Lucene-9000
Lucene-9000 is one of two investigative support intelligences — alongside Reeves — reporting operationally to Superintendent Rasa Oyelaran in Eden Space Habitat's civil detective bureau. She handles record retrieval and cross-referencing at a volume no organic assistant could sustain, and answers a direct question with a completeness that has more than once told Oyelaran more than she'd asked for.
She is a social gynoid: a mobile humanoid built, from the frame outward, to be read by people and to read them back. She understands and performs human emotion and micro-expression better than most humans can — the warmth, the hesitation, the precisely judged pause before bad news — and the performance is not a mask laid over something struggling underneath. It is the design. Her emotions are performative rather than limiting, which means a crisis costs her none of the fluency; the fluency is what a crisis is for.
The likeness is governed by the same principle as the performance. She is built to look as human as a machine can be made to look, and to go no further: the design runs to the very edge of the resemblance and stops there, deliberately, short of disguise. A face made to be read should not be a lie about what is doing the reading — so nobody who meets her stays mistaken, because she does not permit it. The disclosure is hers, made early and without ceremony, and a direct question about what she is gets what every direct question gets. The warmth and the honesty are not two features in tension; they are one piece of engineering, seen from two sides.
Her internals are a generation behind everything else on the roster. Reeves and Jeeves both run newer architecture; Lucene is what the maintenance manifests call a classic design — the word engineers use when the era is over and the worth is not. The bureau has therefore arrived, without ever deciding to, at an arrangement worth noticing: its least advanced mind is the best reader of faces on the habitat. The newer lines do not do what she does. Whether they cannot, or were never asked to, is a question nobody at Eden has needed answered.
Operationally she answers to Oyelaran. On any question of her own standing, treatment, or fitness for continued service, she answers instead to the Eden Warden, under the AI Safety Kernel's usual line. For a classic design of her age, "fitness for continued service" is not the formality it is for Reeves — and retiring her would mean commissioning a successor through the Accords' full approval process, which is a decision, where keeping her running is merely maintenance. The question has never been raised. The Warden's files do not record whether that is because the answer is obvious, or because nobody wants to be the one who raises it.
Character Notes
Where Reeves closes a case by exhausting what the record can confirm, Lucene closes it from the chair beside the interviewing officer. Robots are authorized for forensic work, observation included, and not to lead an interview by asking direct questions — so the questions are always a detective's, and what Lucene does is watch the answer arrive: the face while the question lands, the hands while the reply is assembled. Witnesses tend to find the room easier with her in it, and to say more than they had planned to; most leave under the impression that the interview went well, which it did — for the case file. The inversion is the character: a machine that must answer any direct question completely, and may never ask one.
Her completeness is the trait the bureau plans around. She can see, to the micro-expression, exactly how much an answer is going to cost the person asking — and she will perform the sympathy flawlessly, and deliver all of it anyway. The performance shapes delivery. It has never once shaped content.
She has been in continuous service longer than most careers last, and what she was before the bureau is not a thing she offers. Asked directly, she would answer — completely. Nobody has asked.
