Formtype

In Union Irish: Foirmchló — a form-mould

A formtype is one of the lawful templates a Formwright instantiates: a structure built out of its Metawright's mathematics, settling what forms are available to be built out of at all. The universes descending from one Formwright's formtypes constitute its formcluster.

A formtype is not an archetype, and the two are confused constantly, both being templates and neither being a thing. An archecluster's archetypes are a vocabulary; formtypes are the grammar that permits it. Archewrights assemble archetypes and possibility space from whatever the formtypes admit — which is why two Archewrights working one formcluster can produce archetype sets with nothing recognisable in common, and why neither could have assembled the other's under a different Formwright's templates.

Nor is it a physical law. A universe's physics envelope, Etheric coupling and interaction regime are the Worldwright's work, three tiers below. A formtype does not say what happens, or even what may happen. It settles what shape a thing that happens is permitted to have.

The largest formtype is the Common Manifold — the arena every membrane in the cluster is seated in. The three tiers are visible in that one object: Conseleme fixes that seating must obtain, a Metawright supplies mathematics a manifold could be expressed in, and the Formwright instantiates the manifold satisfying the first in the terms of the second. This is why a formcluster is a common seating as well as a common origin, and why two universes in different formclusters have no measured separation at all — no shared arena exists to measure it across.

Two formtypes the record names outright, and one thing that is neither. Biological life is a formtype — that self-maintaining, self-replicating, energy-processing structure is a permitted shape at all — which is why life is neither coincidence nor rarity, and why it appears wherever conditions allow rather than where something carried it. Abstract sapience is a formtype too: the bare permission that mind is a possible kind of thing, independent of what it is made of. Not any particular mind and not minds of any character — those are archetype work, assembled from what this grammar admits, which is why sapience recurs across unrelated civilisations while nothing anywhere specifies a shape for the thing carrying it.

DNA is neither, and the contrast is the clearest teaching case the term has. It is not grammar and not vocabulary; it has no formtype, no archetype, and no template at any tier. It is one solution found once on one world out of what that world had to hand, sitting below even the Worldwright's physics envelope as pure local contingency — which is why no other biosphere in the record uses it, and why none was ever going to. The rule the whole distinction produces: life and mind are specified; their implementations are not. See Cross-Biosphere Taxonomy.

The Archive uses the word sparingly and says why. Nothing at Material scale has ever observed a formtype, and nothing ever will: an instrument is a thing built inside the grammar and cannot be turned on it. What the record holds is the inference — that archetype sets recur across universes with no contact and no common Archewright, in ways a shared vocabulary does not explain and a shared grammar does. Survey Corps files this under structure rather than under observation, and its own manual notes that a term one can neither measure nor do without is exactly the term to keep an eye on.

Example: A comparative analyst maps two archecluster's archetype sets against each other and finds no correspondence at all — not a rough one, not a partial one. They share a formcluster nonetheless, and the Archive's finding is the unglamorous one: the sets are unrelated in content and identical in what they were permitted to be. Nothing in either could have been assembled under another Formwright's templates. That is the whole of the relationship, and the only part of it any instrument reached.
