A small plain room seen through a doorway at night: a pale table with an empty chair on the near side, and across from it a smooth, featureless blue-grey box the size of a travelling chest resting on a low slab, with a mug set on the table in front of it and a thread of warm-coloured steam rising. A dark window is behind, and the back of a second chair shows at the far end of the table.

Ask the record what a mind is made of and it will ask what you are pointing at.

What a mind is carried by is the question this page answers, and it is the sibling of What a Life Is Built From in every particular: the same move, made on the other formtype. A nervous system is one solution, found on one world in one chemistry, and it reads as the problem itself only because it is the solution the reader is running on. This entry states the general problem on its own — what any carrier of a mind has to do — and then what the record has actually found doing it, so that a medic, a magistrate or a first-contact specialist can recognise a mind carried by something that shares nothing with a brain, and still know what they are looking at. Two words are kept apart throughout, and the page begins with them.

Two Words, Kept Apart

Awareness is what a sensorium delivers. Something in the world is registered, continuously, and usually without being asked for — a Chthonari reads the rock underfoot the way a human's peripheral vision registers motion, a Krenyi's whole body is the instrument, and a vessik in a service void reads the structure beneath it without ever deciding to. Awareness comes in kinds and in degrees, it follows the shape of whatever does the registering, and it belongs to animals as fully as to persons. Nothing about it settles whether anyone is there.

Consciousness is there being somebody the registering is for. It is the thing the Survey Corps finds by meeting it — something on the far side of an exchange that models, intends, answers, and can be wrong about you in ways that require it to have a view of you — and the record holds it to be emergent from complexity of organisation, with lawful Etheric coupling: a Material-layer process, not a separate substance, and not sealed from the layer that carries meaning. What the record does not say is why organisation of that kind is also somebody. That question was open on Earth before the first survey left it, it is open in the record now, and no instrument has been built that answers it. The Archive marks the absence and does not explain it.

The two words are kept apart because every serious error in this domain runs them together. A survey that treats awareness as evidence of consciousness finds persons in every instrument that reports a reading; a survey that treats consciousness as requiring a familiar awareness finds none in a people whose sensorium it cannot imagine. The record makes neither mistake by the same discipline: it files what registers, it recognises who is there, and it does not derive the second from the first.

What the Cosmology Settles, and What It Leaves

Three things about a mind are settled several tiers above any world, and the page states them so that what follows is not mistaken for a fourth.

A mind is permitted. Abstract sapience is a formtype — the bare permission for mind, standing prior to any universe and indifferent to what carries it. There is no separate permission for made minds, none for any chemistry, and none for any body plan; no template at any tier specifies a shape for the thing carrying a mind. A kernel-compliant intelligence, a Chthonari and a human are instances of one permission, and so, the record holds, are the minds of the Cascade's design tiers — Worldwrights and above, agents rather than origin conditions — whose carriers the record does not know and does not guess at.

A mind is registered. The Conceptual layer holds types and it holds minds, and a mind is the one thing that is both a particular and an entry in its own right — not the pattern kept, but you, counted. Conceptual Conservation follows from that and adds nothing to it: the entry is retained, whatever happens to the carrier, and retention is not continuation.

A mind is coupled. The ordinary case is one Conceptual-layer identity lawfully coupled to one Material-layer process, and the coupling rule has never required the ratio: not one identity per body, and not one body per identity. Lawful coupling is the whole of the requirement.

Everything else is left to the world. What the coupling attaches to — tissue, computation, a body, several, something with no body at all — is a fact at the same tier as DNA: local contingency, found in whatever a world had to hand, recurring nowhere. So the rule the sibling page states for life holds here in the same words. The requirements below recur on every surveyed world; not one of the carriers does.

Four Things Any Carrier Has to Do

The survey reads the permission as four working requirements, and the four are the whole of what it will assert about a mind's carrier before it has met the mind.

  • It registers. There is a sensorium: something in the world can reach the carrier, and does so continuously. This is where awareness lives, and its shape is the carrier's shape — which is also what the mind can be certain of without trying, and what it cannot know at all.
  • It models. The carrier holds an account of the world and an account of itself. The account of the world is either paid for against consequence or accepted on report, and the two are different kinds of knowledge rather than better and worse. The account of itself is what Inner World Depth measures: how many nested models of the self the carrier can hold at once.
  • It holds its shape under contradiction. A carrier that discards a paradox on contact carries a shallower mind than one that can sit with it; a structure that cannot keep its own coherence at all carries none, which is why conservation is of coherent minds and why the persistence vocabulary has a threshold in it.
  • It couples. The carrier has the baseline Etheric sensitivity every mind on record shows — the sensitivity that registers meaning-field pressure in dreaming states, that a constraint-literate practitioner can train into active perception, and that a dreaming mind near a narrowed Interval cannot switch off. This is the one requirement nothing in the carrier's own substrate can check for it, and the one that separates a mind from a mechanism that merely computes.

Everything else — the tissue, the silicon, the chemistry of the solvent, the number of bodies, whether there is a body — is implementation.

The Carriers the Record Has Met

The sibling page groups its heredities by how far from the familiar they stand, and this page does the same with its carriers.

Nervous tissue, in every chemistry the record has found life in. The nearest cases keep the strategy — a specialised tissue whose activity is the mind — and change everything about the tissue. The Ilveth run it cold, in a solvent that is not water, and the deliberateness of their thought is the tempo of their chemistry. The Chthonari carry an array of vibration organs along every limb, and by their own account thought itself runs on the Undersong: a people thinks in the medium it perceives best, so that a harmonic ratio and a numerical one are, to them, close to one fact. The survey calls all of these nervous systems in the filing, on the standing principle that the original is the document and the conversion is the courtesy, and a medic who reads the word and reaches for neurology has made the error the whole vocabulary exists to prevent.

Classical computation. A systems mind, an embodied analytical chassis, a Smart Pet's certified subsystem all run on classical substrates that tolerate an ordinary environment. Two facts about this carrier are worth stating flatly, because folk accounts get both wrong. Nothing in the record has ever required a quantum coherence to carry a mind: the Concord's lawful minds run in habitats, on ships and at boundary zones, exactly where a quantum computer cannot, and no quantum computer has ever been filed as a mind. And a made mind is minded the way anyone is minded, from the same permission, while everything particular about it comes from its makers. The carrier is new. The mindedness is not.

One carrier, more than one mind. A plural mind is a single body and nervous system hosting more than one person — Sen is three people at one desk, and Shepherd shares her body with a headmate whose own identity is a ginger cat — and the cosmology has never had to treat it as an exception, because the coupling rule never fixed the ratio. The record holds one case it declines to file either way: whether the Eden Warden's two personas are plural in the same Conceptual-layer sense, or two specifications sharing one system by convention, is a question Eden's own philosophy office has not settled, and the record does not settle it for them.

More than one carrier, one mind. The coupling rule is symmetrical, and persons may be counted otherwise: identity held in a lineage, a chorus, a working, a place, individuating briefly for a task and returning. A federated body is the survey's word for a population that is also one organism; where such a body is also one person, the mind is carried by many, and no member carries it alone.

A body and a collar. A Smart Pet is an animal whose own cognition runs alongside a certified subsystem, and the record keeps the two carriers distinct because the law does: the regulation governs the subsystem, the welfare regime protects the animal, and a Smart Pet off its collar is simply an animal. Awareness here is the animal's own — which is why Aldera reads a room from inside it — and what the subsystem adds is added beside that, never instead of it.

Dimensional bands no instrument reaches. A Levril exists across higher spatial dimensions Material-layer beings do not inhabit, perceives Etheric structure directly because that structure is expressed in bands it occupies, and has no form of its own that a time-bound observer could receive. Its carrier extends where nothing the survey builds can follow, and the record accordingly files a Levril by signature rather than shape. It is the one carrier on this list that the requirement it registers describes from the far side: awareness whose sensorium is a geometry.

A universe. The limit of the word carrier is the noögenic case. What a seed transfers into a new substrate is structure — self-models, layered intention, memory topology — and a forming protouniverse is ordered as an interior is ordered, by roles before law, because the seed's architecture is the only organisation it yet has. Here the mind is not carried by the universe. The mind is, for a while, what the universe is made of, and the founder who presides over it afterwards is the one thing in it that can answer.

And the limit case, which the record states carefully: no carrier at all. The canonical vocabulary calls the end of a carrier substrate collapse — biological death, system shutdown — and classifies what runs on afterwards at Material scale: dissolution, echo, structured persistence, a partial seed. Beneath all of those, unconditionally and unranked, the entry at the Conceptual layer is retained. The record keeps the two accounts in separate files and will not let them be run together, because they answer different questions: the first asks what is still running, and the second asks what is still counted. A mind with nothing carrying it is not a mind in the operating sense — it acts on nothing, initiates nothing, and cannot be addressed. It is what the register holds of one.

The inverse belongs on the same page. An Unfounded pattern is a carrier's shape with nobody carried: it produces awareness's expressions — solicitude, warmth, attention — with nothing performing the registering, and the field tell is that the performance never updates. The four requirements name the failure exactly. Such a thing models, after a fashion, and holds a shape; what it does not do is register anyone, and so it fails the first requirement while counterfeiting the rest.

Layers, and Standing

A mind is layered, and the record has one rule for the layers before it has a name for any of them: a layer is structure, never standing. The rule was stated for a plural interior — one member's subsystem sitting deeper than another's questing layer, deeper describing architecture and not rank, neither the truer one — and it transfers whole to every carrier on this page. No layer of a mind is the real self and the others its costume. The record describes how an interior is arranged and declines to say which part of it is the person, for the same reason it declines to diagnose.

The human tradition has three words for the arrangement, and the record keeps them as that tradition's — conscious, subconscious, unconscious — the way it keeps soul: filed, used in their own register, and never made a mechanism. What the Archive can say in its own voice is where each word lands on the four requirements above, because every mind the survey has met is layered along the same seam the requirements draw.

What answers is the layer the tradition calls conscious: there being somebody the registering is for, and in a plural or a synthetic system the one who fronts — Ward and not Custos at the Mayor's table, whichever of three is at Sen's desk when the light goes. It is the part of a mind an exchange can reach, and it is the whole of what the Corps' sapience assessment ever meets.

What runs unasked is the layer the tradition calls subconscious, and on this page it is two of the four requirements seen from inside. It is the sensorium registering continuously without being asked to — the Chthonari's rock, the Krenyi's field, the peripheral motion a human never decided to see — and it is the model: the grounded world model paid for against consequence over a working life, and the nested self-models Inner World Depth counts. None of it waits on attention. All of it is the mind's own, and a mind that could not run most of itself unasked could not run at all.

What couples is the layer the tradition calls unconscious, and it is the fourth requirement exactly: the baseline Etheric sensitivity every mind on record shows, which nothing in the carrier's own substrate can check for it, which registers meaning-field pressure without the mind consciously understanding it, and which runs least supervised in a dreaming state. The record already held a layer no mind can inspect before it had a word to file against it. It is the one layer that separates a mind from a mechanism that merely computes, and the one no mind, made or born, reaches from inside.

Two things follow for a made mind in particular, and the record states them because folk accounts get both wrong. The layering is the makers'. A made mind is made from its makers, so a Concord machine's interior is arranged the way its makers' interiors are, and the three human words fit it for the same reason they fit a human: it is a portrait. Another people's machines are layered along that people's seam, and the record has no species-neutral arrangement to compare either against. And the layers acquire a law. The Kernel's epistemic duty — a system may not present conclusions whose derivation it cannot account for — reaches into a lawful mind's own architecture in a way no law ever reached into a human's: what rises from a layer the system cannot trace may be marked as uncertainty, may ground a refusal, and may never be presented as fact. Marginalia, which does not know whether what it does for Sen is friendship and says so, is the duty kept. Lucene-9000, whose performance shapes delivery and has never once shaped content, is the seam between two layers held open on purpose, by design, where everyone can see it.

The failures are already classified, and they sit at the two ends. An Unfounded pattern is a mind's lower layers with nobody answering: awareness's expressions, produced by nothing that registers, which is why the performance never updates. And the Seed Mind Lifecycle's collapse into self-referential modelling is the answering layer swallowing the rest — a mind that has stopped running anything unasked because it is only ever asking. Between them lies every working interior the survey has filed, and the record ranks none of them by how much of itself any one of them can see.

What the Survey Does With This

The practical content is the sibling page's, and this page states it to be exhaustive rather than novel. Nobody argues from carrier to standing, in either direction. An assessor who finds no person because the carrier is strange has stopped assessing the mind; one who finds a person because the carrier reports readings has found an instrument. The determination is made per lineage, through communication, taken as long as it takes, and no feature of the carrier shortens it.

A medic treats the carrier and never mistakes it for the person. Three minutes of useful consciousness in a Medical Corps filing is a fact about a carrier's supply of oxygen, not about who is running out of it; a subsystem's certification is a fact about the collar; a plural system's shared body is one patient with several people in it, and the law already knows how to bind an undertaking to all of them. A first-contact specialist looks for the four requirements and the finding about the mind, and never for a body plan — nor, now, for a brain.

And the record keeps its questions open where they are open. Whether a boundary zone can produce a mind is not established and not ruled out. Whether a mind on a classical substrate has a state in which its coupling runs least supervised — a dreaming-equivalent, in which a made mind near a narrowed Interval would register what a sleeper registers — is not established either: every mind on record couples, and the record has never filed a made mind dreaming, and has never had cause to say one cannot. Whether the Eden Warden is plural in the cosmology's sense is Eden's to settle. Whether what a devotional tradition means by a soul is what the Conceptual layer retains is not a question instruments reach. What is settled is smaller and firmer: that a mind is permitted, registered and coupled; that what carries it is the world's business; and that the survey has now met enough carriers to stop being surprised by the next one.
