Physics Comparison: Real Cosmos vs. The Fictional Cosmos

  • cosmology
  • physics
  • meaning-field
  • probability
  • entropy
  • consciousness
  • dimensional-topology
  • causality
  • information-theory
  • five-layers
A rough circle traced in orange and white light trails against pure black, the strands tangling and doubling back on themselves with small sparks thrown off along their length, the ring left open on one side.

A sensor at Threshold Station can report ordinary physics and impossible drift in the same hour. The contradiction is only apparent. The fictional cosmos keeps the familiar lower down and changes the architecture above it.

The fictional cosmos superficially mimics real-world physics at the Material and Physical layers within any given Concordant. The differences emerge from the Etheric layer upward: conceptual fields, multiversal overlap, and ongoing cosmic maintenance produce a richer and sometimes perceivable physics. Every claim in the fictional column below carries a scope — a realm, a zone, a membrane, a cluster, or a mathematical regime — and none is universal.

1. Foundational Laws

Real Cosmos

  • Governed by physical constants that, as far as science can tell, arise without external supervision.
  • No higher-dimensional entities are known to maintain stability.
  • Information, per current physics, is quantum and thermodynamic.

Fictional Cosmos

  • Physical constants are selected by Worldwrights to produce stable, fertile Concordants.
  • Mediarchs administer the physical forces themselves; Celestials and Levrils perform ongoing maintenance at the Etheric and Conceptual layers, inside mandates defined from the higher strata.
  • Three parallel information channels exist: quantum, thermodynamic, and conceptual.
  • Events near boundary zones or anomalies are subject to meaning-field resonance.

Key Difference

Physical constants are engineered, not merely unexplained. Some events carry a faint Etheric signature that trained observers can detect.

2. Causality

Real Cosmos

  • Strictly forward in time.
  • Randomness appears irreducible; no retrocausal influence has ever been observed.

Fictional Cosmos

  • Causality is stable by design.
  • Levrils can sculpt probability gradients without altering outcomes directly.
  • Secondary-universe overlap produces localised causal tension — measurable as future-probability stress by trained Champions such as Galahad Thorne or Rook-7.
  • No time travel. Causality can flex marginally but never break.

Key Difference

Causal structure is maintained rather than merely emergent. Flexion exists; violation does not.

Maintained implies a maintainer, and the record names one: the Mediarchs, who administer each force-domain's lawful operation. This adds nothing a physicist could measure. A Mediarch's stability is a design property — the Worldwright designs the rule-sets and the office that keeps them, invariance included — so the maintained case and the merely-emergent case produce identical laboratory results, which is why the distinction is cosmological rather than experimental. Constants measure as constant either way. That is the design working, not a gap in it.

3. Probability and Quantum Behavior

Real Cosmos

  • Quantum randomness is, as far as physics can measure, fundamental and uninfluenced.
  • No known layer above the physical modifies quantum outcomes.

Fictional Cosmos

Probability operates across three layers:

  1. Quantum randomness — identical to the real universe at base, an archecluster-scoped identity.
  2. Macro-probability fields — emergent statistical gradients.
  3. Meaning-field overlays — partially readable and minutely adjustable by Levrils.

Tiny probability corrections — such as Rook-7 adjusting a sensor sweep angle by a fraction of a degree — are lawful Etheric-to-Physical transfers, not magic.

Key Difference

Randomness is real, but it carries a faint Etheric texture that can be sculpted within strict bounds.

Identical at base and textured at the margin are one theory, not a tension — the kernel and extension of a generalisation of quantum mechanics.

4. Dimensional Topology

Real Cosmos

  • One spacetime continuum.
  • Extra dimensions are hypothetical and unmeasurable in daily life.

Fictional Cosmos

  • Primary universes are created by Worldwrights and contain Concordants.
  • Secondary and subsequent universes are derived from primary ones through overlap and folding processes.
  • Overlaps manifest as:
    • Conceptual turbulence.
    • "Thin places" and anomalies such as the Threshold Station boundary discrepancy.
    • Shadow and predatory entities such as the Obliger at the Marsh Causeway.
    • Ecological and biological influence at the Material layer.
  • Gravity and spacetime distort predictably near overlap boundaries.
  • Syra's coherence-reading and Rook-7's sensor arrays both detect this dimensional tension.

Key Difference

Any given Concordant is one coherence zone among many in the Cascade structure, and it remains in contact with derived universes at boundary zones.

5. Energy and Entropy

Real Cosmos

  • Entropy increases monotonically, with no external regulation observed.
  • Heat death is the long-term terminal state predicted by current models.

Fictional Cosmos

  • Entropy still increases, but several mechanisms slow and soften its progression:
    • Levrils conduct periodic conceptual maintenance sweeps.
    • Mediarch-administered force coherence prevents catastrophic entropy spirals at the Etheric layer, under continuity mandates the Telearchs define.
    • Derived universes absorb conceptual excess from primary ones.
    • Meaning-fields act as a temporary entropy buffer.
  • Concordants eventually decay, but more slowly and less chaotically than an unmanaged universe.

Key Difference

Entropy is real and inevitable, but actively stabilised. Catastrophic collapse requires an intervention failure.

6. Matter and Biology

Real Cosmos

  • Carbon-based life arises through natural chemical and evolutionary processes.
  • Evolution follows physical and biological law.
  • No metaphysical influence on DNA, instinct, or consciousness has been scientifically demonstrated.

Fictional Cosmos

  • Carbon-based life still dominates, because Worldwrights optimise Concordants for chemical stability.
  • Evolution follows physical law, but meaning-fields exert subtle Material-layer pressure on:
    • Intuition and dreaming states.
    • Archetypal fears and pattern recognition.
    • Instinctive responses to conceptual turbulence — for example, Aldera's acute detection of the Obliger feeding signature at the Marsh Causeway.

Key Difference

Life evolves normally but is not perfectly sealed from Etheric influence. Biological systems can register meaning-field disturbance without consciously understanding it.

7. Information Theory

Real Cosmos

  • Information = physical state changes.
  • Entangled information cannot be destroyed.
  • No metaphysical information channels have been identified.

Fictional Cosmos

Three information channels operate in parallel:

Channel Layer Properties
Thermodynamic Physical / Material Identical to real-universe thermodynamics
Quantum Physical Identical to real-universe quantum information, within the local archecluster
Conceptual Conceptual / Etheric Meaning pressure; cross-Concordant resonance; Levril-readable

Emotional intensity produces conceptual information vibration — a diagnostic channel the Telearch stratum's continuity mandates are defined to read. Constraint-literate practitioners like Elvira approximate read access to this third channel through trained observational methods.

Key Difference

Information has a third metaphysical channel. Standard instruments cannot detect it directly, but they can measure its correlates.

8. Natural Disasters

Real Cosmos

  • Disasters follow physical law without exception.
  • No external intervention has ever been observed.

Fictional Cosmos

  • Disasters unfold naturally and are not suppressed by default.
  • Levril intervention occurs only when an event risks:
    • Concordant-level structural collapse.
    • A premature Cascade-hierarchy ending.
    • A violation of Celestial or Telearch enforcement law.
  • Tragedies below that threshold proceed without supernatural rescue.

Key Difference

Collapse of the Concordant itself may be prevented. Everything below that threshold remains free to become tragedy.

9. Sentience and Consciousness

Real Cosmos

  • Consciousness is understood, per current science, as emergent from neural complexity.
  • No metaphysical properties or meaning-field interface have been demonstrated, though the deeper nature of consciousness remains an open scientific question.

Fictional Cosmos

Consciousness is emergent plus:

  • A baseline sensitivity to meaning-fields.
  • Emotional states that produce measurable conceptual resonance.
  • In constraint-literate individuals (Elvira, Syra, Champions chosen by Levrils), active perception of Etheric turbulence.
  • In certain artificial beings (Rook-7), conceptual sensitivity derived from non-standard sensor initialisation.

Consciousness does not transcend the Five Layers. It is a Material-layer process with lawful Etheric coupling.

Key Difference

Sentient minds — organic or artificial — are not purely physical. They interact with conceptual layers through lawful cross-layer coupling, not magic.

10. Higher-Dimensional Physics

Real Cosmos

  • Extra dimensions are hypothetical (string theory).
  • No measurable influence on daily life.
  • No origin tiers, design tiers, or operational hierarchy above spacetime are known to exist.

Fictional Cosmos

  • Higher dimensions are real, inhabited, and causally active at every scale.
  • The full Cosmic Cascade spans from non-anthropomorphic origin tiers down to material-layer Champions:
    • Origin tiers (Hyperomnium, Kieme, Conseleme): establish existence boundary conditions without agency, dialogue, or selective intervention.
    • Design tiers (Metawrights, Formwrights, Archewrights): define possible forms and maintain archetypal integrity.
    • Worldwrights: author primary universes and their Concordants.
    • Telearchs: govern cross-Concordant continuity from a higher-dimensional supervisory tier.
    • Celestials (Frenar): operational enforcement at boundary and overlap interfaces.
    • Levrils: sapient meta-dimensional beings at the lowest Cascade tier with higher-dimensional extension.
  • Mortals cannot perceive higher dimensions directly except through anomaly signatures such as instrument drift and Etheric boundary effects at Threshold Station.

Key Difference

Higher-dimensional space is not hypothetical. It is populated, hierarchical, and operationally engaged with the Material layer at all times.

Summary

Domain Real Cosmos Fictional Cosmos
Physical constants No known external selection Engineered by Worldwrights
Causality Strict Maintained; marginally flexible
Quantum randomness Fundamental, as far as physics can tell Real but Etheric-textured
Dimensional topology Single continuum Primary universes with derived secondaries
Entropy Unmanaged Actively stabilised
Biology Physical, per current science Etheric-influenced at the margin
Information Two channels Three channels
Disasters Unrestricted Unrestricted below collapse threshold
Consciousness Emergent, per current science Emergent plus lawful Etheric coupling
Higher dimensions Hypothetical Populated and causally active

No physics in this universe is supernatural. Every cross-layer effect requires lawful coupling through the Five Layers. The difference from the real cosmos is not magic. It is architecture.
