Niamh Ó Ceallaigh on a working fjord quayside, a practical woman in middle age with grey-streaked hair pulled back against the wind, in a waterproof deck coat, looking out across the water rather than at the viewer. Moored boats line the shore behind her and the flat water holds the cliffs upside down.

Niamh Ó Ceallaigh spends less time at the Ridgemoot table arguing than any other clan head, and more time afterward telling both sides what the other actually meant. It is not a role anyone assigned her. It is simply the one she noticed nobody else was doing.

Clan Ó Ceallaigh holds the coastal fjord country on Aethelrock's western edge and the planet's fishing fleets, the furthest of the five clan territories from both the plateau relay station and the highland mining claims that dominate most Ridgemoot business. That distance has shaped Niamh's politics: her clan's wellbeing depends less on who holds the Union seat than on stable trade lanes between all five territories, which gives her less stake in the rotation fight than her colleagues and considerably more patience for listening to it.

Known History

  • Elected head of Clan Ó Ceallaigh in 2820 UCSD by the clan's fleet-captain council, the only clan on Aethelrock whose headship is chosen rather than inherited.
  • Negotiated the current inter-clan grain-for-fish exchange rates with Cormac Dubhghlas in 2822 UCSD, still in force.
  • Declined to formally object to Rhiannon Ceridwen's 2824 UCSD first contact, the only clan head not to file one, while privately telling Rhiannon she'd been reckless.
  • Has proposed, at each Ridgemoot since, a compromise rotation that shortens every clan's term rather than restoring the old schedule outright — so far accepted by none of the other four clans.

Character Notes

Niamh's neutrality is a considered position, not an absence of opinion. She has told Rhiannon privately that the unilateral contact was a mistake in method even if she doesn't think it was wrong in substance, and has told Cormac just as directly that the old rotation he wants restored was never as fair as he remembers it — Ó Ceallaigh's own turns at the seat came late and short under that schedule, a grievance she raises rarely and never forgets.

She reads the fjord trade routes the way Fergus Aonghas reads a mining claim: as ground that has to keep working regardless of who currently holds the Union seat, which is exactly the argument she uses to keep herself at the centre of every negotiation without committing to either faction's terms. Whether her compromise rotation eventually wins is, she has said, less important to her than making sure the Ridgemoot doesn't break entirely before someone's proposal does.
