Higher-Dimensional Folding

Higher-Dimensional Folding (pronounced: HYE-er di-MEN-shun-ul FOHL-ding) is one of the two canonical faster-than-light channels in the Grand Ensemble Multiverse.

The mechanism: the channel temporarily brings distant regions into fold adjacency, transfers matter through stable aperture conditions, then collapses the fold. Transit is geometrically lawful — it compresses topological distance without violating causality or bypassing hierarchy constraints. It is also slow in the way flying is slow: the crossing is a genuine shortcut, but staging the fold and certifying hull and route routinely take longer than the brief drift through it. Folding is an independent mechanism from the quantum space harmonic wave, the medium-range channel — the two share neither physics nor route map, and neither is a fallback for the other.

Fold geometry is a property of the Common Manifold — the local Formwright's formtype — so the channel is specific to, and defined within, the local formcluster: any two regions seated in the manifold can lawfully be brought into fold adjacency, and across a formcluster boundary there is no shared arena and no measured separation to fold. "Any two regions" includes regions of two membranes: a certified route can fold a patch of one universe into adjacency with a patch of its neighbour — how Deadwater is surveyed at all — and no standing Interval is crossed in doing it, the separation being compressed to adjacency and released rather than traversed. The harmonic wave is scoped one tier lower, to the local archecluster — the deepest form of the independence rule above.

Folding cannot be used for retrocausal editing. It permits distance traversal, not timeline revision.

Example: A fold transit briefly draws two distant regions into adjacency, opens a stable aperture just long enough for a vessel to cross, and then releases — leaving no shortcut behind and no trace that the two regions were ever brought close. The vessel arrives; the space itself does not remain folded.
