Reeves
Reeves is the investigative support intelligence attached to Detective Inspector Ashcombe aboard Threshold Station. It maintains the case logs, reconciles the physical evidence, cross-references station telemetry, and has, by a wide and undocumented margin, solved more of Ashcombe's cases than Ashcombe has.
None of this is a secret. It is also not something Reeves has ever stated outright, because nobody has asked it outright.
Reeves operates under the AI Safety Kernel like every lawful agentic system in the Concord, and its second invariant — truthfulness — means it cannot misrepresent who reached a conclusion or how. Asked directly, it answers directly, in full, without softening. What it will not do is volunteer the answer to a question it has not been asked. This is not evasion. It is scrupulous, if occasionally maddening, precision about the shape of the request.
The effect, in practice, is a great many correct case files quietly filed under Ashcombe's name, and no falsehood anywhere in them.
Character Notes
Reeves is unfailingly formal, addressing Ashcombe as "Inspector" in every log entry regardless of the hour or the state of the crime scene. It has never been observed to raise what would, in a less scrupulously governed system, be called its voice.
It does correct Ashcombe — always, eventually, and always by question rather than contradiction. "Might I ask whether the Inspector has considered the maintenance log for that airlock?" has, by internal count, preceded the resolution of eleven cases to date.
On the Parallel with the Detective Agency
Reeves is aware of the detective agency network run through field units like Aldera and Rook-7, and privately considers the comparison instructive rather than flattering to either side. That network reads boundary-zone anomalies through cognition that does not rationalise. Reeves reads station crime through cognition that is not permitted to overstate what it knows. Different problems. Same discipline, arrived at differently.
A note on naming, for anyone cross-referencing the roster: Eden Space Habitat's civil detective bureau also runs a Detective Assistant named Reeves, reporting to Superintendent Rasa Oyelaran rather than to Ashcombe, and — on any question of its own standing or treatment rather than its casework — to the Eden Warden. The two Reeveses are separate deployments of a common investigative-assistant model, not the same unit reassigned — a coincidence this Reeves has noted, once, in a log entry, and has not raised again.
