Cerebraun
Ask a Cerebraun a simple question and the answer sometimes arrives in three parts, seconds apart, none of them contradicting the others. Xenolinguists spent a decade assuming this was evasion before admitting it was just how the species thinks.
The Cerebraun are a cephalopod-descended, sapient people distinguished from every singly-brained species on record by a single structural fact: cognition, for a Cerebraun, is not one thing happening in one place.
Physical and Cognitive Characteristics
- A dominant central brain handles executive judgment, language, and long-term planning — the "voice" a Cerebraun presents to the outside world.
- Each of the species' eight primary limbs carries its own semi-autonomous ganglion, capable of independent sensory processing, reflexive decision-making, and — controversially, among xenobiologists who first documented it — a measurable degree of localized preference and mood.
- The central brain does not fully override the limb-ganglia. It negotiates with them. A Cerebraun under stress can visibly experience one limb's ganglion acting against the central brain's stated intention, a phenomenon their own physicians treat as ordinary rather than pathological.
- Skin bears chromatophore and texture-changing tissue capable of rapid, high-bandwidth display — used for identity signaling, emotional broadcast, and a formal display-language reserved for precise technical and diplomatic communication.
Complex Inner Worlds
Outside observers who describe Cerebraun psychology as "layered" are, if anything, understating it. A single Cerebraun can hold what a human psychologist would classify as several simultaneous, only partially reconciled trains of affect and intention — not as internal conflict in the human sense, but as a normal condition of having cognition distributed across nine semi-independent processing centers instead of one.
This makes Cerebraun notoriously difficult for other species to model predictively. A human diplomat can learn to read a Krenyi's directness or a fellow human's tells. Predicting a Cerebraun requires tracking which of nine centers is currently weighted heaviest in a given exchange — information no outside observer has reliable access to, and which the Cerebraun themselves do not always resolve before they act.
Communication
Cerebraun conversation operates on at least two simultaneous channels: spoken or written language carrying the central brain's stated position, and skin-display carrying real-time affective and confirmatory signal from the limb-ganglia beneath it. A trained Cerebraun listener reads both. Untrained outside observers — nearly everyone who isn't Cerebraun — reliably miss the second channel entirely, which is the single most-cited cause of cross-species misunderstanding in Hegemony diplomatic records.
The failure is rarely dramatic, which is why it persists. What an untrained observer typically takes away is a correct transcript and a wrong meeting: the words were courteous and non-committal, and the second channel — where the cost of saying them was being paid in real time — was not read at all. Filed Under Noise (S03E01C01) and Independent Verification (S03E01C02) run a Survey Corps reclassification through a Hegemony administrator across two chapters, and the material an outside reader has to work to catch is almost entirely on the channel the transcript does not carry.
Social and Political Reflection
Cerebraun governance philosophy is, by the species' own account, a direct extension of their own neurology: legitimate authority is centralized in one dominant voice, and every subordinate part — whether a limb-ganglion or a subject administration — is expected to execute that voice's decisions rather than bargain over them as an equal. The Cerebraun Hegemony is that governing philosophy applied at civilizational scale.
