The last page of an exercise log, Barsik taught, should answer the question you were sent with. Bubochka had been sent with: observe how a world watches its own sky.
She wrote her answer on the shuttle, while the valley fell away below.
The world watched its sky by turning its own lights out. That was the whole method. Not better instruments, not more attention — less noise. The valley put out everything of its own that shone, once a crossing, all together, so that the only thing performing was the sky. And a place that practises putting its own light out, kindly, on a schedule, is a place where no small warm thing can ever get a foothold — because a foothold needs somebody who has forgotten how to go dark. The two findings were one finding. She suspected Barsik had known that when he chose the exercise, and had not told her, because if he had told her she would have observed that, and nothing else.
The boy from the kitchen-calendar house had come to see her off. He gave her a copy of the crossing calendar, folded small, the red hours marked in his own hand, in case Eden wanted one. She had accepted it with proper ceremony and packed it herself. Eden did not have a sky to watch. She was beginning to think that might be the trouble with Eden, filed under a heading she didn't have yet.
Muffin came aboard mid-load, the way it had come everywhere: passed along. She watched from her crate and logged the time. She heard the warden say you're carrying two at the ramp, and logged that as well, and then logged what the sentence changed about the loading, which was nothing. That was the finding that mattered, and she wrote it carefully, because it was going in the report's last line and last lines had to hold weight without wobbling:
The counter works person by person. It has never yet worked institution by institution. The warden told the truth to the whole chain at once, and every hand in the chain stayed kind.
Filed. Not volunteered. Home by end of shift.
