In Union Irish: Ionchollú — an incarnation, literally an in-fleshing

An Avatar is the one crossing between the Cascade's temporal registers: an incarnation of a stratum above the Celestials — whether from the middle strata's conceptual time or from the eternal strata above the Worldwrights — as a person operating at Celestial level or below: immanent, Material-time-bound, encounterable.

The crossing is bounded by what an avatar is not. It does not carry the full authority, power, or knowledge of its source: it is like its source without being the same person as its source. And because the avatar is a separate immanent person, the source itself never enters Material time — incarnating an avatar breaches neither the prohibition on direct dialogue with time-bound entities nor the prohibition on selective intervention. The higher stratum remains in its own register. A limited person exists, whose nature derives from it.

On the two words. Avatar is the record's term for the mechanism at any stratum. Incarnation is the church-space tradition's, and the tradition keeps it for one case: the avatar of Kieme, the Eternal Son on its own reading, whose archetype is the Arilon-figure. So every incarnation is an avatar, and not every avatar is an incarnation — a Telearch's avatar walking a forming universe is the first and not the second. The record uses the tradition's word only where the tradition would.

For the middle strata, avatars are the working instrument of their hardest duties, not a theoretical case. Doctrine's clearest example: a parent universe's Telearchs exercising protouniverse jurisdiction from inside — an avatar walking the still-forming universe, ministering to its newly formed Harmonarchs until a Universal Authority stabilizes. What a nascent mind makes of such a visitor depends on the devotional inheritance it carries, and no known avatar has ever corrected the impression.

Key constraints:

  • Operates at Celestial level or below, inside time and inside Concordant law.
  • Limited knowledge and limited power, regardless of how high the source stratum stands.
  • Not the same person as its source; the source's constraints and invariants remain unbroken.
  • From inside time, an avatar's record is indistinguishable from that of a Levril-selected Champion — which makes "was this figure a Champion or an avatar?" undecidable from the record alone.

Example: In theory, even Kieme could have incarnated as an Arilon-figure. That avatar would have walked one world with limited knowledge and power, been like Kieme without being Kieme — and the Fellowship of Light's comparative file could never have told the difference. The file regards that undecidability as one more reason it declines to issue verdicts.
