Ollune
In Union Irish: Ollune — the people's own name, kept; it renders roughly as the held
Species
Ollune is the species' own word for itself, rendering roughly as the held. They are native to Freyari — the temperate shell of habitable air wrapping Cirrane, a gas giant with no surface. The distinction matters to them: Cirrane is a Federation survey name for the whole body, while Freyari names only the inhabited band, and is also the Ollune word for everywhere. They float by holding a gas envelope above ambient temperature through continuous metabolic effort — so lift is not something an Ollune has but something an Ollune pays for, hourly, for life. Sleep is therefore communal: an unconscious Ollune sinks, and is carried by the waking members of a tethered hold.
Ollune speech runs on two channels that Ollune law never conflates. The far word is low-frequency pressure sound — fast, public, audible to everyone in the band, and gone the instant it is uttered. It binds nothing: there are no oaths, no verbal contracts, and no spoken confessions. The near word is chemical, exchanged at close range, slow, persistent, and distinct to the body that produced it. It binds everything: agreement, consent, debt and office exist only as near words.
The practical effect most often cited outside Cirrane is that an Ollune can raise an alarm at no cost to themselves, because warning and committing are separate organs rather than two uses of one. Correspondingly, lying in the far channel is unremarkable, while a false near word is the gravest offence the Ollune recognise.
Example: A shoal passing through a shear layer will fill the band with far-word hazard calls from anyone who feels the drift go wrong, and none of those callers has said anything they can later be held to. The decision to cross is a near word, marked by a named individual, and it will still be readable years afterwards.
See the Lore entry on the Ollune for full details.
