Photographic Beings

In Union Irish: Neacha Grianghrafacha — sun-drawn beings; a grianghraf, a photograph, is literally a sun-picture

A Photographic Being is the bright case of the Membrane Shadow: the same geometric strain between two membranes at Type III proximity, patterned by a coherent mass on the far side of a narrowed Interval, seen where the strain's geometry converges rather than diverges. A Shadow is where the bent light goes away from the observer and leaves a silhouette; a Photographic Being is where the bent light is brought together, and the far side's outline stands in the air as a figure made of gathered daylight. The Survey Corps files the class as a membrane caustic, which is the optical term for exactly this — light concentrated by a lens rather than blocked by it — and the name that carries is the one the Kingdom of the Five Islands gave them first.

The rules are the Shadow's rules, and they are worth restating because the brightness invites the wrong reading. The light is this side's. Nothing crosses the Interval: not the being, not its light, not anything. What is seen is ambient light — the sky's spectrum, on every photometer that has looked — gathered over a body's outline by strain whose strength is the boundary's and whose shape is the neighbour's. So a Photographic Being is brightest at noon, fades with the day, and cannot be seen in the dark at all; it casts no light of its own and no shadow; and it gathers light over a figure, never to a point, so it is bright enough to be read as a person in daylight and never bright enough to burn. A hand passed through it takes some of the light it is made of, and the figure dims where the hand is, and nothing else happens. It is silent. It registers on nothing built to read mass, heat or motion on this side; a cross-membrane gravimeter registers the strain. Where the same far-side mass patterns both geometries at once, the record has the image ringed by its own dimming, which is what a lens does.

It moves as the neighbour moves. A figure that walks the same way each time is a neighbour with a habit, not a recording; a figure that seems to look at an observer is the Shadow entry's open question — deliberate shaping or coincidence — unsettled here as there. If it resembles someone the observer knows, that is coincidence or convergent design, never a double, since the two membranes share no history to have diverged from.

The Kingdom's word. The delegation rendered it photographic because no register the Corps keeps had a word the court would recognise for a likeness drawn in light by nothing, and filed the rendering at the band such choices get. The court's chronicle of descent begins with their names, and the court reads them as the Kingdom's people who came first; the Tideward Sisterhood's Long Accounting names them in its charter-era hand, and the two lists disagree. The delegation's own recordings were made under the court's conditions, at a place the court chose, and the Archive has not been asked to say where. The record's position is stated above and is not the court's. What a Kingdom source, a devotional source or a Ranger on the night makes of a figure of gathered light is theirs to make, and a chapter may carry it as an experience; the record carries the caustic.

Told apart from everything it is not on the Shadow's own test: an optical signature with no thermal or mass signature is a boundary phenomenon, not a Class III incursive. Its complement on the Etheric channel of the same proximity is the Luminescent Ethereal Being — a presence with its own light where something crossed — and the instruments tell the two apart without a witness. Converging geometry is the narrower condition, so images are rarer than Shadows; the record's estimate is one documented image to some tens of Shadows, and it expects the ratio to move as more boundary zones are watched in daylight.
