Designed cover for Sohrel: a cephalopod-like figure with a central mantle and eight radiating limbs, each ending in its own ganglion node, in a ringed emblem on a dark starfield.

Sohrel has held the Halyx System portfolio long enough to have personally signed the original filing that closed the Sentinel's case three centuries ago, and long enough to be the one who reopened it.

As Administrator-Voice, Sohrel answers to the Prime Ganglion for every matter of trade, resource extraction, and defence posture touching the Halyx System — which in practice means final Hegemony authority over both Meridian's reef-cities and the Sentinel, the system's two most consequential holdings, one inhabited and disputed, one uninhabited and, until recently, considered settled.

Known History

  • Appointed Administrator-Voice for the Halyx System by the Prime Ganglion; has held the portfolio for approximately three centuries.
  • Signed the Sentinel's original classification as an automated hazard beacon, closing the file to further review.
  • Received Principal Tissadelle Shepherd's reclassification request in 2828 UCSD, filed through the standing Survey Corps data-exchange arrangement, and authorised independent verification the same night — the only time in three centuries of service Sohrel has reopened a filing closed that long.
  • Has declined four separate internal Hegemony requests to raise the Sentinel's reclassification with Meridian's reef-cities directly, without stating a reason for the record — the fourth arriving the same week the reclassification survived Survey Corps review (see Independent Verification).

Character Notes

Sohrel's central brain drafts the procedurally correct answer to nearly everything, and generally sends it. What outside observers who have not trained in Cerebraun skin-display miss entirely is how often that answer arrives with a second line beneath it, written to read as routine caution to anyone who cannot see the limb-ganglion dissent that actually produced it. Sohrel does not consider this deception. Sohrel considers it the ordinary business of holding a correct position and an unresolved one at the same time, without pretending the second doesn't exist.

The Hegemony's own doctrine holds that Sohrel's central brain does not answer to its limb-ganglia as equals. Sohrel's three-century record on the Sentinel file suggests the negotiation runs both ways in practice, whatever the doctrine says: an administrator capable of drafting the procedurally safe closure and then quietly authorising the opposite is not simply executing a single dominant voice's decisions.

Sohrel's silence on why Meridian has not been consulted about the Sentinel is, colleagues in the Halyx System liaison office note, the kind of silence that reads differently depending on how long the listener has known Sohrel. Newer contacts read it as evasion. Older ones read it as an administrator who has learned, over three centuries, exactly how much a subject world's reef-cities have to lose by being asked a question the Hegemony isn't yet prepared to act on the answer to.
