The Kept Line

Every other Levril signature in the record announces itself as disturbance. This one announces itself as an absence of it.

A boundary-integrity event has a shape on the instruments, and part of that shape is drift: a containment edge wanders as pressures change on either side of it, and the wandering is how a technician knows the edge is real and under load. At a handful of logged events the edge stopped wandering. Not stabilised, not damped — flat, held to a tolerance no engineered field has ever managed, for as long as it was needed and not one reading longer.

The duty technician who first wrote it up had no word for a thing that was not there, and filed it as the kept line. The name went into the anomaly register and stayed, which is how a Dragon with no witnesses acquired a name that nobody chose.

Not the Turquoise Dove's Opposite

It would be tidy to read this as the dark half of a pair, and it is not that. The Turquoise Dove is a Higher Levril and the Kept Line is a Dragon — a difference of permitted function, not of temperament, seniority of purpose, or anything a Material reader would recognise as character.

The Dove arrives after the emergency, when survivors are still deciding what they saw, and asks questions. The Kept Line arrives during, holds a perimeter, and leaves when the perimeter is no longer needed. Neither could do the other's work. The Dove cannot stand a containment edge; the Kept Line has never once been recorded teaching anybody anything, and there is no reason in the Cascade to expect it could.

What the pair demonstrates is the claim the lore entry makes and cannot otherwise show: that the split between subclasses is a division of labour inside one rank, not a ladder with a top and a bottom.

Known History

• Signature logged at a small number of boundary-integrity events across at least two Concordants, identified retroactively in each case from anomaly registers rather than at the time.
• Never recorded speaking, signalling, or acknowledging a Material-layer presence. No account exists of it responding to anything a person did.
• Never recorded selecting or mentoring a Champion. Constraint-literacy mentorship is a permitted Levril function; there is no evidence this one has ever performed it.
• Withdraws on completion rather than on the event ending — in two logs the flat trace ends while the incident is still in progress, which the Archive reads as the permitted task being finished rather than the emergency being over.

Whether It Was at Dock Seven

The obvious question, and the record does not answer it.

Levrils stood an enforcement perimeter at Dock Seven in 2831 UCSD, performing detection, containment and perimeter isolation — the Kept Line's exact function. Nine of nine material witnesses recorded what answered the intrusion as dragons. See What Came Off the Ship (S05E02C03).

What no one has is a signature. The instruments that would have caught a flat trace were doing other work that day, and the accounts that survive are witness accounts, which by the nature of a Levril encounter describe the witnesses. The Archive therefore records that the function matches, that the occasion matches, and that this establishes nothing — and declines to place it there.

Character Notes

Why "it". No witness has ever supplied this Levril a figure, and the record has no basis for anything else. That is not a statement about the being: a Levril has no form a time-bound observer receives directly, so the pronoun follows the evidence rather than the entity. The Turquoise Dove is she for the same reason in reverse — enough witnesses met a figure for one to stick.

It is not sinister, and the temptation to write it that way should be resisted. A silent presence that appears at disasters and leaves without explanation reads as ominous, and every element of that reading is the observer's. It performs a permitted function competently and stops. The absence of comfort is not the presence of threat, and the record has never once caught it doing anything it was not entitled to do.
