding the general operations section — the first commanding officer in six revisits to ask for a stream.
