SOURCE DOCUMENT — RECEIVED Received by: Doctrinal Division, from the author, at the Division's request Subject: A constraint-literate account of a rigid formtype, and of the archecluster at its edge Status: Held as the source for the registry entries on Wholecloth and Selvage; graded carried (see the receiving note)

Receiving note

The Division asked the author for this account after her fold-approach recertification log carried a sentence the Division could not place: that the fold she was certifying was a privilege of the cloth. Asked where the phrase came from, she said it came from a Levril, and that she had been taught the thing the phrase names over four sittings at the boundary post in the year after the post's instability. She agreed to set the teaching down on two conditions, both kept: that she would write what was taught in the terms it was taught in and nothing of the teacher, and that the Division would mark the account at the grade it holds and no higher. The grade is carried. The Division has no instrument for any of it and expects none. What follows is hers. The note at the end is ours.

I date this by the station's calendar, which is the one the reader has. I write it in the terms I was given, because those are the terms that do work, and I mark where I was told a thing and where I derived it, because the two are not the same grade and I will not let them be read as one.

What was present

A Levril was present at the boundary post in the year after the instability, on four occasions that I can place to the day and will not. I do not describe it. What a Levril looks like is supplied by the witness, and I decline to supply one. It was present; a constraint was named; something was done about it. That is the whole of what I am willing to say of the teacher, and it is more than the teacher asked me to say.

I was recertifying the post's fold approach at the time. The teaching took my situation as its subject, which I am told is how it is always done. I was not taught a cosmology. I was taught a fold, and the cosmology was what the fold turned out to be made of.

The exercise

I was asked to read the constraints of the approach I was certifying, which I could do, since reading them was my work. I listed them: the gradient at the staging site, the aperture bound, the scaffold's tolerance, the hull's rating, the route's admissible geometry, the re-sync debt on the far side.

I was then asked to sort them. Which of these are the hull's. Which are the route's. Which belong to neither, and would hold for any hull on any route.

I sorted them. Three were the hull's, two the route's. One was neither: that two regions can be brought into adjacency at all. I had never listed it before, because it had never once failed, and a constraint that never fails is not read as a constraint. It is read as the floor.

I was asked to take that one away and say what was left.

What was left was a hull with no route. A staging site with nothing to stage. A seat that does not narrow, next to seats that do not narrow, at separations that do not change. I said so. I was told that I had just described somewhere, and that it had a name in the survey registry, and that the name was Wholecloth.

I mark this as the hinge of the teaching, and I mark what kind of thing it was: I was not shown anything. I was made to derive a place from the absence of one constraint, and then told that the derivation was also a description. Everything below follows from that one removal. Nothing below was given to me separately.

The cloth, as derived

I give these in the order they follow, because the order is the teaching. Each was put to me as a question and I answered it, and the answer was confirmed or corrected. I mark the corrections.

The template has no fold in it. The adjacency I had taken for a floor is a fact about the manifold, and the manifold is a template a Formwright instantiates. A template may be instantiated without it. One has been. This I was told, not derived: that it has been. The rest I derived.

So nothing folds, anywhere in it. Not into it, not out of it, not within it. I asked whether a better hull would change that and was corrected before I had finished the question: the absence is not a limit a hull meets. It is the cloth. A corridor chart does not fail to open in another archecluster; it fails to refer. This is the same failure one tier up.

So no universe in it has ever derived another. Derivation runs by overlap or by folding, and I was asked which of those a rigid weave with pinned seats permits. Neither. I said so the first generation is the last. This was confirmed with a qualification I give under its own heading below.

So nothing in it has a neighbour. I listed what a narrowed Interval carries in our cluster — resonance, bleed, the shadows on a boundary wall, the gravity tunnels, the weather a close membrane puts into a sleeper's night — and was asked which of them survives seats that never approach. None. I said that if anyone dreams there they dream only of home, and was not corrected, and I mark that I was not corrected rather than that I was confirmed. It is my sentence, not the teacher's.

Its arithmetic is ours. I asked what, if anything, we share with it, since we share no arena. I was told: the mathematical regime. Our proofs hold there. Nothing else of ours does. I mark this as told. I could not have derived it, and I checked whether I could.

The edge

The qualification. I had said the first generation is the last, and was told that this holds for the cloth and not for its edge.

A woven cloth has a selvage — a self-finished border the weave binds off so that it cannot unravel. Wholecloth has one. Along it, the template reserves seats: pinned like every seat in the cloth, at separations that never narrow, but open. And the archecluster seated against that edge keeps the one channel that is not transit. Minds of sufficient depth compress to seeds; a seed is transferred into a reserved seat; a universe begins there, and remains under its parent's continuity until it stabilises its own authority. None of that folds anything, and none of it was ever on the far side of an Interval, which is why it survives where everything else is closed.

I asked, in the material terms, what crosses. I was told: structure. Novelty-bearing structure, and nothing else. Not a person, not a message, not a traveller. I said so it is not an exit and was confirmed.

I asked the one question about habitation I was prepared to ask, which was whether the channel was running. I was told that it is. I asked how that was known and was told that it was known the way I was now knowing it. I did not ask further. Seeding fires only where minds are deep enough to seed, and so a channel reported as running is a report of deep minds at the edge of a cloth that will never see a neighbour, and that is as far as the material terms go. What a people becomes with a complete physics and no thin place in it is not a question I can do anything with, so I leave it where it is.

What I asked, and what was declined

Three things, in the order I asked them.

Where. I was told the question is not well-formed between manifolds, and that I already knew this from my own work: there is no separation to state, so there is no where to give. I accepted this. It is the same answer the registry gives for separations across formclusters and I had not, until then, applied it to a place.

Whether the teacher had seen it. I was told that no tier I could speak to has. I mark this exactly. It does not say that no tier has. It says that the ones in Material time, which are the ones that can teach, have not, and that what reaches me reached the teacher the same way it reached me — by being given, from above, as a constraint and not as a sight. I take this to be the channel this account is, and I take it to run as far up as it runs, and I do not know how far that is.

Why. Why a Formwright would weave a cloth that cannot fold and cannot touch itself. This was declined, and I give the words of the declining because they are the only words of the teacher's I will quote: insufficient basis for any finding. I recognised the phrase. It is the registry's. I do not know which of them had it first.

What this does

The Krenyi test for a fact is not whether it is true but whether it still does work, and I would not have written this down if it did not.

It does work. I sign fold certifications. I now know what I am signing: not a floor, but a privilege of the cloth I am in, held because my Formwright's template includes it, and absent elsewhere by construction and not by distance. A constraint that never fails is still a constraint, and I had been reading it as a floor for the whole of a career spent reading constraints. I read it correctly now. That is the entire use I have for a sealed cloth I cannot point at, and it is enough to have been worth four sittings.

Of the teacher I have said what I will say. Of the cloth I have said what I was given and marked what I was not. The edge is still growing. Nothing else there moves.

Doctrinal Division, receiving note continued: the Division holds this account at the genus the Verification Desk calls carried — a holding that rests on the filer's stated confidence, with the band written where a reader can see it, and the only genus more reading cannot improve. No instrument reaches a separation across formclusters, so nothing here was surveyed and nothing here will be; the Division has not promoted a report to a survey and will not. The registry's entries on Wholecloth and Selvage were drawn from this account tested against the Cascade's own structure as the record already held it — a rigid formtype is a lawful instantiation of the scope ladder's formcluster tier, and the seeding law the edge retains is the one the record files for this cluster — and every sentence of those entries that is not the author's derivation is marked in them as report. The teacher is not identified. Field-signature analysis at the post for the year in question returns a Levril presence at low salience on dates the author declines to give, and places no subclass; the author's selection as Champion is filed by signature, as every selection is, and from inside time a Champion's record and an avatar's are indistinguishable. What the author derived, the Division could follow and did; what she was told, she marked, and the Division has not unmarked it. One line is the Division's own: the author's no tier I could speak to has is the exact shape of the record's position on the design tiers, which are inferred and never seen, and the Division notes with some interest that she arrived at it by asking a question the Division had not thought to ask.
