The Undersong Belt
Every survey of the Undersong Belt notes the same anomaly before any biologist has said a word about who lives there: the rock rings. Not randomly — in structured, sustained harmonic bands, audible to any hull-mounted sensor within a disappointingly ordinary range, coming from asteroids with no obvious power source and, by every reasonable model, no reason to resonate at all.
The reason is the Chthonari, and the resonance is not a side effect of their engineering. It is the engineering.
A Cluster, Not a Planet
The Undersong Belt occupies the Skarn System's main asteroid population: thousands of bodies ranging from loose rubble to habitat-scale planetoids, none large enough to hold on to an atmosphere, none needed to. The Chthonari never required a planet's gravity well — their physiology evolved for negligible gravity from the start — and settled the belt the way another species might settle a river system: dozens of independent burrow-clusters strung along the belt's densest bodies, connected by transit tunnels and, less obviously to outside visitors, by a shared resonant vocabulary running straight through the intervening rock.
Excavation as Composition
A new Chthonari burrow is not excavated and then, separately, tuned. The two happen as one act. Structural members are cut to length and cross-section not only for load-bearing sufficiency but for the resonant frequency they will carry once the settlement is sealed and pressurized — meaning a Chthonari excavation crew works from something closer to a musical score than a structural blueprint, and a completed settlement is, among the Chthonari's own accomplishments, judged as much on how it sounds as on how well it holds pressure.
Older settlements accumulate resonant complexity the way other civilizations accumulate architecture: additions are tuned to harmonize with what's already there rather than simply meeting current structural need, and a multi-century burrow-cluster carries a resonant signature layered enough that trained Chthonari listeners can, by several credible accounts, identify which settlement a given recording came from without being told.
Contact and Federation Status
The Undersong Belt has been a documented Federation of Sentient Beings member territory for generations, contributing fold-scaffold engineering expertise to the Federation-Ranger material-support compact alongside Aspenar's refined ore and Prismere's corridor-condition confirmation — a three-way division of labor the compact's own administrators are, by now, fairly proud of: the ore to build the ship, the sky-reading to confirm the route, and the scaffold engineering to make the transit itself hold together.
